  • Nothing serious, Mom was just having one of those days. Also, he can be a handful...
Luca has now mastered the tricky gate and was a little less shy today, getting somewhat closer to take a good look/sniff at me.

It's hard to see what provoked the outburst but I think it's possible that Milo is heavy enough now that if he's not careful he could easily knock his poor Mom off the railing. He'd never hear the end of it, poor guy...

Sadly, when she makes them go on their way, to make their own territory... (They're used to people.)
They will go into neighborhoods and become what fish and game calls 'nuisance bears'. Hopefully, they will be tranquilized and brought deep into the forest, where they will hopefully stay and live a long life. Sadly though, many nuisance bears are euthanized because they find their way back to civilization (they know this because they tag them, when they're first caught)... Because they cannot be rehabilitated.

The berries on the bush outside? Fine. But once they found the bird feeder? It should have come down immediately and never been filled again.
I used to live there and this is a huge problem. I'm sure it's incredibly endearing and delightful for him but he is setting them up for failure.
The first time I had bears tear apart my trash I never set another trash bag out again until the morning of trash pickup. The mom and her cubs tore apart my trash and scattered it across the entire yard. They were a particularly fond of pizza crust and yogurt containers. And while that was great to watch I knew it was incredibly unhealthy but there was nothing I could do at the time- my newborn baby was inside the house with me. After they left I went out and picked it all up and never set the trash out again because I knew that I would be setting them up to fail if I ever let them consider my house a feeding source.
If he still wants to have a bird feeder he should have a pulley system VERY high up in a tree. That's really the only way to do it once you've got bears frequenting your property. Or hanging on an upstairs windowsill. Personally, I wouldn't even put a feeder out for months after I'd seen bears eat out of it. Especially cubs, because they're JUST learning where to find food, and now they associate humans and front porches as potential feeding grounds and aren't going to be frightened by a human being sitting there!
      It's reckless.

These are not pets they are powerful animals. He's doing what they call up north by me baiting them. Normally those bears keep a safe distance from people. Black bears are timid and easily scared away. They tend to only attack in areas they feel comfortable in. We have hundreds of them up by me. We don't teach them to approach people! That would be wildly irresponsible.

Living in bear country means living on their territory and never attempt to tame them. Black bears avoid man and are the most placid of all species of bears. . Patrick neighbours are surrounded by black bears too. People who put themselves and bears in danger do not respect the rules resulting of mauling sometimes and the bear is euthanized. I’ve seen this process play out many times over the years with out of towners that move here. They enjoy showing their bear videos to people because it makes them feel special but it’s very easy to attract bears to your porch in WNC by simply putting out a bird feeder.
He is signing these bears death warrants but he doesn’t care because it’s really all about him. These type of people never listen to anyone. It takes a good fright from a bear for them to finally get the message and I hope for him that a good fright is all he gets.

Bears are magnificent beasts and they're fun to watch at a distance. However, I'm always concerned for human safety because when you find yourself crossing paths with a bear while out on the trail or they come sniffing around your tent at night, I always choose to exercise the best deterrents available for the situation in order to always reinforce that when they see a human they better leave and go the other way. Teach them to have a healthy fear of humans. It's for their own good and ours as well. In the past 20 years or so I recall two instances of where two older women (unknown to each other and different locations) were in the habit of leaving scraps on their porches for the bears and then they'd watch from a window. Both wound up getting killed by bears.

    Thanks for sharing these beauties!
I absolutely love mama too, she's so nonchalant 😅
How long has she been your friend?

So cute. Finally, the one cub got over the railing and it never seems to be shy of you at all.

However I noticed he only came so far, clever boy. Btw love the kind couple who allow them to just enjoy their lovely verandah and then off they go.

It still intrigues me how bird seeds are on Mom's shopping list. I suppose they are more nutritious per ounce than other forage. What a joy to watch your furry neighbors visit. Thank you.

Gave them the choice between the two. The sunflowers won with all of them. They only eat the pnuts when there’s nothing else.

Birdseed is a delicacy for bears, and it’s packed with much needed calories. Typically 1lb of birdseed can contain as much as 2500-3800 calories.

@@treydogg77 Makes sense. Someone proposed it might be sunflower seeds, which perhaps Simone got a taste for watching baseball games ;-)

How often you you have to repaint / fix that porch rail? When it was built, I doubt the builders planned on it being used as a Black Bear jungle gym.
Oh, and how do you resist giving the cubs a scratch behind the ears when they come up to you like that? I know it would be hard for me.
