Seriously this caliber of talent and writing. This is a show that truly touched hearts of any who watched. My daughter at 9 started watching with me. And it brings tears to her eyes the same as the rest of us who are fans. She is 13 now and will always sit with me and rewatch all episodes. I love our time together. Thanks M.A.S.H.

Harry Morgan nicely said in one of the museum of television history interviews that he felt MASH had more time to go and that Alan Alda never really had that type of success elsewhere which is true. I think MASH never got stale and never lost its edge which is rare for a long running tv program. RIP Harry Morgan. You were tremendous.
Im 21 and ive alway watched mash with my family and still to this day. Now its going on 12 years since my grandfather passed from his 2 year long battle with stage 4 lung cancer, When Im missing my grandfather I will finding myself watching all the potter episodes over and over cause he looks and sounds identical and thats the closest thing I got to my grandfathers voice left as i curl up in grandpas flannels and Ill never be able to thank the actors enough for making mash such an important part of my life and even more so now. Thank you all ❤

I just wanna hug this man in deep appreciation and thank him and everyone so much for having made a show for over a decade that STILL resonates with people because it speaks to the very human side of us. And that is a quality that not many TV shows or movies (or Art in general) have. And that is why this show will always be relevant. This show managed to walk that thin line between silly and serious drama with so much class. Even as a kid in the 90s i could see that quality when i watched that show on TV every weekday.
I was in high school when MASH the Movie came out and in College for the first few years of MASH the TV Series was on. The "anti-war" feel of both cannot truly be felt without the backdrop in real life of the Vietnam War happening simultaneous to the Movie experience. Anyone can enjoy MASH but unless you're over about 55 you can't comprehend the gut feeling of watching it while America was tearing itself apart over the War. Just my opinion but us "old guys" probably get what I'm trying to share. RIP-Harry Morgan and McLean Stevenson.
Well said. Not at all taking away from younger people, but there was something intangible about that era...one of those "you had to be there..." times. Hard to actually put into words. I was twelve when the original movie came out. Saw it that Summer and never forgot it....never will. (Interestingly, M.A.S.H. -the movie- was paired up in a double feature that night with the movie "Patton".) The M.A.S.H. TV series did a brilliant job continuing and building on the original story line.
I agree with one exception those that have served in combat. I never seen combat but, served in Intel and the sneering and sometimes rude comments we get I, myself have gotten them from my own family.
Spot on Randy. College time during 'nam gave the movie & the series much more meaning & emotion. There was relief in the human response, "...see, I'm not the only one that sees through this terrible useless war...!"
I was five when this went off the air. I remember crying in March ‘83. Like losing family members all at once. Love this show and the characters associated with it. 😢❤️
I was 9 going on 10 a few months later. I recall the episode was close to ending, I got up went to my room to get a book so I can hide my face so my parents wouldn't see me crying at the end. We were lucky to have cable at the time to see it since we lived in an area without a CBS affiliate. Still watch the reruns today.
Great video. One that I have never seen before. When Harry Morgan, aka Colonel Sherman T. Potter got choked up towards the end of the video, it was heartwarming to see Alan Alda comfort Harry with reassuring back rub. Clearly those actors cared very much about each other.
I still watch repeats of this show on Fox Classics ( what Americans call 'reruns' ). Without a doubt this show never gets old, it never gets tiresome, it never gets repetitive. It is pleasurable & joyous to watch & ALL of the exceptionally talented actors who play the various characters in this TV series were absolutely perfectly matched & suited to their roles. Brilliant & Timeless are the only two words that come to mind to describe this absolute gem of American Television History.
If you didn't grow up with this show or haven't ever watched it you are really missing something. Greatest show by far in my life time. Nothing comes close.

Harry Morgan was brilliantly cast as Colonel Potter. He was the adult whom the "kids" in the cast needed. Much better than the McClain Stephenson's character - more believable.

I strongly disagree with the last part as well! Part of the brilliance of casting was bringing in characters that were completely different than the characters they replaced. Potter was different than Henry. BJ was different than Trapper. Charles was different than Frank. ALL were brilliant. If they had tried to bring in characters that were the same as the ones they replaced the show would have failed.
The show was always brilliantly written/acted with deep character lines created etc. That being said, it was funnier in a belly laugh sorta way earlier with Stevens, Linville etc. The great writing/acting kept it watchable later on when took such a downward Leftist spiral.

I have done quite bit of reading about the Korean war as a career retired soldier/history student with two college degrees. I have studied warfare and military history for a long time. MASH as a TV series is based upon the real stories of Korean war veterans. I think despite showing the horrors of war, MASH dignifies service to the nation in its own humble way. Most military people liked MASH. You understand war is awful, terrible, exhausting and difficult to deal with afterwards. But serving with a bunch of people who become your family, inspires you in a quiet way. On one level you don't want to be in a war due to the killing and death but on the other level, you realize the friendships and closeness you feel in your platoon family is something you will never experience anywhere else in civilian life. MASH brought this out on television in its own way. I think the most important thing to remember is that serving your country in a quiet, solemn way, even in wartime, is an experience you never get anywhere else. In civilian life so much stress is placed on your own PERSONAL success. However, the teamwork and feeling of I have to work with others in this platoon family, otherwise I might be killed or worse my friends will be killed. This feeling of I don't want to let people down is something few civilian occupations beyond police, fire, and medical experience. So a traumatic environment brings out the teamwork and friendship of depending upon others, you don't get anywhere in the civilian world. You can see the teamwork and comraderie in MASH on television. But if I had the choice between being rich and famous or serving in the Army for 20 more years, I would take the 20 years of military service without thinking a minute about it.
Harry is right about the humor. There’s three layers to the humor. The first, where kids can get the slapstick comedy. The second level is the humor at a teenager/adult level and the third is the humor only a veteran can get. This goes for the dramatic scenes as well.... Truly an excellent show.
I could tell the cast loved each other.always loved that show.Good memories watching it with my parents and brothers.too young to understand some of the humor and content but I understand now and still watch it to this day.thank you very much.
Watched Seasons 10 & 11 during this pandemic. Harry Morgan nailed it when he said M.A.S.H. gave us all a sense of Nobility. A trait we can exemplify during this Time in his/herstory.🏆💛

Great insight casting him. The MASH did not have a character that qualified as a dad to or figure head leading the cast. Potter provided a sentimental and traditional pivot that represented the US Army's values leading up to 1953 and why many chose to choose the armed forces as a career. Henry Blake was a great character too, but was more gullible, affable, aloof, and pessimistic. In interviews Harry Morgan opined about the best traits of what made Colonel Potter great, really I think Harry was explaining in retrospect his own career goals and premise to successful acting. As a side note there is no other character who I wanted to see what happened to him after the war and AFTERMASH provided a window of someone still wanting to serve.
Yeah, what always interests me is how much of the actor there is in the character. From what he says, there was a lot of the actors in the MASH characters. I find it rather fascinating that, in a way, the better an actor is the less they're 'acting' - and the more they become the person they're playing. And, for all of us, when are we 'really' who we are, and when are we playing a role?
Harry Morgan was not the most believeable actor of his generation - he was the most believeable actor of all times. Never seen a person become the role he played irl, and have his rl turn into his character in such a way, the closest you'd come is Robert Downey Jr. in Iron man where he plays a clone of him self.
That's not a pity; it's a downright lie. Seinfeld has got nothing on MASH. Seinfeld was nothing but mindless drivel that I couldn't even manage to get through one episode of; it was so bad. MASH had life, death, reality, heart and feeling. Seinfeld had nothing.
NEVER get caught up in TV fantasy land: In 1996, Morgan was charged with beating his wife. He avoided jail time, and the criminal wife beating charge was dropped in 1997 when he agreed to attend anger management sessions.
I watch all this with great, sincere interest and admiration but out of respect to the fans of the show here, I will not say how I looked down on this show.
First of all, so called "Harry Morgan" wasn't his real name. There was nothing wrong with his actual birth name of Harry Bratsberg. Most likely the change was made as the result of a greedy Studio or Business Manager, with perceived notions of greater recognition accompanied with monetary gains? In reality, it's also shows blatant disrespect for one's parents & their family heritage, just to possibly obtain (not earn) a greater buck?! The ONLY reason a name change should be done, is for a woman when she gets married. If a woman gets married and DOESN'T change her name, then she doesn't accept the sanctity of marriage.
Liked the show. Didn’t like the Hunnicut character. He seemed to try too hard to be funny. When his scenes called for him to be upset or mean, he just went too overboard for me. Irritating 🙄. The character seemed to brown nose Hawkeye too much where Trapper was more funny and seemed more real of a character when he sparred with Hawkeye. The BJ character was just off putting to me. Especially loved Winchester! He blended in quite well. I don’t think that Mike Farrell had as much acting experience under his belt as the other cast. That may have been the problem. He just tried to hard. I didn’t like the character at all. Wish Wayne would have stayed. He was more seasoned as an actor and fit the character like a glove. Loved Loretta too! Such a pretty lady. But Klinger and Radar were my favorites! Jamie’s comedic talent was excellent! So was Frank Burns’ talent. Mike, to me, needed more training as an actor. At least that’s how it seemed to me.
It taught people morals and many life lessons that made those people including myself, try to be a better human to others. So, go troll yourself up the ass.
Still to this day, the best series ever to grace the TV screens.
