dead boys poem and poet and the pendulum are tuomas's most personal songs and Floor's voice and performance take them on another level. i cry everytime i hear them.

Floor is able to bring out the soul of each song. Just what Tuomas' masterpieces needed. She always sings in service of the music. For sure, there's stage presence in spades, but no act to draw attention to herself. She's actually so selfless that she can afford to become a medium for the story to be told and the music to flow freely. No ego in between. That's the energy & emotion I feel each time I listen to this music. This is way beyond singing. Cheers from Amsterdam!

Floor's rendition of this one is so powerful it moved me to tears when I first saw/heard it. It was written long before she joined band but she really creates an empathic delivery. It's an amazing composition by Tuomas and performance by all. Thanks for the great reaction!

Great reaction to a great old Nightwish song that Floor made her own. My favorite Emppu solo as well. One of Tuomas’s most emotional pieces. Keep exploring Nightwish. Might be time for The Greatest Show on Earth. Eventually, The Poet and The Pendulum, probably Tuomas’ most emotional masterpiece, will blow you away, but perhaps getting to know the band and their history first would be best. Enjoy!

    • @ValtteL

Only research needed to The Poet and The Pendulum is that kicking first singer out was a very big deal back in the day. Media circus what happened in Finland surprised Tuomas. Many fans and media guys blamed Tuomas. There are fan fictions about Tuomas being suicidical which is not true. The song works even if you don’t know the history completely.

This is a very emotional and personal song for Tuomas. The small child's voice represents Tuomas' inner child speaking.
When asked what this song was about "Tuomas has said about this song, that it's about if he were to die tomorrow, what would he want to say to everyone that he loves, and that love him..."
Notice the small boy on the screen reaching out to the flying swans on the screen. The swan is the guide to the afterlife in Finnish mythology. He is reaching out to implore them to take him with to the other side. A beautiful song filled with sadness from an unfulfilled destiny.

Pandora! You already made me all choked up just by reading the meaning of the song like that! Geesh...
This is such a beautiful, delicate song, to me (and I know for many others as well) this one is special because this is a young Tuomas talking to us, the double cadence on the phrase "I wish I didn't feel for you anymore" always makes me cry, but then the queen manages to bring the positivity back with the second part of the song, is so powerful and uplifting, that you can't help but smile through the tears. Complex feelings caused by an special, complex and beautiful man's masterful mind

Thank you for explaining the meaning behind it. I tried looking it up in the past but I've only gotten different stories that didn't quite make sense, yours is much more believable. The only thing I could find is the boy talking is 11 years old. I've seen the video alot, when Floor raises her hands during this part of the crescendo always gets me. It is by far my favorite song. @@PandoraPlaysMusic According to Tuomas, the song is the “mother of all Nightwish songs,” about himself and how he wants people to remember him as when he passes away. He said
"This is the most personal song I’ve ever written. My testimony for the whole world. With this song I want to apologise everyone who deserves my apology. It also makes an “I don’t care” -statement to them who deserve it. The song is also about what Nightwish means and has meant to me. It’s all, without it I’m dead. I have created it and it has created me.
When I pass away, this song’s lyrics are of what I wish to be remembered. An Ocean Soul."

  • @WardDorrity
    @WardDorrity 2 роки тому +6

There is so much genius in this work that it is difficult to know where to begin. Everything, from the stage set to the lyrics to the music itself has a purpose. Floor's heart-rendingly beautiful performance is beyond comparison - only she could deliver the emotional truth of this work. There is so much more here to understand.
Note the swans in the background - these are the swans of Tuonela, said in Finnish mythology to be the conveyors of souls to the afterlife. Note how the boy has his arms raised in the hope and the longing of embracing that journey, yet - there he remains. It's worth a listen to Sibelius' The Swan of Tuonela to see where part of Tuomas ' inspiration came from. Here's Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker: ua-cam.com/video/HjyLWoJvtME/v-deo.html. Exquisite.
Emppu's ravishingly beautiful solo is David Gilmour class in the way it conveys the sadness, the anguish of a soul who has been left behind in a lonely and forsaken world. It's a cry of anguish, reinforced by the funereal march of the music behind and complementing the solo. You'll hear that same sort of expression in David Gilmour's last solo of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. I always felt that towards the end, it became the funeral march of a lost and tormented soul. All of the anguish and regret of something glimpsed and lost is distilled and channeled into one extended searing cry. So it is with Emppu's solo, yet it is so deftly and effortlessly woven into this masterpiece of Tuomas' that you don't quite realize what it's doing to you. Note that there is none of Emppu's usual smirking or goofing around in this one. He is dead serious (excuse the pun) and it shows in his expression. So much so that he has to turn away from the audience when he is done.
This is what the composer/keyboardist of Nightwish, Tuomas Holopainen, has said about this song: "This is the most personal song I’ve ever written. My testimony for the whole world. With this song I want to apologise everyone who deserves my apology. It also makes an “I don’t care” statement to them who deserve it. The song is also about what Nightwish means and has meant to me. It’s all, without it I’m dead. I have created it and it has created me. When I pass away, this song’s lyrics are of what I wish to be remembered. An Ocean Soul".
I should add, Pandora, that you are among a handful of reactors who get what's going on here. Of that handful, you and another reactor who calls herself Mental Amanda (she's a suicide survivor) truly understand what Tuomas is conveying to us. We insist that Tuomas is a genius and yes, he is all that and more. But for all that, he is a modest man who hungers for comprehension and yes, love. Fortunately for him (and for the world), he is married to another Finnish vocal angel, Johanna Kurkela - so love at last. And unsurprisingly, they and Troy create beautiful music together. The desire for wisdom in Tuomas' soul will never be quenched, and we should feel fortunate that we happen to inhabit the same world line that he does.

Not sure you should read those song analyses from songfacts, because their name should be changed to load of BS.
The song is about Tuomas himself. He stated more than once he had a very happy childhood.
He wrote this song at age 22. Just a few years before he was a regular Finnish teenager, but at age 22 he all of a sudden was the composer and bandleader of Finlands biggest export product over iron ore and forestry. He lives for the music and "The Child" (aka Nightwish), but it comes at a cost: He has to make very adult decisions to make it work. The responsibility of hundreds jobs hanging in the balance on his performances and creativity. That responsibility weighs on him.
I think at the time he was not yet ready to be the great Tuomas-Metal-Mozart, but he was no longer young Tuomas either.
At this point in time he struggles with being so popular and identifies more with the boy-Tuomas that no longer exists ("dead boy")
Tuomas told in an interview that (at the time) he wrote the song as a eulogy...this is what he wanted people to remember if he were to die.
