  • In this video I discuss buying used records online: how I buy them, where I buy them, the pros, the cons, and what to look out for! Buying used records online doesn't have to be a drag; you just have to be aware that there are risks and how to properly navigate the dominant apps and websites that sell used vinyl records!

Hello Again Hanna - I've been selling & buying on eBay since 2000 & it's the most reliable for me. It saddens me to see two great records by Tom Verlaine & The Church arrive thrashed. Dreamtime was my 2nd favorite album of 1981 between Sleep No More by The Comsat Angels & Heaven Up Here by Echo & The Bunnymen. Nice to see the tribute to Chris Bailey. Stranded is a punk classic. Happy Easter 🐣 !

I miss the Lincoln Homers, that place was awesome. Then Zero Street was right next door. Recycled Sounds down the road. I've had good luck buying vinyl online, but I do appreciate the community interaction when going to an actual store. I've never really checked out the shops in Omaha, have to take a weekend and swing over there sometime. I'm glad your move is going well, good luck with that and good luck buying records!

Hey Jason! Crazy enough, I never made it to the Lincoln Homer store. I made it to recycled sounds just before they close there and move to the Omaha location. I really miss the other Omaha Homer’s stores. Growing up I lived within walking distance of one. Chris and I go to Lincoln probably once every two months to check out the record stores there. We really like Lincoln vintage vinyl and I have also found some great gems at Lefty’s. I appreciate the well wishes on my move!👍🏻😁🎶 Be well!

Hello Hanna; Always good to post an informational video. Convenience in ordering is a pro as is comparing prices. The con being the consumer's are at the mercy of the buyer in grading & packaging of a record. We know people who run an online E Bay outfit on Long Island, NY that we would never buy from. Amazon's return policy is decent & covers third party sellers. The Church record scratch is brutal, good that you were able to receive a full refund. Good luck with your future purchases. Take care, Happy Easter. Tina & Pat!~

Greetings Hanna. This is a very timely video for me. I have been wanting to buy a decent turntable for some time now, but just can't afford one. My brother was fully aware of this and recently shipped me a brand new Pioneer plx1000, and also a very expensive cartridge that he had shipped from Japan. Anyway, God bless him!. I have yet to buy a single record, and have been collecting cds for years. My landlord has a couple of boxes of vinyl which have been in storage since the 80s. My cleaning of them consisted of a quick wipe with a clean bandana, and I instinctively knew that this just is not efficient, or wise.. So thank you for the validation that a proper cleaner needs to be used. I am looking forward to starting a vinyl collection, but clearly it will be a slow process because of the expense. When I visit my parents in the LA area,, I will be much more vulnerable to the impulse buying which you mentioned. I'm sorry that the excellent Church album was damaged, and best wishes finding a nice copy. Thanks again and love the t-shirt!

      @TheOmahaIntrovert  2 роки тому +2

Greetings, Todd! Wow, that's some brother you have! How generous! I'm so glad you have a turntable now. How exciting! Yes, definitely invest in a record cleaning machine. If you're on a budget and can't afford the real Spin Clean, there are the more affordable options. My Studebaker one was half the price of the Spin Clean. It had some annoying issues like the cleaning pads that insert into the sides would come up when I pulled the record out but I dealt with it and it still did the job! I'm so glad you found this video helpful. That was the intention of this video! I hope to find a pristine copy of the Blurred Crusade from the Church in the future, thanks! Enjoy the weekend, Todd!

Hi Hanna, Great to see a video from you. I agree with you about the pros and cons of buying used vinyl. IN my experience, I have found that quite a few sellers on ebay don't know how to grade a record. Just recently I bought a record that the seller said was VG+ which it was not. It had many clicks and pops so I would say it was a "Good" at best. But for the most part I have had good luck on Ebay and I try to only buy from sellers I bought from before. As far as Amazon, I don't shop there anymore, I have had too many issues.

Hi Richard. Great to hear from you! Happy weekend! Yeah, the inaccurate grading is the biggest bummer of the online buying experience! I can't stand clicks and pops if it was graded at a VG+! Hello Hanna,
Thx for going thru all your pros/cons about online. At this point I'll only be buying in the Wild, online just seems to risky for someone like me, who has limited funds and doesn't want to hassle about refunds etc. Your tips were very useful, thx.
I found an actual Grail of mine at the Ann Arbor show last Sun.
Nanci Griffith, "Love At The Five and Dime", from 1986, an OC in what I'd call NM for$5!! Also picked up an old 70s fav, Wishbone Ash 4 in great condition for $12. Overall was disappointed at the zero amount of product from late 80s- early 90s, shoe gaze etc..None. mostly 70s or earlier. Great of you to mention the passing of Mr Bailey. Sad indeed. A true legend. I'll be patient in waiting for your Australian extravaganza, maybe this summer after you've settled into your new home.
    Til next time,

    • @TheOmahaIntrovert
      @TheOmahaIntrovert  2 роки тому +1

Hi Mark! So cool that you found that grail at the Ann Arbor show! Congrats! Oh, so you experienced disappointment in the lack of 80s-90s offerings, too. I swear, I had my best luck when I briefly lived in the Olympia, Washington area a few years ago and was able to attend the various record shows in Seattle and Tacoma. I truly found some incredible shoegaze gems there...Kitchens of Distinction, Lush's Gala, etc. Lots of punk and power pop, too. My last "wow" record show was Ft. Lauderdale, Florida last winter. The midwest just isn't delivering for those 80s and 90s LPs unfortunately. Maybe if we speak it into existence things will change?! 😉
And yes, my Australian bands appreciation video will occur after my move. I'm excited about that one! Cheers!

You already know that I am a massive proponent for the support and dedication to the independent record store, and how important it is that we all do our part to contribute to the survival of even the smallest mom and pop store (especially those actually), but there are times where online purchasing is the only way to go and to me, that's ok too. I think you touched on all the important parts. Good video - TONE
P.S. Avoid Popmarket as a seller... CDs are ok but buying vinyl from Popmarket is a death sentence... they know nothing about warehousing their vinyl stock and it comes so screwed up 98% of the time

Your suggestion to buy record lots from ebay is one I hadn't thought of, I've used ebay mostly for singular purchases, so thanks for that idea. I have to admit when I'm buying used at a record store, sometimes I don't even pull the whole record out of the sleeve to inspect. I know...I need to definitely visually inspect both sides. That really would be best. I've been burned a few times from record stores as well. I remember buying a used reissue of Game Theory's first record. It was on pink opaque vinyl. I didn't look at both sides. Sure enough, there was a big scratch on one of the sides.
Enjoy your weekend and hope to see you again next time!

I haven't had any vinyl records damaged in the mail yet but I once had a CD bought on ebay snapped in half jewel case and all. I still left a positive ref as the fault was clearly the postal process as it was packaged fine (the packaging was mangled and scuffed like it was jammed in a sorter or something) and they sent me a replacement copy for free.
I started collecting vinyl in January 2018 too and post punk is also a high priority for me. Small world. Greetings from Australia!

I can definitely sympathize with the Tom Verlaine LP. I consider myself pretty lucky with online purchases but I've had three shipped exactly like that. One of them was from France and while the LP survived, the cover was practically demolished. In another instance, I received an LP from Amazon with nothing but the shipping label slapped on the shrink wrap which was extremely frustrating. With the Church LP, did it play through with the scratch? I have had a few records with scratches like that and they played through with no clicks or pops. Scratches like that usually occur when there are vinyl shavings from a new record that stick on the surface and mare it up when it gets slid in the sleeve. It was likely always there but I wouldn't have rated it as NM. I would have treated it as VG. Great video and I hope this will draw a lot of traffic given the topic. Can't wait to see the new set up in Chris' place when it's all said an done. It's always fun when you get a new Ikea

Paul, hey! Bet you are enjoying some time off for the holiday! I've definitely heard of Amazon shipping records with only a shipping sticker affixed. WTF, right?! So, the Church record plays, but there are plenty of pops throughout that track. It does not skip, but it's enough to annoy the heck out of me and seek out a better copy in the future. It's almost like the seller didn't even look at it. Definitely a VG. I need to catch up on your latest. You know I will get to it and I look forward to any new content from you! ☺️ I'm dreading moving my vinyl and CDs. That's the last piece, along with half of my wardrobe and odds and ends. this was a great video ,an important one,i don,t order a lot of used records ,and the ones i have, ordered used ive been happy with but for me a lot of records if they are old i expect a little scratch ,its the cover art i appreciate,im in the process of getting Elvis,s 50,s singles and ep,s and the art has to be good not perfect but not a big mess either ,the colors used in old pressings are what i look for ,when they reproduce these records the colors and picture can be off a little.packageing is really a good topic, when i was a kid living in Kodiak Alaska,my best friend had left the island about a year before i did,i was so bummed out, missed my friend and really had a crush on his sister, probably real reason i was bummed lol;) anyway one day out of nowhere an everly bros 45 from peter, mailed from the states,i was SO EXCITED only to unwrap it and find it had cracked in half in the shipping, my mind just could not accept it,i kept trying to stick it back together haha well that experience took a long time to get over and all these years later i can still see that cracked record in front of me-- long time ago but yes your right packing is so important, thanks for this video, and hope you and boyfriend have a Happy Easter-

Hey Hanna yes RIP to Chris Bailey :( very handy video for folks new to vinyl, and for those who've been around to share their stories. You could almost argue that by being burnt you work out what is acceptable and not, but there's stuff like your video shows that's good to know before you jump in. Grading is becoming my real bugbear in buying, even on Discogs. Couple war stories lately like your Blurred Crusade (found the Bats first EP on FN and the seller graded as EX, was a vg at best. Hello Hanna! I don't often buy vinyl online-I prefer to see it in person. But sometimes you take a chance. For instance, the Angie single I sent you the artwork for...I would never expect to find that otherwise. I also recently purchased a multitude o' Little Marcy lp's, most o' which I wasn't aware existed. Little Marcy is a puppet that sings Sunday school songs via Big Marcy...a ventriloquist! As weird as it gets...on Word Records from Waco, TX. I played several Little Marcy songs on my radio show just to be outrageously strange 'n was thrilled to find so many more titles from a single seller. Sometimes you get lucky. I have bought a lot of used records by artists I never may have paid attention to, this expands my musical tastes. Plus buying the old forgotten records gives them a new life and home, which I play on my 1967 magnavox console, another thing very few people want.

Hello Hanna ツ Thanks for sharing your experiences buying online. My son has gone through international sources for vinyls for the past couple of years, so far he encountered one situation where the pops and cracks in the record was overwhelming. He tried this solution where you dab it on and allow it to dry, then peel it off. When you peel it off, it gets the obstacles out of the groove along with it, similar to using scotch tape to get something off an object. Buying vinyls has its own set of risks, they really need TLC, which is a missing element as you brought out in a lot of cases. I nearly ruined a Spencer Brewer album by using the wrong type of cleaner, so care has to be taken as well with which cleaner you use. Vinyls are great, but I still prefer CD's. My son and I have been recording from vinyl to a computer using Sonar Producer and Audacity as a wave editor to remove some of the vinyl noise and enhancing the sound through a 16 band EQ which works nice. Incidentally he ordered a prog jazz album from a seller in Quebec Canada, super rare, and lo and behold it was a "produced for air time" album, and autographed by all the band members, still shrink wrapped. What a surprise that was when he received it, the inner sleeve being autographed. So, we have quite a collection. I really enjoy you sharing your finds with us! I look forward to more. Cheers!

Sellers there often include lots of pictures of the jacket, sleeve and disc, which is great, and the next best thing to being there. Examine those pictures carefully on a good screen. Too many cons for me in buying online, Hanna. Shipping from US to here (UK) is exorbitant. More frustratingly, as of July 2021 we have to pay 20% import duty (as we left the EU☹). I got ripped off on a Roxy Music LP on Discogs through poor grading. Somewhere there used to be an upside.

Hey there, Bruce. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts about this topic. Yes, overseas shipping is outrageous right now...and that 20% import duty is a huge drag! It's rare that I buy a record outside the US but for a few of them, that's my only option unfortunately. Cheers!

Good video, I'd say that I've found my best hard-to-find records on eBay, but discogs has been pretty good with a few exceptions. I don't like the fact that discogs sellers don't post photos of what they're selling like they do on eBay. The best and often unexpected finds are always in the wild, but that takes time and a lot of travel. The thrill of the hunt in the wild makes it a great choice for building your record collection. 👍👍👍

I buy 99% of my albums online mainly because I have a disease searching out rare / first presses. Thankfully I’ve had great success but I always ask questions and request more pics from the seller…I’ve even asked for video of the record playing in a area that shows surface scuffs to prove it doesn’t affect playback.

Nice intro. One more thing: sometimes you have to walk away from a bad interaction and just eat it. I value my happiness, and a drawn-out battle is not conducive to that.
Bought a signed copy of one of my favorite artists from a discogs seller in Italy. Unfortunately, a forklift went through the properly packaged record. Did as you with pictures etc. only to get cursed out in Italian (sort of thanks to google translate). PayPal wanted me to return the record to Italy, which would cost more than the refund. I reported the seller to discogs (language unbecoming), and I don't think he is still on there. I made some art out the broken record 🙂
By and large, I have had good experiences with discogs, also staying in >VG+ area. I may be paying a bit of a premium, but generally less likely to get a nasty surprise.
    Good luck with the movie!

All of this could easily apply to buying CD online. Lost count of how many times I got burned on the NEAR MINT claim! Near mint means unsealed but like new, or with only a tiny imperfection. End of story. I should post a list of excuses I've received for it not actually being near mint. Very entertaining. The one that cracks me up is when they say a CD has "only been played a couple times", as if the CD player laser might burn a hole into it if you play it a lot! 😂
One of the most important points: always read the seller feedback. They may have a seemingly high rating but read the negative comments. Inevitably you see patterns in the comments such as "took 2 months to receive my item" or "emails ignored." In those cases I run and look elsewhere.

    • @TheOmahaIntrovert

Yes! Why so many sellers have problems with grading CDs or records is beyond me. Do they need their eyes checked?! 🤣

Thanks for a good video. I unfortunately had two not so good experiences using Discoggs. The albums and covers were listed as NM and they were more at the VG-VG+ level. I am still trying to figure out if people are blatantly lying or they are truly unaware of the rating system? It does not take a genius to figure out the NM means that they are nearly brand new in sound quality and cover quality? I have been reluctant to buy used since then as i paid on average $45.00 for used record(s). I have since waited for new re-releases/pressings of the albums that i wanted so I know what i am getting? I have been able to get 2 new re-releases of The Smiths(Hateful of Hollows) and The Cure (The head on the Door) that sound good. I may try one more time as I would love to get my hands on U2's Joshua Tree Album that is impossible to get brand new?

Discogs used to be very good, but I’m finding too many sellers aren’t even bothering with getting the accurate pressing that they are selling. eBay is the best. You can just go with trusted sellers and pay retail or gamble with new sellers who wouldn’t know a NM record from a G+. Or an original from a reissue as well
The advantage of the new sellers is you can score some great deals on some hard to find originals from bands like
    The Cure
    REM
    Depeche Mode
    Oingo Boingo
    The Church
I’ve been able to pick up titles like these for less than $10 each . If the cover looks worn I just pass on it but if the cover is clean looking you have a better chance of the vinyl also being pretty nice and at $10 a record for a normally $50 - $60 record or higher it’s worth the gamble as long as the cover is clean as stated
Never buy records graded VG or worse .
Sometimes a power seller will get in a batch of rare out of print titles and sell them at original retail price even though the record has quadrupled in price .
