    I'm currently cleaning up my scores for my prescreening recordings this week, and found this incredibly encouraging! Though I'm terribly nervous, I'm hoping I'll be able to land an audition. I'm incredibly eager to absorb whatever knowledge and advice available to me, regardless of where I end up going. Thanks for this!

    I was in band playing trumpet for seven years and fell in love with music. I wrote many arrangements for marching and jazz band, and even took music theory and scored a perfect 5 on the exam. I started studying more and have decided that composition is definitely my focus. Both Eric Whitacre and John Mackey went to the Juilliard school and they have inspired me. I got to see Whitacre conduct a choir in London and wanted to talk to him so badly but sadly wasn't able to. I'm worried about auditioning thouggh because I've never composed a song. I've arranged some and practiced many exercises but have not written an original song. I met a man in my tiny hometown of Cordele, GA that attended this school a while back and he's going to help me study. I plan on going to a college here for 2 years and studying in the meantime and apply next year.
    I want to compose mainly for wind ensemble, but I also want to be involved in the American music industry because today it is just terrible. I want to contribute to society and make more people respect music for what it really is- art. I want to start like a cultural movement, revolution, etc.

    I really want to go into the composition major of of Juilliard, but I'm from a non-music high school, but I'm pretty familiar with music, music theory, and music composition that I learned from a class in middle school. I'm wondering if that could get me anywhere in Juilliard because I do play instruments, but my top priority is the composition major.

      It doesn't matter what kind of high school you go to, or even if you're home schooled.
      Compose pieces and try to get them recorded by live musicians. (through another high school, an arts school, or local college music program....however you can.)
      They will not judge you in any way for what school you went to.

    I tried to play around with classical composition before but I haven't been doing anything with it lately cuz of school. But one thing I would like to learn more about is percussion, and I think that would help out a lot. But I'm not sure how I should go about learning it on my own as far as what type of books I should look into.

    This is very informative and gives me a lot of hope. I'm not applying to Juilliard, but I figure that in all top music schools the principle is the same, that the teachers value potential over raw skill. I was afraid that one has to be a pro to get into a school like Juilliard, but apparently this is not the case

    TVK I realy like your videos. Im from mexico, Im studying violin, my teacher says I have good hands for the viola, good violists here are not very common and lately I started to like the viola, I wanted to ask you: is it worth to learn the viola instead of the violin? do you recomend me to change? all my friends say that they dont like the idea of me playing the viola because they think it is like throwing all my violin work to the trash, but I wanted to know the opinion of someone that know viola well.

    • @ThatViolaKid
      @ThatViolaKid  9 років тому +2

      +Don Juanito By Strausss The viola is a great instrument! Your violin playing will actually serve you well if you decide to switch! On top of that, if you work hard, you could possibly find a good job as a violist because good violists are indeed rare! I say give it a try! If you don't like it, you can always stick with the violin! What do you have to lose?

    Thanks for this vid. I’m planning on applying. Question: is it worth mentioning that I have innately have very high form of perfect pitch, relative pitch, memorization and can instantly recreate music I hear by ear and in any transposed key? I realize there’s stigma around these innate abilities due to ignorance but they are tools that gets me way ahead and compose very fast and be prolific. But I don’t want to come off like I’m boasting of things that aren’t necessary-like how these abilities are usually received by trained musicians.

    • @ThatViolaKid
      @ThatViolaKid  2 роки тому

      I wouldn't really go into that unless they ask. I don't want to come across as offensive when I say this, so please take this with a grain of salt. To musicians, saying that you have perfect pitch is something that would make us say "so what?." In the grand scheme of things, it isn't gonna put you over the edge or anything like that :)

    • @kottakjji7816
      @kottakjji7816 2 роки тому

      @@ThatViolaKid what about relative pitch and other things I mentioned? Perfect pitch is only small part of it that deals with identifying notes.

    Hi, I really want to get into juilliard but i dont think i have the level even if i work hours in a day. Can i really get accepted ? And also which piece do you recommend me to play ? (Violin here:) )

    • @ThatViolaKid
      @ThatViolaKid  9 років тому

      +Darcy Wan Anyone can be accepted, Darcy! However, if you aren't sure you're at the right level, try going to another undergraduate school so you can hone your skills, and then audition for graduate school (that's what I did). Check out my "Didn't get into Juilliard" video for more info!!
      Also, consult your teacher on what music you should prepare. If you go online and view the repertoire requirements, that will give you an idea on the parameters! This is a good idea, because sometimes school don't want to hear you play certain pieces hehe :)
