  • My 30-year-old Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AI-S lens suffered from a problem all too common for this lens: diaphragm lubricating oil smearing onto the aperture blades causing them to stick together. Since the repair looked pretty simple, and the lens was toast anyway, I decided to see if I could bring it back to usable condition.

I have the same lens, same problem. I followed the video step by step and now my lens is super clean. THANKS A LOT!

Nice video -thanks. A couple of builds: using a "JIS" (Japanese Industry Standard) screwdriver instead of a normal Philips one will ensure a correct fit to screws and reduce chance of damaging heads. Nikon use threadlocker on various screws -this can be loosened by applying a soldering iron to the screw head for around 30 seconds -makes disassembly easier! Cheers!

I was about to post much the same but now there is no need. Needless to say though I agree with the above.
I will add one further thing though. I have cleaned my 50mm f1.4 AIS a couple of times and the problem can reappear after a short time. Mine did this. The only sure way to fix it is a total disassembly including cleaning the focussing helicals and replacing the grease. This also requires a total disassembly and cleaning of the aperture blades too. Though I have done it before with other lenses, it is a bugger of a job unless you are experienced. I find that some Nikkor lenses seem particularly prone to this problem - my 105mm f1.8 is the same.

Thank you for this video. Very informative. I've owned my Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI-S lens forever and suddenly oil appeared on the blades which made the aperture stick. So I followed your step by step example. I could disassemble the lens (without the need of my spanner wrench). I cleaned the blades and the two halves of the aperture assembly. I then put the blades back and finished sandwiching the aperture assembly with small spring. It works fine. Now, my issue is getting the aperture assembly back into the lens barrel. I tried at least a dozen time with no success. Each time the silver pin could not find the right spot in the lens barrel. The opening is more like a slot (not a simple round opening), so I guess that I am not hitting the right spot. Then each time that I've tried, the aperture assembly comes apart with blades falling all over the place. This is so frustrating. I'm close but cannot finish assembling the lens. If there was a way to keep the two halves of the aperture assembly together while I try to insert it, then that would be perfect. But there seems to be no way. Maybe the factory workers and repair people have a special tool (some kind of jig) to hold the aperture assembly together while trying to fit it into the lens barrel? I need some help here - please!!! Thanks, Steve

It can be opened, but you will need to loosen the treadlock with small amount of acetone. I normally soak the glass element in 6% Hydrogen Peroxide for few minutes, and so far every time I used this method, the fungus went away. You will have to clean the lens with alcohol at the end. I hope this helps.
