    In 1991, I rode a rental bicycle from Holzkirchen down around Tegernsee in a rain storm. Stopped, soaking wet, in Rottach-Egern and had lunch with the best brandy sundae I have ever had. But instead of riding all the way back to Holzkirchen, I got on the train in Gmund am Tegernsee. In my drenched exhaustion, I forgot the bicycle on the train platform in Gmund.

      That sounds like a lot of fun minus the rain and forgetting your bike. We have bikes a few times in Bavaria and thought it was really fun

    I rented a ruderboot (rowboat) for Eur 10/hour at Rottach-Egern and rowed across to the Tegernseer Braustuberl. Easy 20 minute row, but rowing back after a liter of beer, a bit less easy.

      haha. I've been wanting to take a boat rental out on one of these lakes! Love Rottach-Egern btw :D

    Hey guys. You summed it up so well. I went to Tegernsee at least a dozen times when I lived in Munich. It's not just the "allround" Bavarian lake. There are some secrets out here!

      Definitely. We are still trying to discover all the hidden places in Bavaria. :D

    I've been to Tegernsee 4 times now. 3 times in summer and once in winter. And it is my absolute favourite place in the world. Great video! Bayern 💙🤍💙🤍

    I have plans to fly into Munich in late August on my way to Sudtirol, but I have plans to hit some of the activities around Munich for a few days. The Werdenfels Castle ruins that you had on another video is already on my short list in addition to visits to Kloster Andechs and Tegernsee for beer tasting! Prost!

    Brilliant video! Been to the pub up the mountain and of course the brauhaus which is one of the best pubs I’ve ever been to! One thing, if Tegernsee isn’t a “drinking lake”, then give me some examples of them? I would’ve thought Tegernsee was the definition of one given the brewery by the lake so I’m excited to hear about the ones which you consider “drinking lakes” 😅 going back to Munich in June so would be very good to get an idea for a day trip we haven’t been on before!

      We love the beer garden at Tegernsee, but unfortunately, it's not on the lake. It's near it, but you can't enjoy the views while having a beer. I think Ammersee is a great drinking lake in that way. There are several beer gardens right on the lake from in Herrsching!

    You are right, every local has his fav lake. Mine is Staffelsee. It is not quite as touristy as the other lakes. It has little islands and you can rent boats to go to the islands. There is a path round the lake and if the ca. 25 km is too ambitiuous, which for me it normally is, you can take a boat back from half way. You could also combine it with a hike through Murnauer Moos, an absolutely amazing landscape. There is also an interesting algee living on one side of the lake that was only found here and in parts of Russia. The boats have a bit of it in a glas normally. There is a nice beergarden at Uffing, a great Italian in Seehausen, a really cute village, and on the approach to the cracy golf at the Murnau side of the lake, there is a great Burger place. Afterwards you can have a walk into the lovely old town of Murnau, have an ice-cream in one of the Italians in the pedestrian zone or a cake at Café Könner. If you are into art you can go to the castle Museum, where pictures of the famous expressionist local art group Der Blaue Reiter are shown or go to the Münster-Haus, where some of them lived, i.e. Münter and Kadinsky. Have fun exploring.

      Ah we have not been to Staffelsee, but we have passed it a million times on the train. A friend of mine has been camping on the island in the lake, and it looks really nice! We will check out Murnau! We have been, but only very briefly.

      Thanks! I don't think there is an alternative way to get to this particular alm. We haven't made a video about this, but at the southern tip of Tegernsee is the town of Rotach-Egern. They have a cable car that goes to the top of the Wallberg mountain. That might be a good option if you are not interested in trekking. 😎

    Sounds like a great day trip from our favorite city. Any idea if it's worthwhile in the winter? We are coming back to Munich for the Christmas Markets in December.

      There is a really nice gondola with a restaurant and a view that looks beautiful in the winter (assuming it’s snowed) It’s on the southern tip of Tegernsee, in the town of Rottach-Egern. We covered this in our Alpine food tour video linked here: ua-cam.com/video/-2Hy_-rkkag/v-deo.html

    Hey, can y'all talk about some of the things y'all talk with you, maybe that osprey backpack? I'd like to know what y'all like about it, or if it's just the one y'all have. And, maybe if you'd use a different piece of luggage if you were going to purchase one (no brand recommendations needed).

    • @NearFromHome
      @NearFromHome  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi, we have been thinking about doing a packing video for quite some time, as they are popular on YT, and many have requested it! We love Osprey, and have two more of their big 60L backpacks for long distance travel. This one is a day back pack. I can't remember the size, but it is somewhere between 20-30 L. I highly recommend the brand! If you are not married to the brand, I would recommend going to a really nice outdoors store like REI and looking around. They have a nice curated selection, and the workers are usually really knowledgeable and helpful. You really can't go wrong.

    • @TmissinglinkC
      @TmissinglinkC 5 місяців тому

      @@NearFromHome Thanks for the REI idea. The thing I like about the Osprey 55L is that it comes with a daypack, which would be very useful. When, I was but a young man, I used a backpack to travel, but it didn't open like a suitcase which was the only downside. Now, with a child traveling with us, I'm almost doubly sure it will be nice to have 2 hands free with a backpack.

    The next time you make it to the Brauhaus Tegernsee, you need to try the Kartoffel-Gurken-Salat along with a Mass of Tegernseer Spezial..... Tegernseer Spezial is being served at Biergarten Königlicher Hirschgarten at Schänke 2, btw :-)
