  • Hello all! in this episode we dive into the 12 volt conversion on the M. I don't go into as much detail on this project as I did on the John Deere A, but it is virtually the same conversion and wiring. Also, this is my 100TH EPISODE! I cannot thank you all enough for watching and supporting me through the years - if it weren't for the people I am continually connecting with, I wouldn't be making these videos! I hope you all are learning as much as I have been. Stay tuned for the giveaway update, and for future episodes! As always, any questions, comments or concerns - feel free to ask!

    I found your channel just in time. I am working on a 1955 Farmall 400 which was my father in laws farm tractor. Your videos provide me with a wealth of information. Thanks and keep them coming. Grats on your 100th.

      Thanks for finding me, and commenting! The 400 and M are real similar (as you probably know). The 400 is an updated version, torque amplifier, live PTO & hydraulics, larger displacement, etc... I'm glad I can be of some help - if you have any questions just ask! Yesterday's Tractors also has a bunch of great folks in the forums as well!

    Congrats on 100th! I have just recently found your channel and enjoy it. The oil pressure switch is an excellent idea. I have a Case D, MM R, and MM Z that I will incorporate into conversion.

      Thank you! Glad you enjoy the videos, and the oil pressure switch is a cheap method and I like it much better than a light bulb wired into the system.

    @Jeff Colt The ignition system that is on it is a magneto. I actually prefer them over distributor ignitions. Can squeeze out a couple more horsepower out of a distributor, usually, but not enough for a noticeable difference.

    So the coil in the mag won't be hurt by the 12 volts? I ask because I need to redo my 46 H better than it is now.

    • @KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch
      @KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch  3 роки тому

      No, it won't. The magneto is a standalone system. You do NOT wire the charging system into the magneto, nor do you wire the battery into it. Magneto's create their own current - a distributor ignition requires 12v power from an outside source (battery). This is where you must be careful with a 12v conversion. If you run a 6v coil with a 12v charging/battery system you will need a ballast resistor for the coil.

    My congratulations to you also. You must be keeping your source of alternators both busy and rich.
    Couple questions:
    1). Without cutting an adjustment slot in the top alternator bracket,how will you have any adjustment as the belt stretches with use?
    2). Maybe you explained it before and I missed it,but what's the purpose of installing an oil pressure switch in the alternator/ammmeter line? Is this a standard installation practice?

    • @KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch
      @KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch  7 років тому +1

      Anthony - thanks for the congrats! As far as the belt stretch/adjustment goes, as I stated above: 1) I figure as the belt wears in, it will allow proper tension in the belt (It was quite a stretch to get it one there). If, by chance, I do need to create an adjustable, I intend on taking a piece of steel similar to what is there, bending it the same, but making it longer. I will then drill two holes in it, and slot the material between the two holes with a cutoff wheel/die grinder. And 2) I installed an oil pressure switch to act as the 'ON-OFF" switch for the exciting circuit of the alternator. Since the system is still magneto ignition, and the magneto runs off of its' own power source and 'kill' switch, You have to either install an on-off toggle switch for the alternator, or run an oil pressure switch to act as your toggle (Oil pressure switches are off without pressure, and on once proper oil pressure is achieved). The switches I installed are activated between 3-7.5 PSI. Plenty good for old tractor application. Hope this clarifies?

    My Son in law has a 47 M and the last owners says it was converted over to 12v and I can see an alternator and 12v battery but his starter keeps fryin for some reason. Any suggestions.. What should i be looking for if this has been converted over to 12v. Thanks and love your videos

      Thanks for the nice comment, glad you enjoy the videos. Have you had the starter rebuilt at all? Steiner's has a great video that talks bout rebuilding IH starters. My guess is you've got some issues internally in the starter. 12 volt alternator, and 12 volt battery are dead giveaways that it has been converted. The starter is likely still 6 volt but will operate just fine on 12 volts for many, many years. Here is a link to Steiner's starter rebuild video (otherwise I would bring it to a local auto electric shop for them to rebuild). ua-cam.com/video/iQ00AG9d42c/v-deo.html

      Would there be any reason I couldn't use the diode and also a light bulb for a charging indicator?

      @KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch  4 роки тому

      @@ripleyj1080 that would be perfectly fine as well. I just prefer not to have the light bulb.

    Congratulations on your 100th video! I just have one question on your top bracket installation. Instead of grinding out a section to clear the altinator fan, could it have been mounted on the back side of the top ear and bolted through?

      Thank you, Martin! Sorry, I just saw this comment... I did actually figure out another configuration which worked better and gave me a little more clearance.

    I didn't see anything about wiring harnesses' do you have any plans on a tutorial on them? Or did I just miss one? Is the alternator you installed considered a one wire alternator?

    • @KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch
      @KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch  7 років тому +1

      You can purchase wiring harnesses online from various suppliers, but I prefer to make my own (I have enough wiring laying around). At 15:55, I have a wiring diagram that is shown that I use. If you would like, I can send it to you. My 1941 Case SC 12 volt conversion is pretty detailed. You can find that link here: ua-cam.com/video/twClxPJPF6o/v-deo.html There is also a video on my H, as well as my John Deere A. All of these tractors the conversions are pretty much identical because they are all running Magneto ignition. I believe your 400 should be distributor, which would be slightly different. This alternator is not a one-wire alternator. On-wire alternators are self-excited (turns on automatically once it reaches a certain RPM).

    Kenny, Congratulations on your 100th episode. Question where did you get the alternator? Also do you have have any belt adjustment the way you set up your alternator? As I have a M that needs conversation.
    Thanks Todd Holmer

      Conversion not conversation ☺

    • @KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch
      @KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch  7 років тому

      Todd, I purchased the alternator from an online source (eBay).. I typically don't like doing electrical products off eBay but for the price, I figured I would give it a shot. I do not currently have belt adjustments as it is a tight fit the way it is. I figure as the belt wears in, it will allow proper tension in the belt (It was quite a stretch to get it one there). If, by chance, I do need to create an adjustable, I intend on taking a piece of steel similar to what is there, bending it the same, but making it longer. I will then drill two holes in it, and slot the material between the two holes with a cutoff wheel/die grinder. That should do the trick!
