- Þingvellir, also known as Thingvellir, is a historic and geologically significant site located in southwestern Iceland. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds great cultural and political importance for the Icelandic people. Here are some key aspects of Þingvellir:
Historical Significance:
Þingvellir is often considered the birthplace of the Alþingi, the Icelandic national parliament. Established in 930 AD, it is one of the oldest parliaments in the world.
The Alþingi initially convened outdoors, where representatives from different regions gathered annually to discuss laws, settle disputes, and make important decisions for the country.
Geological Features:
The site is situated on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. The rift between these plates is visible at Þingvellir, making it an outstanding example of the Earth's geologic processes.
The Silfra Fissure, a prominent crack in the Earth's crust, runs through Þingvellir. It is filled with crystal-clear glacial water and offers a unique opportunity for snorkeling or diving between the tectonic plates.
Natural Beauty:
Þingvellir is surrounded by stunning landscapes, including lava fields, cliffs, and Lake Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland.
The site is rich in flora and fauna, with moss-covered lava fields, birch forests, and a variety of bird species.
Cultural Heritage:
The location holds immense cultural importance for the Icelandic people, representing the site where their early ancestors gathered for discussions and decision-making.
Þingvellir is closely tied to many historical events, including the adoption of Christianity as the official religion of Iceland in the year 1000.
National Park:
Þingvellir is part of the Þingvellir National Park, which was established in 1930. The park not only preserves the historical and cultural significance of the area but also protects its unique geological features.
Visitors to the park can explore walking trails, view historical structures, and witness the remarkable natural scenery.

So much change! I climbed down from the top at Öxarárfoss which is almost visible at the end of this video. Not much trails and no visitor center back then. Few people as well. Nice trails and a spectacular day for photographing. Takk fyrir!
Yeah I feel nostalgic for such a different time. Different but same. Thanks Thomas.
