On top of what you mentioned, running a small ancil makes your pretty vulnerable to getting simply alpha´ed off the field. Except for the "Speedfreak Breacher" I haven´t seen a useful frigate fit with around 1.2k EHP.

There are some ships out there that give bonuses to shield boosters, but not shield extenders. The only one that comes to mind right now is the pacifier, though..

Breacher loves ancillary shieldbooster, but generally its the medium being used not the small... because just as Suitonia says, the small is well... useless :D

The Hawk, Breacher and Pacifier are the only frigates with those bonuses, and well, all of those ships are easily capable of fitting medium boosters.

Maybe CCP put them into the game to help new players learn how to compare modules and learn how to make fits for specific ships for specific reasons.
Yes, they're useless to you as an advance player. But to a new person, it may be an obvious choice to start with. Then they use it, find out it doesnt work and learn to check the attributes first and compare to other modules.

I was almost triggered by the title there then I realized you're talking about the small ancil

LOL @Suitonia - Was this prompted by my (Booga) question in Discord? Thanks for a full explanation and breakdown here tho, even better to help me understand. :)

@Suitonia, correct if I am wrong, but isn’t the point in the ancillary shields the fact it won’t consume cap, thus giving you boost in the shields even if you are capped out? That’s the point I choose them... to make ships cap stable or maintain shield boost eve when out of cap.
And I know you are comparing boosters to extenders, but I think you need both , a small buffer and an active shield repair that doesn’t rely on cap.

Mauricio Moura ancillary booster has 9 charges and uses cap booster

I know this is old but for future people who see this...
Imagine the shield extender as an ancillary shield booster that boosts your shield at the beginning of the fight past 100% shields, and also doesn't use cap.

Useless for 1 v 1 PVP probably, but what about fleet/larger gang PVP? And PVE?

      Still useless.
Putting aside the fact that most fleets would like you to run a medium shield extender or medium ASB, the named small shield extender gives you more buffer. More buffer = less likely to get alphaed right off the field by enemy ships.
      As far as PvE goes.
Small shield boosters may be used in cap stable fits to permatank rats, however, this ASB runs out of charges and has to reload. You can still run it after, but at a much larger cap cost.
I'm no expert in PvE, but I have never seen an ASB fit to ANY PvE ship due to its limited uses.
ASBs in general are PvP modules and have no real place in PvE.

The idea in PVP frigate fleets would be that you give up some alpha protection for the capability to quickly recover after you've been primaried and immediately have warped off. But as many frigates even allow for a medium shield extender fitted, I guess that's the better choice.
As for PVE, I've actually seen ASB belt ratting doctrines designed to keep mining pockets clear, but these are typically destroyers with a medium ASB. From my experience they actually work in that role, as you reload your ASB inbetween astroid belts.

Not too good for pve as it requires (relatively big) charges+ there is the 60s reload. Cap injector (10s reload) and regular booster is a better option. Or jsut cap battery/recharger cap stable fit. I know people use ASB's in wormholes (and capless guns) on bigger ships, to have it easy under neut pressure.
