I only discovered your channel a few weeks ago, and I always enjoy your videos - thank you for taking the time to make them. I really appreciate your comparisons of different pressings (and as someone who loves cats, it’s always nice to see yours make an appearance 😊)
I was sad to read in the comments of one of your videos that you had stopped making videos for a while - it’s really nice to see you’re posting regularly again. I hope you have a blessed day ❤️🙏

Music publishing didn’t allow for 14 song albums in the USA at that time, that was why all of the British albums were split up, and not just The Beatles.

With perhaps the exception of the 2014 Beatles in mono boxset, I'm not a fan of boxsets. They take up a lot of space. I'd rather just put my records on the shelf.
I opted to buy them individually. I actually really enjoy 'the beatles story.' I'll admit that it is not essential and purely a novelty record.
Ever since I purchased the capitol CDs (both the 2004 and 2014 boxset) I really wanted a vinyl counterpart. I got really excited when I heard the news of this release.
I look forward to the likely release of the 1965 albums. US Rubber soul is brilliant in my opinion

as a massive Beatles collector myself, i stopped pre ordering stuff a while ago. They Claim that alot of stuff its limited and they just keep pressing them. When it comes to this set I'm on the fence. I'll probably wait and see what the price does. The lennon set less than two weeks after its release was available for half of its price.

I'll probably buy the '64 Capitol mono albums individually at $30 a piece. Just for the negligible Beatles Story and the flimsy cardboard box is $120. Brian, your Captain America T-shirt is quite cool!

Second generation American fan here. The Beatles’ Story was one of my first albums so I have a very happy nostalgic feeling about it. Before I knew anything about them or had all the music it was great hearing them talk and the snatches of songs. I’ve always loved the George Martin instrumentals on AHDN so I don’t mind that album. Even though I do mostly listen to the UK versions these days, my old US albums could use an upgrade so I’ll be getting the box. I am a sucker for the box sets even though I know it would be cheaper to buy them individually. Although you can get the box now for about $250. Hopefully they’ll get back to the album series next year.

It’s been two whole years for RubberSoulSuperDeluxeGilesRemixedBox and it’s obvious that Apple/Universal/Calderstone doesn’t care about a fan like me but you only have to look to the RollingStones color mono box to see the right way to do things!

Ultimately I’m excited about this set but I’m right there with you. I can see a premium for the box and complete set but 120 for that is just a bit silly
Sound aside, this set seems fun and a cool celebration of the history of the Beatles but it’s just not worth the price

I was playing the two -and only- original mono releases I own from 1964, and they sound quite good. I'm skeptical, but hoping the new releases sound just as good, if not better. Looking forward to receiving mine in November. Yes, 'The Beatles Story' is a dud I can live without, too. Thanks for posting this!

“The Beatles Story” wasn’t exactly a mere cash grab in 1964 and was even a compelling release during a time in which the Internet, home video, or TV channels dedicated to music videos or documentaries did not yet exist. A documentary album recounting the origins of The Beatles and their overall narrative and personalities up to that point would have provided one of the only ways to experience such a documentary/story about The Beatles with audio and the members’ voices at any time of one’s choosing and would certainly have been more entertaining than a book (which would have been invariably short and rushed) on the subject. Prior to the late 1980s, audio narrative records or cassettes recounting the events of films or novels and so on weren’t uncommon. I agree that in 2024, however, there is no reason to dish out $30+ on a vinyl reissue of “The Beatles’ Story” and play it on an audiophile modern turntable as opposed to streaming or watching The Beatles Anthology or any number of documentaries on the group (including a UA-cam video containing the album).

  • @mjanovec

It’s a bit of a misconception that the Beatles hated the Capitol albums. Initially, they were indifferent to them. Brian still had to okay the albums before Capitol released them. It was only in the later part of 1965 that the Beatles started showing some dissatisfaction. They initially insisted on retaining the same artwork as the UK albums… which they did for Rubber Soul and Revolver. Then, when they renewed their contract in 1966, they required that the US albums also stick with the same track listings as the UK albums. Again, Capitol complied.
The mono US albums have significantly less tweaking to their sound than the stereo albums had. If you do A-B comparisons between the 2004-2006 Capitol CDs (using the US tapes) and the 2009 Beatles in Mono set (using the UK tapes), there really isn’t a huge difference other than the big echo added to “I Feel Fine” and “She’s A Woman.” In general, the US tracks have a little more reverb and compression, but I doubt the average fan would take notice. Indeed, when I did an A-B comparison the other night, I found myself giving a slight preference to some of the Capitol tracks. They were a little more punchy and vibrant. Granted, the sound of those Capitol CDs is somewhat better than the original LPs, but I’m optimistic that they can make these new LPs sound really good.
One more note… as much as I love the UK singles and albums to the point I consider them definitive, I think the US albums were probably more fun. The US albums included the hit singles, so fans didn’t have to buy the singles. And while the US albums generally had 2-3 less tracks on them, that meant US fans were getting three albums a year instead two. Imagine the joy of having a new Beatles album every four months! It had to be an amazing time to be a fan. I can see why so many are nostalgic for these albums 60 years later.

Me too, Brian, I was looking forward to *Rubber Soul SDL* - - already delayed a year by Red/Blue revamp. In UK, these Capitol reissues have zero nostalgia value & do not correlate to UK Beatles experience. I don't know if Apple will dream up something to plug the 2024 gap for UK/Europe - - but even if they do, I won't spring for that either.
It starts to look like a crooked marketing ploy to delay Rubber Soul for 2 years, redirecting purchases to lesser releases. I wish Apple would stop giving me Reasons To Be Cynical, Parts I, II & III.

As someone who already has a nice collection of hi-fi Beatles albums myself, I’m really excited to own these! Like you, I’ve also got early pressings of the Capitol albums, but most of em are pretty beat up.
I can see myself buying 3 or 4 of these individually, since I don’t really want to pay an extra $150 just for the Beatles Story.
Even though I wasn’t around for their original releases, I still feel a strange sense of American nostalgia for these records. I even like the weird masters with the added reverb. I think one of the worst problems of the originals is the poor quality of vinyl, so I’m really excited to have the mono mixes pressed on high quality vinyl for the first time!

It might be fair to say that "The Beatles Story" was a response to VJ's cash-grab, "Hear The Beatles Tell All". Arguably the VJ album might be a better prospect than the official one. At least there's a lot more talking from the group itself. There's also a light drum and percussion score, played by Brian Wilson's favourite drummer, Hal Blaine.
In fact the thing is a full-on Dunhill Records production, edited and scored by Lou Adler.
I only have the LP, because there was a rash of counterfeit VJ albums in 1981. Proper record shops in London were awash with this album and "Introducing The Beatles" (the second version). The sleeves were even constructed in the 1964 manner with slicks, pasted on card. I only realised they were not official from later reading articles, and Gareth L. Pawlowski's "How They Became The Beatles, 1960 - 1964".
The captions on the front of the sleeve are unintentionally hilarious, the best being, "George Talks About The Paddy Boyd".
The "new" copy cost me £1.99 ($3.00 at the time?). It's about all it's worth.
A while later I bought a second-hand, mid-1970's "The Beatles Story", with Apple labels in mint condition, not old, not sixties-authentic, but a nice reminder of when all the US catalogue, "A Hard Day's Night" aside, was on Apple. I'm sure it cost me all of £3.00, again about all it's worth.
Buying vinyl these days seems like a lesson in masochism, the bigger the price hike, the better it must be. It pained me to hear you describe and compare the differing degrees of end-of-side distortion on the LPs in the "Let It Be" super-deluxe set. This is premium product, not some knock-off release, sneaked out without permission from a New Jersey warehouse in 1964 or 1973.

The beautiful cover art of The Beatles Story is not enough to sell the set, however those "victims" of Beatlemania interviews are priceless and absolutely do convey how the kids of 1964 got swept up under the spell of the Mop Tops. I am just old enough (67) to remember The Beatles coming to the US and playing the Ed Sullivan Show in February of 1964. These records were all we were aware of at that time. I still have all mine and I never play them. In the late 80's or 90's Capital released the original UK albums with the original sleeves in the US. I bought the first five of their albums, Please Please Me thru Help in Mono. Ok, I actually already had an original UK Mono copy of "Beatles For Sale". All of the other early represses I got at that time sounded sonically like the original Beatles For Sale album. What a relief. So with all of this hoopla around this box set I was compelled to dig into the back of my LP collection and listen for the first time in more that 30 years, to those old Mono records. The UK records sound clean and bright while the old US pressings sound muddy and in some cases to damn much reverb. I Feel Fine and Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby on Beatles 65 are particularly bad in the reverb department. The only track that was good to hear again was "And I Love Her" from the Mono version of "Something New" which doesn't have Paul McCartney's voice double tracked. I much prefer it that way. But that's the only thing I can find. So in short, YES this is a cash grab and as long as all you apologist for these blood suckers keep buying all the crap they put out, guess what!?.......They will just keep putting this nonsense out! So..... in the humble opinion of an American who had the pleasure of living through the first coming of The Beatles, these US issues deserve to die! Get decent pressings of the UK issues, Past Masters for the singles and be done with It.

They need to release all these albums individually, including The Beatles Story, for those who are complete Beatles geeks. Don't make the consumer buy the most expensive box set. No. At worst, the tapes sent to the U.S. would have been third generation. The truth is, Capitol certainly could have obtained better masters from the U.K., but they did not want ANY questioning of their plans to alter the sound or song order on the albums, plus they were very impatient. Capitol would use a mono 7" single version of a song to pad out otherwise none existent albums. That mono version would be crudely re-channeled to fake stereo for lp use. Beatles For Sale, the 4th official Beatles album, became the fodder for 2 shorter U.S. albums, often only 11 songs, not 14.. Don't blame the U.K. arm of the label for the poor audio that was fed to the American public.

      @BrianBringelson  4 дні тому

where are you getting your info on Capitol receiving 1st or 2nd generation master tapes? because what I have read/heard is that they are 3rd gen at best. EMI had a strict policy of not allowing 1st gen master tapes out of the building let alone the country.

@@BrianBringelson Nobody said anything about first generation, that would have been crazy. If you study some of the videos, many of them, by the great dude that calls his channel Parlogram, you will see evidence that EMI pretty much always sent 2nd generation tapes, meaning copied from the master, to any affiliated label. The U.S. tapes may have started out one generation later than that, though I can't see why. It was actually Dave Dexter that caused them to drop even one more generation when he added the reverb and equalized the volume level of all the disparate tapes that made up the US albums under his control. Meet The Beatles has tapes from no less than 4 sources, all needing to be "dexterized" in his opinion. Unlike the Canadian "Beatlemania With The Beatles" that was at least copied directly from a pristine UK mono pressing of With The Beatles. The Canadian lp also has all 14 songs!
