Union Covered Bridge Renovation and high water

This bridge holds a special place for Monroe County residents. The Mark Twain Lake and Birthplace, this bridge, and the "Do Not Spit On the Floor" signs in the courthouse are the best things to see there.

The supports were there to support and raise the the bridge during renovation. They are going to raise the bridge temporarily 21 inches to inspect and repair the existing abutments. After this operation was done the bridge was to be lowered and the piers taken away. The bridge is solid and fully capable of supporting itself.

True, but the temporary steel framework attached to the bottom of the bridge could catch floating trees and debris and wreak havoc.

It is a lucky break in one sense, much of the weight has been removed for the renovation, just hope the ole girl can hang on for a while longer.

This is a corp of engineers job, I talked to the contractor on this job. They tried to start early and get it done before rainy season but corp wouldn't let them. They also asked to stop after this event and wait till rainy season was over but again corp wouldn't let them. It's crazy to do a project like this on a river that can raise 10 feet or more in one day.
