    Just too sad for each individual in nature's wild animal kingdom. Just a baby and almost grown. Only savings grace if any, is that unlike hawks who take forever to pluck their prey leading to a very long, painful ordeal, this wasn't as long even though this poor baby suffered.

    I don't think people realize how territorial and aggressive owls are. I used to work at a wildlife rehabilitation center. As soon as owls fledge, they become territorial little freaks of nature that can and will RUN you down to attack your legs.

    After seeing about 300 videos similar to this, I wonder has anyone done research into whether the night observation lights and camera movements/noises attract predators to these nests? It's almost as if you've put a spotlight on them in the center of an otherwise dark forest and in neon lights have a sign that says "FREE FOOD HERE". I bet the nearby nests, the ones without lights and cams pointing them out to the entire potential predator universe, have much higher success rates.

      Interesting point, though an owl has night vision anyway, I doubt an IR light or any other unusual activity will attract secretive birds to said nest, though Im not sure they help the situation either. Definitely worth further study ✌🏻

      @theosnepenthes8751 Рік тому +8

      @@ArleneBeechHomebird Hi Arlene, Perhaps...unless there are predators that sense Infra Red. I am positive, however, that the cameras are making sounds not audible to the human ear that mammals and birds can readily hear. Hopefully humans are not making these nests targets for predators, but if a predator notices whenever there are certain lights/sounds food is around (animals can be very clever and adapt to new stimuli) observation nests and the equipment involved may attract more predation than normal. Thanks for the kind response.

      @@cwg73160 You think I missed the context? I'm talking about the sleeping behavior and more. I was thinking about the fact that it was laying its head down like that. Maybe that's normal for an osprey of that age (it is, after all, still pretty young), but I myself have never seen that behavior in a bird that is healthy and as far developed as that one was (usually they can sleep with their head up, perhaps tucked under a wing, like an adult bird). Then after that, it sure didn't have much ability to fight. Young birds of prey are usually quite powerful when defending themselves, even if badly wounded. It never had a chance of course, but I expected it to fight harder and it barely even moved. No wing-flapping, nothing.

      It all comes down to the structure of the owls’ flight feathers. There is set of little spines/ribs along the outer edge of the feathers that softens the air before actually meeting the body of feathers, providing a very stealthy glide and wing beat. It became necessary due to their main prey (rodents and lagamorphs) having excellent hearing. It just happens that it’s an excellent adaptation for hunting everything else as well.

      @Gary Ramirez. I am very well into and acquainted with Falconers in Florida and in New York & it's quite the opposite actually. Ghos specialize in hunting from behind on silent feathers & usually at night. Diurnal Raptirs that falconer use like Red Tailed Hawks and Goshawks are hunted with in the daytime, when the hawk has the advantage. & if the hawk/ falconer are seasoned & have been doing it for some time , it is the hawk that can give the gho an extremely hard time as These hawks are also fighters and can see the owl. I've seen proof of incidents where ghos were killed. I have photo proof of a young female Red Tailed Hawk that killed an adult female Gho. All talons from both of the owls- skull and face- crushing the owls skull bone structure causing hemmorage & a quick death. Both of each of the Hawks longest talons, the halux claws were each stuck deeply into both of the owls eyes. Excellent kill & very quick. The owl didn't even have a chance. I will gladly share the image.

      @nickys34 The point was primarily about animals not people. I don't think owls eat plant life although they seem to eat any animal they can kill. Ospreys only eat fish. I've been told that eating rice and beans gives a complete protein that is essentially the same as any meat protein; both groups need additional plant foods to provide necessary vitamins and minerals. Eating nothing but meat doesn't provide everything you need. Eat Right for Your Type by D'Adamo discusses why some people should be vegetarians and some should not.

It is soooo sad what the owl has done to this family, I guess with mother nature the owl may have a family of his own to care for. I still don't like it though. 😪😪😪😪❤️❤️❤️🌺🌺

    I have more questions. First, it's amazing though it's also sad and your camera work is over. I wonder if this was the second chick then why he isn't there in the night? He should be there laying right beside the last remaining chick. The poor little thing didn't put up any fight at all and he was dead in seconds. Though I don't know how or why. You see the lion takes time to choke out a wildebeest or a zebra. The Hyena and wild dogs start to rip them apart and start eating them while still alive and die in the process. This owl just flew in on it no choking no ripping apart a little shaking head as the nerve was still working and it was over. Oh, well there's always next year. BTW I used to go fishing by Bellwood Lake in the 80s and even enter a few times for the pike fishing and once a perch fishing derby. I love to go there to catch catfish and carp. It's a nice man-made deep lake with hydroelectricity generated there. Kind of a starting point for the Grand River. Empties into Lake Erie just South of Dunville. By hunting we went to the Luther mars area. In the summer by the Elora gorge and jumping from the cliffs but can't do it no more and you get a big fine if they catch you. Few Hollywood movies were filmed there too. 1 famous horror too (I forgot the name)
