Well this 1999 Honda 400ex is one smokey girl...Maybe it just wants to be a 2 stroke lol Check out www.Laptwo.com for motorcycle, ATV, Scooter, and truck parts! Please SUBSCRIBE and SHARE if you enjoyed the video! It helps me out a lot! Thanks for all the support!
Oil rings could be buggered or or it could have a lot of oils built up in the the exhaust i had one and it had same problem which was just the exhaust best of take the tip off and put the rest in a hot Fier and it will clear it all out
It’s definitely more put toward valve seals but the oil ring could be going bad but it isn’t the worst because my 400ex has a bad oil ring and it won’t even run half decent because the thing runs with oil in the gas due to a bad oil ring.
Definitely needs a top end . Smoke under load / power is rings . These 400s are known to get smokey . Need to get a mic and some telle gauges and measure the cyl and piston to see if she's within spec .
More than not a bad valve guide will smoke on startup and clear out as it warms up with an occasional puff of smoke. My bet is rings as well, gets progressively worse as it warms up.
It's the oil ring but might as well replace the whole ring set. For someone who flips so many older bikes, I don't think I've ever seen you hone ONE cylinder. That little bit (bit) goes a long way. What's happening is there is wear on the rings or possibly the cylinder wall. On the down strokes, the oil is making it's way into the combustion area above the piston and igniting. Hence the smoke. Just like in a 2 stroke, your burning lesser refined petrol. Since a four stroke has such high compression, it's still running but if this were a two stroke, that little bit of blow-by would cause stalling or failure. It could also be valve seals or the valves themselves as oil could be making it's way into the combustion chamber from above.
Lol I don't believe that every engine needs maintenance 4 strokes need the valves lashed every so often and in this video it needs rings lol 2 strokes run forever lol alot of plane engines are 2 stroke
@@Stoner-dk8ox Notice i did say Honda 4 strokes. The motors definitely depend on the owner/rider and the make. I don't care what anyone says, a 4 stroke honda is the most reliable engine ever put on a cycle. Period.
The 400ex is known for quick piston ring failure and valve seal failure both causing smoke my 02 400ex has a bad oil ring on the piston causing the engine to run like a two stroke mixing oil in the gas burning the oil
Honda’s do run forever. I had a ‘97 300ex and it went over a year without me putting oil in it and it still started up every single day with no hassle. Even after I got rid of it, it still ran fine on the same top end and everything. He just told me the other day it still runs lol.
Nothing but a new oil ring is gonna fix the dam smoking. Maybe just maybe the vales are not seated right. But i like how optimistic you are it not needing to be rebuilt tho. I do the same ill try everything else before i break down a fix the problem u gotta try atleast. An have u started learning how to properly tune things. I know ive said it in the past but you'll get alot more performance out of any bike if you know how to tune. An pls dont use a flat head to gwt the 2 cases apart you will dent it an it will not seal right yes im sure you where carful an what not but so was I when i use to do that untill u put a hairline gash in a case once an had to double up on gaskets. An yes i did sand it down to get a flat surface so it sealded again but use a dead blow hammer or tap on the case to get 1 to fall off.
ya dont need to split the cases to fix a smokey exhaust, its a top end issue, on a single cylinder 4 stroke it would take half a day so rebuild that top end. dont even need to pull the engine out.
Ver happy for you joe the way that the channel has grown and im glad that you get do what you love everyday keep up the good worl and congrats to you and jade on the new house 👍
Your not supposed to twist the dip stick in when checking the oil level. Just push it in until it stops on the threads. So you probably have less oil than you actually think
These quads are notorious for valve seals I’ve changed them more times than I’d like to count here at my shop. I wouldn’t waste your time with cleaning the carburetor and I wouldn’t give it an oil change until after you change the valve seals and have the motor apart.
It's not valve seals as the smoke would clear after a short run time but the smoke is pretty consistent. Try dropping the viscosity of the oil and replacing oil rings. A four strokes oil rings can blow while the compression rings are still good and the bike runs great. So a thicker oil synthetic oil, and new rings.
I just rebuilt a 2007 new cam valve valve ceets but if it’s been smoking before u got it then there is oil in the exhaust it will smoke until it burnt out
you are correct. after you take it out you wipe it off and then place it back in all the way do not thread it back in. Just stick it in and back out and thats the oil level. However the jug makes it pretty forgiving. If you are doing it from the crank case that oil would need to be perfect.
Its actually a pretty common problem with these quads, a lot of the old ones that you find around normally smoke. As other people have already said its the valve seals. My suzuki 230 somtimes burns a little oil when its started after sitting for a while.
I'll tell you what happen to my recon 250....I sank it in muddy water and it started smoking after that so I would guess that may have happened to your 400 with that open filter box ?.....I would do a full top end rebuild on it....so worth it to save a classic like that....keep up the great work 👍👍👍
I've unstuck rings with some atf down the spark plug hole on an old atc 200x. I honestly think that's what wrong. If it were the valve seals you would only see smoke on startup after sitting.
I swear it cracks me up when I see negative smart ass comments on this page !!! They are just jealous it’s not them doing good on UA-cam !! Keep it up brother ! Love all the content I don’t miss a video an I appreciate you buying all the varieties of quads an bikes so glad I found this channel awhile ago ! Keep doing exactly what you have been everybody likes it
you should blow all that crap off the carb with an airline before putting it in the cleaner then all that thick grime isnt flowing through you're carb and fouling up you're fluid
If you're gonna pull the top end apart may as well do a complete top end service! Sad part is you just wasted money on the new oil you just put in and please don't attempt to reuse it! Get rid of the K&N filter and get a good quality air filter for it while your at it! Once done follow the proper break in procedure to seat the rings.
Everything this man said ^ k&n is a no go for any dusty environments. Atleast get a filter sock. k&n oil filters are a different story though. They work great and are the best you can buy for the money.
Great video. You made some good progress on that machine. I feel it needs that top end re-build. I think you’ll have a good solid machine after that. I’d hang on to it. They don’t make sport quads like that anymore. Nice 4 stroke for those winter rides around your new neighborhood! Just throw a silencer in there. Keep up the videos.
I have an o1 rancher. Put new piston and rings and an used ebay head. With new valve seals...smokes almost as bad as this one does...runs great though!
If your case vent is going into your air box the filter will pull oil in the carburetor? When poping wheelies this happens to some quads or Yamaha tri moto 200
Hail the king of the trails 400ex. Its not always about straight line speed. For a sport atv for trails the 400ex or 400x is about as good as it gets. and to me is Plenty fast. They did a full video on replacing the piston and jug with a kit they sell for like 200 bucks. and they show step by step instructions. 400 is an amazing bike... You wont sell this one easy..
You know what you have to do, tear it down, replace what you have to then enjoy a nice crispy quad or sell it for more money! Fix the damn thing you have the cash!
If it is valve seals they are not super hard to do but like you said you might as well do rings since its a couple of more bolts to make sure the motor feels good and do break it in those gaskets on the head really to need time to set in my buddies blew his valve cover gasket directly after rebuilding the whole motor because he decided to tp rip on it for like 10 15 minutes during break in
First thing I would have done is check the rings. Its a Honda the fuel and carb were all fine and that wouldn't cause it to consume oil the rings may be bad or the rings may have moved and lined up on the piston . The rings need to be spaced apart with there gap if they aren't itll continue to smoke long as its like it is. So thats about the only thing that'll cause oil consumption is the rings are put of place or need replacing. Even if it was the valves you'd be able to tell right off by the sound and it won't run right.
Check your valves Honda 400ex are known for valve issues. The ltz/kfx/dvx are known for electrical problems. I’ve owned multiple 400ex and ltz and all the 400ex needed valves adjusted
I've had few and best trail machines I've ever owned and I been riding and buying brand new Honda and Yamaha for over 35yrs now never had any overheating issues even on hottest days riding with my gf on the back and just putting around for one whole summer on one lol

Oh shit not a blown WD-40 seal they are a pain to replace! Could be the WD-40 after burner thruster valve is plugged and preventing it to advance to warp speed mode.
Drop a 11.5:1 compression piston in there bro . That motor is like a very low compression motor . In fact you might be able to get a 12:1 wiseco that can run 91 fuel . It will make it way faster . I think it’s a 9:1 piston stock . Might want to throw a cam in there too . It will be way faster bro !
Start with a set of rings , it can have good compression an the oil still get passed the oil ring , way easier job then to try an do valve seals first , i wouldnt run it like that youll hurt something more in the long run , if its burning that much oil its not valve seals
hey joe would you be able to ship any bikes or quads to stamford ct? i can pay for shipping. tell me if you have anything for sale(it has to be in good condition.)

Its most likely just the oil rings I had the same problem on my xr250 burnt so much oil it covered your back when you rode it just put an oil ring in it and was fine
Hey I have a 99 400ex & it runs decent on low end around my yard but when racing or any full throttle runs after I pull in the clutch to slow down the quad dies. New carb but a aftermarket car, anyone kno my issue?
That thing needs a top end. New piston and rings, valve seals shouldnt blow that much consistant smoke. If smoke is thin when under load, valve seals, if smoke is heavy under load, Piston rings.

Exactly!!

Correct. It'll smoke at first and go away. Rings if its a constant smoke.. unless you literally have no valve seals lol.

It needs a top end mines did the same thing I try everything and it smoked till I put a top end
Wheel shake could be caused by the tires being toed outward.

To check the oil you need to have the bike run for a little
It needs new rings on the piston. Had the same problem. Fixd mine.
Hey I have a question do you have to jet a carburator if you put a slip on on the bike
Use that back break and learn the balance point. Get those front tires up there! The easiest to learn is to tip her over a few times.
Piston, and rings are cooked man, its bypassing through the cylinder and burning oil
Love your content bro nothing but love for ya 💯💯
Thank you!
Mine smoked but just put little oil in before a ride and never had a problem with it had plenty of power
Ex 400 are common to have bad valve stem oil seals overtime, change them and guarantee it won't smoke

I have also problem with my Zongshen 250 quad. When i rode one lap in forest it starts smoking blue. Please can someone give me advice.
When checking the oil do not screw the oil cap in that was very low
Why do you hold the clutch in when you start it ? If it’s neutral you don’t have too.
Its most likely just the oil rings I had the same problem on my xr250 burnt so much oil it covered your back when you rode it just put an oil ring in it and was fine
You should make a video on cleaning a gas tank there is rarely any videos
Hey I have a 99 400ex & it runs decent on low end around my yard but when racing or any full throttle runs after I pull in the clutch to slow down the quad dies. New carb but a aftermarket car, anyone kno my issue?
You need a bigger sonic cleaner bud .
Why still tear up daddy's grass that he seems to take pride in manicuring and oil slicking his driveway?
I think I found the funny
If you run your finger around the end of the exhaust and if it feels gummy that means ur burning oil which means u need new rings
I had a Suzuki quad sport ltz 400 it did the same thing it was the valve seals
That thing needs a top end. New piston and rings, valve seals shouldnt blow that much consistant smoke. If smoke is thin when under load, valve seals, if smoke is heavy under load, Piston rings.
it's your oil ring that needs to be changed on your piston might as well just change your rings to
new top end
