Hi all, please note that bicycles are not allowed to be riding on some of the trails closer to the city. If you're going to ride Yarra Trails I recommend you start at Chandler Highway and head away from the city - loads of awesome trails out that way
Love and hate the video. Love because you have shown just how great the YST are and that’s why I hate it you have told all lol . Word of warning it’s a two way single track open to walkers , riders and dogs. Great video .
Thanks Stephen Verdon - yup I had to give way to many pooches, running groups and walkers. If you want an uninterrupted ride peeps you’re more likely to get it heading east from the Chandler hwy.
I agree I just offed (could be a new word ) of half a dozen sites that had heaps more veiws so hang in there hopefully will turn around . Thank you, Gary.
Hey mate! That was so fast. I went looking for these trails today. Got onto the one from flying fox sanctuary to chandler hwy bridge but then lost the track. The next I saw any single-track was at Yarra Flats. Do you have a GPX trace or Strava recording you can share?
Only started riding again a few weeks ago after a few years out with a lower back injury and have ridden the Yarra trail around Heidelberg, I don't live far from there, but planning to checkout the trail around studley park. How much bike traffic is there around that area cos I just want to take it easy and not rush
Teckha Son not too much, especially if you ride east of the Chandler highway. You could also check out Plenty Gorge. Not as many people out there and if you ride near the water tank the trails are pretty chill.
Hi mate, I'm a beginner looking to improve as an XC rider. Would much of this singletrack be manageable for me? Looks awesome, but I can already see a lot is out of my depth. Is it normal to ride a trial like this a little more slowly? Or is it still a little risky or bad etiquette? Great vid. Cheers
Yes that’d be great. There are all the trails in the high country which are pretty awesome. Also Derby and Maydena in Tas that isn’t that far away that to me are world class
Hi Long and Winding. Really enjoy your videos. Is there a trail around Melbourne that'd you recommend for beginners? (i.e. not too technical, but with scope to practice and learn)
liron nehmadi sure can. Plenty Gorge is the place to go. Check my other video on that. You’ll need Trailforks or a guide because it can be hard to know where to go
Mate as a trail runner, I run this all the time, what happens when we coincide? I love that we both love the outdoors, and in happy to share the path when we can, but there really is no room for error here. Do you have any thoughts on this?
Hi Nicholas, I can’t speak for the mtb community but to me a collision would be pretty unlikely. When I’m riding these trails I’m hyper aware of what’s coming up on the trail and my only advice to folks who share the trail is to be equally as aware. Runners have the advantage of potentially being able to hear us coming so I wouldn’t wear headphones if I was running on the trail. At the end of the day if you choose to run on the trail you know the risks.
@@longandwinding Hi there! Thanks for replying. I checked the other day, and there's actually two signs, one near the bridge, and one at studley park that say "no bicycles", and "walkers only" - it seems that the path is specifically not intended for mountain bike riders - so I don't think I really follow that "I know the risks" if I choose to run the trail? I don't run with headphones on. It seems that if a collision did happen, that this isn't exactly a risk that I should anticipate, right? Given the signage about no bicycles on that section of the track (past the bridge it's totally fine though, tons of room to move). I'd love to work out a way for both folks to share the trail, maybe we can apply for funding to expand the path - it is so beautiful, and I think we're there for the same reasons. At the end of the day I would just hate to have caused some poor mountain biker to hurt themselves because they are riding on the walking track.
@@NicholasTierney I have to agree with you on that Nicholas. As a keen mountain biker for nearly 30 years and having ridden all of those trails there 100's of times long before any signage. "No Bicycles" means exactly that! I was disappointed when the no bikes signs appeared but had to accept it. You will be fined by the ranger if you are caught riding on those trails. Apart from the fine it gives all riders a bad name if a few mess it up for everyone. Places like Lysterfield and many more exist for a good reason, you can ride plenty of trails out there and not have to think about, dogs, walkers and runners appearing on the next corner, they are dedicated trails just for riders. As much as I love the proximity of the Yarra Trails and the scenery, best to stick to the rules for the benefit of all.
@@MrCDR1 Thanks, Craig! I appreciate your response, it's great to see that there are mountain bikers out there who care about this. Looking back on @Long and Winding 's response, it is actually pretty disappointing to see that they view runners, running on a trail not intended for bicycles to be "knowing the risks" of bicycles coming through. I would like to give Long and Winding the benefit of the doubt, perhaps they just don't know that bicycles aren't allowed. But it's hard to imagine that, since they have to step over barriers to get onto a few of these trails.
Hi there! I’m wanting to ride these trails maybe tomorrow.. but worried that the walkers will get angry (since it’s not technically allowed for riders..) Is this an issue? Thanks! Lana :)
If you start at Guide Dogs Victoria and head away from the city you should be fine. The only problem I’ve ever had with walkers is on the inner trails along the river (where I start in this video).
There's no margin for error at the Yarra River trail at the beginning of the trail. It's like 20m fall if you go off the trail. It's definitely reserved for the pros

@@longandwinding Yeah, dude- that's a walking track. If you're wondering where the downvote came from...
Wow, I used to ride these tracks years ago when mtbing was starting to take off, thanks for the memorys 🙂
With Fat Tyre Flyers?
@@longandwinding Yes! I was in the club and racing every weekend I could 🤩
@@JEMMTB1 ah so good. They were the days. I was riding trials at that stage but remember all the FTF crew.
How do you only have 38 subscribers? Truly! The content you are producing is on par with many youtubers 100x your size. Top job!
Thanks Lachlan! I've only just started out so we'll see how things go. Lots more content to come soon.

awesome! I used to ride these trails with FTF, will have to check them out again
Nice, old school!
2.55 made my stomach turn. Thought you were going in the drink
Damn great footage and track...
I used to ride these in the early 90's on a rigid purple GT Backwoods. Fond memories.
Ah classic stuff. Back in the Fat Tyre Flyer days!
Was the Fat Tyre Flyers vs the Bayside Rough Riders back then.

It's a bit of a maze. Check my Strava link in the desc. I also cover some other trails in this vid: ua-cam.com/video/3CbPgMB5Njs/v-deo.html
Great video! Footage is super smooth. Are you using a gimbal? Or if not, how did you keep it so smooth?
bencebon thanks! I used a Feiyu WG2 gimbal with a stuntman harness. Seems to be a good combo! GoPro harnesses are not sturdy enough

It’s actually the perfect spot for beginners. It’s pretty flat on the whole. Start at guide dogs and head out of town
Your fork gives me insane ocd these trails looks sick though definitly going this week
Really fun! And so close to the city
Hey just wondering exact location where u started. I started after narrow bridge but maaan it was narrow and too many walkers.
i'm pretty upset theres no bike parks in victoria like whistler but hey its all we got.

Thanks! Check out my beginner trails at Lysterfield and recent You Yangs video. Both of these locations have a great beginner trail network
@@longandwinding Thanks, I'll have a watch and give them a try!
That looks awesome love the vids ! Silly question but wheres the track to return back? I wanna do this on my gravel bike runs 43mm tyres
Thanks! We usually just do an out and back ride
Forgive me but with the "back" part, does that mean the track loops back to the CBD ?
I'm a newbie, be kind lol
Jay Dee 86 GTS nah we just ride the same trail back. You can ride it all the way back to near where ikea is
Can you get more technical mtb trails than that in Melbourne?
liron nehmadi sure can. Plenty Gorge is the place to go. Check my other video on that. You’ll need Trailforks or a guide because it can be hard to know where to go

Start at Chandler Highway and head out of the city and you'll be fine 👍🏻
Man, this is so bomb!! I’m interested in getting into mountain biking. Do you guys do group rides, too? Be god to learn off of experienced riders.
Thanks George. I've done one group ride but plan to do another after the virus. Stay tuned!

where is the head entrance of this trail ?
Roger Oz the most inner-city point of the trail system that I know of is here:

is it better to ride from east to west or the way in your video?
It’s an out and back trial so chances are you’ll be riding both directions anyway. I don’t have any strong preference either way...
Long and Winding just finish riding in Yarra Trail
do you ride a hardtail or duel suspension mate????
It's a full suspension. Cannondale Scalpel Si
looks like a walking track to me
I think you might be right
Is your bike a lefty
Tyler 27 sure is. There is a review of it on my channel

Aahhh looked at other comments and found my answer.
can we have a ride together?
Sorry I just saw this comment. I'm thinking of organising some Long and Winding group rides at some point if people are interested
