We waited a few days and drove it a second time when the weather was clear. My new bride was a bit nervous because I was driving well beyond the speed limit and there were very few guardrails back then.

I think he did meant to do that. He also says that this would kill him eventually. So i assume he did that on purpose. He knows what his car is capable of and with so many modifications on that car. He is knowing what he is doing.
