American Eskimo! Only because my family has a seven year old that we have had since he was 6 months. I wouldn’t trade him for anything, he is like my best friend ❤️ and like I said in my previous comment, the personality and playfulness is one of a kind with this breed. He is by far the most loyal dog that myself and my family have had up to this point. I wouldn’t trade him for all the money/objects in the world

We adopted a mini American Eskimo. she's 6mo old now. She has been a wonderful addition to our family. She does sometimes do the bored chewing thing. It has mainly happened at night, while we sleep, so kenneling for bed time was a must in the beginning. Now she usually sleeps at the end of our bed with no problems. She has a wonderful personality. She's goofy, playful, and very loving. She consoles my daughter when my daughter is upset by sitting next to her and offering her a paw. No doubt they'll be life long companions. She is SO smart. She learned to sit, lay down, and speak within 2 days of working with her. Now she's added "up" (dancing around on back paws), roll over, heel, shake, and "high five" (putting both paws up to touch your hand). We love her dearly, but our cats don't. She chases them and wants to play with with as if they were dogs, which they don't appreciate. lol. But even they can tolerate her. One look into her deep, dark eyes with those perfect little white eye lashes and anyone would be sold!

The German Spitz is the grandfather of both breeds. In Europe the Spitz dog has been since the medieval times, nobles liked to have white Spitz, these dogs were then brought to England and bred smaller. In France and Germany the Great Spitz guarded the vineyards from thieves. The Pomeranian is a breeding line from England that has spread worldwide and is therefore recognized in many countries as its own breed. In Germany he belongs to the breed "German Spitz" here he is also called dwarf Spitz (=Pomeranian), they are less teddybear-like but rather in the original vintage shape. The American Eskimo Dog is almost a copy of the German Spitz (but also other breeds have been mixed in). It is also available in different sizes: German Great Spitz , German medium Spitz, German small Spitz ,German dwarf Spitz, our brother Keeshond is called "German" Wolf Spitz who is also very common in Denmark, so there were 2 types of the Danish Keeshond and the German Keeshond (wolf spitz), in Germany the Keeshond is bred in the old vintage shape in America rather in the Danish type (lighter, much more coat). Unfortunately the German Spitz is not recognized properly in America although it is clearly defined in the FCI. The WW2 is to blame that this breed has a bad reputation. The history of the German Spitz and his offspring is long, even the Japan Spitz is said to have come out of him.

Thanks for the historic overview. I love German breeds - most of all the Eskies (German Spitz), but I also love the Pinschers (miniature and Doberman) and Schnauzers (sorry for the spelling)

I had a female Pom named Jupiter. I lost her recently to heart failure in June. She was 13. She had a HUGE personality which is also why I called her Jupiter. She was the best thing that ever happened to me. She was my guardian and behaved like my mother and she wasn't scared of anything. Poms are prone to collapsing trachea and Jupiter suffered from that in her later years.
:( Her last day when she was falling over due to heart attacks, I had to put her down. She deteriorated in the space of a day. I gave her the last hours treating her the best I could. She's been treated like a princess her whole life though but her last day, I gave only her the attention. My other dogs knew she was sick so they didn't fight for attention. UP to her last moments she had a HEALTHY appetite and attitude. She weighed five pounds but when they put her down, and I picked up her little body to mourn her, she felt like she weighed 10. My sweet baby Jupiter. I will always miss her.
One of my other dogs is a Pomchi named Justice. He is still a puppy at a year old. He used to be so jealous of Jupiter and they used to fight for attention, but that last day, he was the most gentle I've ever seen him with her.
Jupiter was elegant, strong, resilient, and loyal. I've known an Eskimo as well and both are beautiful breeds. However, Poms are way less tolerant of small children.

I have wanted an American Eskimo (toy) dog for over a decade. I LOVE them. I have been looking around lately, and I think I have narrowed in on my breeder. I think they're both beautiful dogs and I'm sure the Pomeranian has a loyal fan base, but it's the Eskie that stole my heart.

Our 1st Eskimo passed away last year in August. 4 days later we adopted a brother & sister Eskimo from a rescue shelter. The house felt soooo empty for those 4 lonely days without a dog in the house. We went to go pick one of the available Eskimos at the rescue center, but once we saw how attached they were to each other, we brought both of them home. Best dogs ever!

i have a pom and my friend has a eskimo, they look quite similar but have huge different in personalities, my pom does tend to be bossy, but generally she is very quite, meanwhile my friend 's eskimo gets VERY excited whenever he sees another animal.

I love my 7 year old American Eskimo Nanook! He is such a cool little guy. He is very lovable and very loyal but only to his family and people he knows well. He loves to play and is very energetic ALL the time. The puppy stage with this breed tends to last longer than others so be prepared for a bit longer training times. They are definitely worth it though, the personality of Eskimo’s is one of the best and friendliest I’ve seen in any dog!

I have had two standard American Eskimo mixes, and they are wonderful dogs. Both girls were easy to train (except house breaking), intelligent, and ready for any adventure. My first one was very friendly and people oriented, the second was more hesitant and preferred the company of other dogs, but both were never aggressive and were trustworthy around people of any age. If I am ever in a position of getting another dog (have 2 right now), an Eskie is definitely at the top of my list.

We babysat a Pom, 3 times a year for 7 years and he was a delight. We are cat people but agreed to a trial visit when neighbours were stuck. I was worried about my oldest cat, she was such a b*tch. The Pom took both cats in stride, ignored them and gave the shy, scardey-cat a wide berth. Caught the B-Cat curled up with the Pom during the trial visit so, no probs, we're here to babysit.
Our daughter was very young when Kipp-a-Dogg first visited and he had no problems with the toddler. He was such a cheerful, friendly, loving little guy we loved having him as part of our household.
The only problem was that he was so light in weight compared to the cats, and he didn't know that if the baby makes noise in the night, Mama is moving so he went on a bit of a flight the first night in the house. After that, he woke me before the baby did and got out of the way.
He finally made friends with the shy cat when they learned that they both loved to play fetch with a drinking straw. Hilarity ensued.

They are both beautiful breeds. I have a rescue Pom. We've had him for 10 years and couldn't be more in love with him. He doesn't shed, which I consider a huge plus. He is definitely MY baby. When I leave to do the grocery shopping, he whimpers and stares at the door until I return. He is a little velcro dog--never leaving my side. And yet, he can be bossy--trying every trick in the book to make me give him food. Its hard to resist giving in to him, but I don't want a fat, unhealthy dog, so for his own good, he gets only what he needs. But don't worry, regular treats are also figured in to his daily diet. He is a little charmer whenever someone comes to the house, wagging his tail and licking them.

I watched your video to get an idea of how you do your comparisons. I owned an American Eskimo when I was growing up, but never knew about their history, only their personality. They are good dogs for a single person, as they are attached to one person. Muppet, the Eskie I had when I was growing up, adored my Mom. He didn't care too much for anyone else. Muppet loved his daily brushings by me, especially getting his belly brushed. When he was a little puppy, he looked just like a Muppet, therefore, his name. He loved the snow and would take extensive snow baths, especially adoring freshly fallen snow. It would take some to get him up out of the snow so he could do his job. They are easier dogs to train, but Muppet would go on an attack spree whenever any visitors would come over. He loved Grandparents though and knew they were not the enemy. Muppet lost all of his teeth and had nasty smelling breath, due to loving pizza night at my house. We'd have frozen pizza one night a week and Muppet always got a slice. Thanks for putting this video together!

I hear this now quite often that eski’s like one person more than another and my boy was an exception to this. He was raised with my young kids, my husband and I and was certainly a good family dog. He didn’t prefer one person over another. It’s amazing how different some dogs can be from another, even of the same breed.

Keeshond would be a good comparison with Pom and Samoyed. I say this because Keeshonds are by far more like the best qualities of a good Pomeranian than other Spitz breeds. Samoyeds are the next size up and for that reason also an interesting comparison.

Be careful what you wish for in getting a teddy bear type of American eskimo. I thought they were so cute and fluffy, and when I got one found out that the grooming is much more intense! Our previous Eskie had much sleeker fur and was much easier to groom.🙂

The name American Eskimo name comes from WWI when they were called White German Spitzes..."German" was changed to "American" (remember freedom fries instead of French fries?) "Eskimo Kennels" was the name of the kennel that first started full time breeding them in U.S. Barnum Baily Circus first brought them to U.S. as trick dogs, and sold the puppies as they traveled the country.

Both are cute and great dogs! I prefer the Pom because it's smaller and better suited to me! My Pom isn't a moderate shedder. And neither is my mom's. they barely shed and are from two different. But they do need brushing often so they don't mat because their inner coat sheds and stayed tangled or stays inside the fur and can Mat. If left unbrushed they will Mat and shed more.

I had a Pom (who might’ve been a pomino) and then got an eskie after my Pom passed, and their temperament was the reverse compared to what this video is saying. My eskie doesn’t really shed. My Pom shed a whole lot. My Pom was protective and not social with people they didn’t know. My eskie is super social even with strangers.

Perhaps a better understanding about the fit of the Volpino is in order. Queen Victoria was given a couple of spitz dogs from Italy. She referred to them as toy Pomeranians. These were in fact Volpino Italiano dogs. They were smaller than the Poms of those days and helped start the direction of the reduction of the size of the Pom. As for the Eskies, yes Volpinos were included but not for the standards but rather the miniature and toy to help with size and white coat. The standard Eskie would only have Volpino by chance not likely by intent as the dog is too small to add value to the standard size.
