      Yeah I just got back from the vet and had to spend $930 for critical care treatment (oxygen/incubator) because the vet I saw last week made a math error and dosed his antibiotics 10x less than he needed 😢 it's hard to explain to others too, "he has at least a year left in him" doesn't sound like a lot unless you know rats

      @@Snowstar837 Thank you for caring so much for your rattie. I have spent similar amounts on rats and house bunnies in my time. However, that sounds like a horribly overpriced amount for antibiotics. When I first got rats I had a hell of a time finding a vet that was knowledgeable about them - once I did, the costs were DRAMATICALLY reduced because there were no mistakes or diagnostic tests that would not help me or the rat. You might find that the cost of an exotics vet in a nearby major city are far cheaper than your local dog and cat vet for this reason only. I have to drive about 90 minutes to Seattle to see a rat-experienced vet. I also found a compounding pharmacy that worked with me by mail. It reduced the cost of antibiotics from a literal $490 bill to $35. Sometimes local rat clubs can help with finding the best vet. I wish you all the luck with your little baby! The learning curve with rats and their medical problems is steep!

      @@scrubjay93Doesn't sound like the $930 was for antibiotics, sounds like it was for rattie ICU treatment when the too-low antibiotic dose didn't work. :(

    I have a black hooded girl named Toots who can be held and loved but prefers the company of other rats. I think the reason for that is because she was hand raised as a pinky. Once she was integrated with other rats she got extra bonded to them.

    Oiy!!! That is a LOT of rat turds and pee!!! I am down to a very manageable two girls. I was briefly at only one girl.... for only a day. I went to my breeder way up in West Palm Beach and met a recent mommy rat who had finished weaning her kids. She did not even have a name.
    But, she chose me. We don't choose rats, THEY choose us!
    OMG! Fiona was not handled and needed time to get used to me. She immediately, bonded with my one surviving rattie Mabel. I have never seen that happen so fast. It can take weeks for two strange rats to reconcile and accept each other!
    Then, after 5 weeks, Fiona has become my most loving and SWEET rattie EVER!!! She comes up to me all the time for pets, strokes, massages and attention. She is barely interested in treats which is so unusual. Her needs are just affection from her Rat Dad (Me!)

    I have always known how on top of there healthcare you have been. Can you please do an in depth video going over how often you go to the vet (generally and when one of them has a serious issue), pricing for your state, and how much total it would be for 2-3 rats vs. the amount you have (roughly). Along with supplements and diet (what Yuu recommend and cost), because I know those play huge roles as well. You could even include enrichment and costs, because I believe that plays an important role as well in the health of literally any living thing. I know it may be difficult to sum up, but seeing as how you've had so many rats and over several years now, I think you have a wealth of knowledge to share and most people new to rats or interested in having rats really have no idea what to expect, especially if they truly want to give it the best care and life it can have. I know I am clueless! Many people might think they are cheaper pets to own, but I think if you are trying to give a pet who doesn't tend to live long the best life and care it can possibly have to extend it's life while making surethey are comfortable and happy, in many instances, it could cost more than a single cat. My family cat growing up (for example) was a rescue. She was my age andived until I was 18, and we literally never even took her to the vet. Not what I would recommend- (either that or I just never knew and was too small when they did or was in school and they never xommunicated to me) but she lived a long, happy life, and dies of natural causes. We never even had to worry about her health ever! The only time I was concerned was when she was coughing up a hairball (that sh!t is SCARY to see as a child 😅😂😂) and when she was given catnip (I had no idea it was a cat drug nor understood wtf was happening!!😂) but other than that, she was the healthiest cat I've ever known! But cat's live longer lives and have fewer health issues when they are mixed. Rads in general do not live long lives and I can't imagine it is cheap to make sure you can afford all their check-ups, medicines, supplements, and top quality food. Especially these days when so many toys/foods are questionable and to buy top quality stuff is NOT cheap. So I have lots of questions, mostly about financial- but I think this is especially important for people to know because they might think having a rat (which they shouldn't have just one) or a few rats is cheap, but you never know what their health is going to be like and they already don't live long. The saddest part is thinking that some people just don't care and they are replaceable (just buying animals for their kids with zero knowledge and not caring) which we all know _absolutely_ happens, unfortunately. But there need to be more voices out there sharing these kinds of cold hard facts! I don't even plan on getting any rats..I just care about all living things and know ANY pet should come after tons of research and be given the best life possible- and if you can't then you shouldn't even get an animal. Guess of course it is a resque situation and they had no other choice and are doing the best they can to make sure that animal gets the home it needs. Obviously something is better than nothing- but when it's an intentional purchase- WHOLE different scenerio-!! Okay- I hope you see this post and I hope you can make this video! Take you're time because I know it's a lot and you might want to look through medical records and all that! But I think you could really do a great job educating others on that! Even if you already spoke on this before, due to algorithmic things, you might as well make another! 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

    they are cute, but seeing them all together i have to say i don't like in what direction rat breeding is going. I want them to be healthy, strong and long lived. Not a lot of coat and funny looking variations. (it's not yet the case but it feels we are going to have a overbred pug situation in the future)

    • @basil-soup
      @basil-soup Рік тому +1

      So far, rats aren't being bred too badly. Sure, we have hairless rats who need extra temperature care, but it's nothing like German shepherd's having hip dysplasia, or siamese cats suffering from heart issues. Most ethical breeders *will* test rat lineages to see if the babies are healthy and happy and friendly. If they aren't, they'll shut down that line.

    • @scrubjay93
      @scrubjay93 Рік тому +1

      One reason that breeders do this is to increase the overall popularity of rats with pet owners - someone who would never buy a plain "pink-eyed white" rat might get into rats when they find out they can get a Siamese or Russian Blue rat or one with curly hair or no hair at all. One really wishes to breed rats for longevity, but the fact is, they must breed their animals BEFORE they get old in order to have a healthy litter, so you can't wait to see if they live to three years to breed for longer-lived, healthier animals. None of the rat mutations being bred for actually cause them to be unhealthy or deformed in any way that would reduce their lifespan or I would be in total agreement. I hope this helps - I totally understand where you are coming from, but rats are completely different from dogs in this way. Almost all the rat breeders I met over the years also helped with rat rescues and would never ever breed for looks OVER health. It's just that it is nearly impossible to breed for longevity since the health problems come AFTER the age when a rat would be safely bred.

      One of my favorite ways was to let them loose in a bedroom where I could just sit and read on the floor and have lots of tiny sunflower seeds to give them as treats when they came to me. I also had great luck using a basket to get them in and out of the cage instead of using my hands, which often spooks unsocialized rats. Be sure they have lots of hiding places in the cage - cardboard boxes, fleece blankies and such, which gives them confidence because they know they can hide if they need to. See my channel for videos of my rats going into the basket - if you give them treats when they come out AND when you put them back to their cage, they learn very quick.

    I don't really understand how an ethical animal breeder can work. For me ethical animal breeder sounds like an oxymoron.
