Takehiko Inoue is INSANELY talented! Going from Manga to directing is not a simple transition but to do it perfectly ON HIS FIRST FILM is just pure insanity! I also loved that he didn't adapt his work 1:1 but reworked the story structure so that it functions beautifully as a film!
Wait WTF I just started Slam Dunk 3 days ago and I already burned through 20 volumes, i thought I would read 5 to 10 chapters per day and I'm already 21 volumes in 3 days last time I got this level of addicted to manga was One Piece I'm gonna get around Vagabond and Real as soon as I finished this and I have scrolled past the first 2 Chapters of Vagabond just to see the artwork and it blew my mind i didn't read any dialogue and just so glimpses of fight but even in that the deatils on every panle is just insane Now you are telling me the guy can even direct 😂😂😂😂

Slam Dunk is the reason that basketball had a massive surge of popularity within Japan in the 90's/2000's and is considered to be the best sports manga ever. (maybe Hajime no Ippo might be more popular, but a ton of ppl love slam dunk)
From the opening introductory sequence (immediately after the prologue), The First Slam Dunk blatantly exclaims what kind of movie it is. It contrasts starkly with the Spiderverse films, where the objective was to earnestly adapt and transfer the world and style of comic books into the medium of film and animation. Inoue instead uses the medium of film and animation to inject life into his manga. I don't think there's a better way of describing it. The manga comes alive. It's much more so "the manga is moving and sounding in a natural, lifelike manner" than "the manga is being animated." In that moment of the last 20 seconds of the game. Inoue really pushes how far his direction goes. It's a magical moment/event/work which very few filmmakers and storytellers alike have achieved in their artistic lifetime. Here, Inoue transcends the mediums of film, manga, and animation and their limitations. There could be an analytical thesis on how Inoue skillfully deconstructs and the three and effectively uses it in mixed medium - but I think the simpler explanation is that this is what happens when an storyteller-auteur creates their "pure art." And the world is better for it.
My mom, 62 years old, was emotional over this movie. It was already so mind-blowing for her that we were able to watch it in the states, but to see that this movie has so much heart made us cry. We were avid watchers in the 90s and 2000s and this anime brings back such fond memories. I really hope they'll consider reanimating the entire manga since it's finally ended, just like with Fruit Basket and Black Butler.
Slam Dunk has such a special place in my heart because it was the first manga I read from beginning to end as a high schooler. Such a great story, and I don’t even like basketball lol!

I never read/watched Slam Dunk prior to watching this in the theater. I ended up going two days in a row, it's so good!! The action is so well directed, the music is hype as hell, the emotional beats are strong. As the movie started I wondered how they were gonna stretch 20 minutes of a basketball game over a 2 hour runtime but they pulled it off, the pacing is perfect. And that last minute is amazing! Everyone was holding their breath. If you're unsure about watching this without prior knowledge of SD, don't be. It's 100% worth the ticket.

That last minute stretch is even more amazing in the manga. Almost the entire chapter for that one minute stretch was done so beautifully without any text for conversations. I could not even imagine any other manga could be done without any text. Inoue is a master mangaka! Its chapter 275 if you are interested hahaha.
Takehiko is a living genius! I was so emotionally invested reading the Slam Dunk manga. It’s definitely one of the best manga ever. Amazing art, outstanding story, incredible characters and now I can’t wait to watch The First Slam Dunk in theaters. Thanks for the review Chris ❤
I was shocked by how great this film was as someone who couldn't care less about sports anime. The 3DCG was used to do some insane stuff that probably hasn't ever been done in anime before.
I'm going to ruin some magic since once you know it it's not so insane, but it's astonishing how many people are unaware of it: all the basketball movements are motion captured. It's still an insane movie and I genuinely and convincingly think there's arguments for The First Slam Dunk to be a nomination for Best Animated Picture, but it's not otherworldly what they pull off.
@@lukeripa you don't automatically get good animation from motion capture. The film clearly understands proper animation techniques and uses them well. A large part of it is also in the camera movements, some of which can't possibly have been motion captured.
You should watch studio orange works, the latest one is trigun stampede, they're the first studio to get 3d anime right, or ufotable studio or mappa studio with Dorohedoro

@@ygsr Motion capture does make movements natural thus making animation better. It's simple logic. So, in a way, motion capture alone does make everything better. Doesn't make a movie good, but helps animation immensely. The thing is a lot of comments, including yours, thought they pulled something extraordinary, but it wasn't. Doesn't make the movie any less good, btw. It's just is what it is.
I'm both surprised and happy to know someone who has no prior knowledge can enjoy this movie this much, because the First Slam Dunk felt to me answered the prayers of the fans' of the manga/anime that concluded more than 2 decades ago! The game against Sannou never made it to the 90's anime and to see it come alive on the silver screen was such a moving experience for me. It must have been more than 10 years when I last read the manga but when the scenes are reenacted I could recite the dialog, recall the exact frame from the book, and see how faithfully the story was recreated. It feels like hanging out with old friends after many years but everything still feels so familiar as if they've always been there. It was truly one of the happiest moviegoing experience.
This is not just a great anime movie. It’s honestly one of the best sports films ever made. It basically is the anime version of Hoosiers, Hoop Dreams and Remember The Titans in one. You don’t need to be a fan of the show because I didn’t know much about the series and I would put this as my best film of 2023. It is the type of feel good popcorn movies Hollywood used to make.
I'm glad the movie is well received even with those going in completely blind. But some moments are truly appreciated with more character context. All the Sakuragi and Rukawa interactions were the result of a complex relationship built over the course of the series. The emotional significance of Rukawa actually passing the ball to Sakuragi in the final moment and their high five is the ultimate highlight for fans who have stayed with the series.
This manga inspired a WHOLE GENERATION in Asia to start playing basketball, I read this match like a million times, this movie is a masterpiece, glad you liked it!
This is the ONE review I wanted to see on this movie! I confess I feared my love for the manga was clouding my judgement, but I did consider this film to be legitimately great. As someone who's working in animation myself (although in 2D), this movie is pure wizardry ! Some of the shots done in cell shading had not only some insane characters animations but also some unseen camera movements, that follow the ball inbetween each players. That was absolutely nuts ! I'm really glad that with this film, the world is about to finally discover the work (and the truly monstruous talent) of Takehiko Inoue. The man has been one of the sacred monsters of the manga scene ever since the 90's, and like his contemporary Togashi with Yuyu Hakusho and Hunter X Hunter, he's one of the rare mangakas who can boast to have not just one, but 2 magnum opus under his pen (Slam Dunk and Vagabond, with Vagabond being consistently in the top 3 of most legendary adult mangas, with Berserk and Vinland Saga). Also, if we saw a bunch of studios film taking note of Into The Spiderverse in 2018 and making several formidable answers to it (Dreamworks Bad Guys & Puss in Boots 2, Netflix's Arcane and Entergalactic, Nickelodeon TMNT Mutant Mayhem), I'm pretty sure The First Slam Dunk is Japan's Toei's answer to the call of the Spiderverse ! And goddamn if that's true, I only want to shout out THANK YOU, SPIDERMAN !
The best 3d animation for an anime I have ever seen. It actually looks better in 3d rather than the traditional 2d drawing. Maybe because basketball is supposed to be full of movements. The flow looks so natural.
Just came back from theaters watching this. I didn't expect to love it this much. This called back to everything that made the original anime so great (humor, unique characters, amazing character development, and great basketball of course) and took it to a new level. A new level of emotional depth, a new level of basketball action scenes (seriously phenomenal), and new grounds in terms of the relationship between characters. If you're a fan of basketball, visual art, movies, sports, or just looking for a good anime film; please please please watch this. This kind of art needs to be supported so more of its' kind can be created.
The last 10 min of the movie was one of the best and most intense moments in fictional work. I read the manga and I remember the sequence vividly, yet when I saw it in the movie it felt like watching it for the first time. So well made, PERFECT. The movie overall was fun but not perfect. Hope we get a Slam Dunk remake
Saw this movie recently as well, and as someone with no prior experience to the source material, I was legitimately floored by the film, it's an incredible entry point that somehow breaks every convention sports films are usually known for. I really love how the whole film centers on one match from beginning to end and doesn't cut any corners, you experience the entire match over the course of the film and it really helped with the viewing experience, I could feel everyone in the theater totally invested like they were watching a real match. Absolutely agree with you on the flashback narrative too, they are never too long and they give each character the right amount of depth, while also fitting into the entire narrative. One of the best surprises of 2023 for me
I got to see this in Japan while studying abroad, and even though I couldn't understand the dialogue (non-Japanese speaker), the film is a testament to how visual storytelling can still keep you on the edge of your seat. Very excited to rewatch this with English subtitles.
Also in animation, you mostly see the heroes' journey so audience has empathy towards them and want them to overcome obstacles HOWEVER in Slam Dunk you get to see the rival's hard work and determinstion to winnit also... And it creates real moments of pressure
True, this movie does not give too much time for the rival team except 2 or 3 of the main members. A lot of them are nameless enemies. But they would have to add an extra hour to tell both sides of the story… hahaha…
I loved the bit at the end with Sannoh's star player having that monkey's paw wish come true situation. One thing that Slam Dunk never really did was portray the opponents as bad people, they are almost always kids with the same dreams as the 5 Shohoku team.
Well, as someone who grew up watching the anime "Slam dunk" and was obsessed with the series during my childhood, I was very skeptical with this movie. I was doubting whether one film can truly capture that pure hype and magic that was so unique in Slam Dunk anime series. Hearing a glowing review from someone unfamiliar with the series made those doubts disappear, and made me - someone who thought Slam Dunk was a thing of the past - really excited about it.

The First Slam Dunk is indeed the movie you must experience it in the theater. i can vividly recall the basketball dribbling sounds, shoes squeaks, player movements, audience cheer, sweats, etc. everything was so damn great it made me feel like im watching the real game. im not even a fan of sports and barely finished the manga but damn i was so emotionally invested. and yes the 3DCG was really mind-blowing.

People do not have to like basketball, or any sports, to enjoy and love this film. I'm so glad you reviewed this. I am not a sports fan. I am barely a Slam Dunk fan, extremely casual reader. And I was so thrilled, uplifted by this movie. It feels like it was made with so much care and intention, kind of like Everything Everywhere All At Once. There is a lot of heart and drive and humour behind this movie and it's a joy to see. Most movies fail to move me--from Indie to mainstream, most are "good" or "meh." I watch maybe 1 movie a year that leaves a strong impression on me, and this year, Slam Dunk is it.
I actually just finished the manga last week, and my heart was pounding just as much as when I watched the movie. *For those who don't know how important this match is:* 1) as far as the National tournament is concerned, Shohoku is an unknown team. 2) this is Shohoku's first time in the National tournament (which is a dream of Captain Akagi, not to mention he is graduating, this is his last chance). 3) they're facing Sannoh (the defending champions for 3 years). 4) the crowd was there to see Sannoh, not the match, Sannoh (the other basketball teams from the bracket were there too, Kainan, Aichi, Daiei etc...).
The only thing is that they skipped the part where Shohoku took down another pretty reasonably strong team to reach Sannoh (inspired very directly by the Bad Boy Pistons no less)

The Slum Dunk anime series has been such a big part of my childhood. Growing up in the Philippines, Basketball is the biggest sports here and it was only natural for Filipinos to gravitate towards this anime. I highly recomend you watch it when you have free time. I am sure you will love it. With that said the, movie is awesome. Hanamichi Sakuragi is still as funny as ever. Now I am not sure which I love more... the Movie or the Anime Series.
I just bought this on a blind buy whim....easily one of the best movies I've ever seen. A perfect blend of 2D and 3D animation. Feels so lifelike..the movie had so much warmth.

The 2.5D/3D anime style actually looks great. Early attempts at it just to save cost always looked horrible to me, but in recent years it has really improved ever since Spider-Verse and Arcane showed its potential. For TV anime, Chainsaw Man did a spectacular job with it too. You should review it!

Chris! I'm totally thrilled that you loved the movie. I haven't seen it but, I fell HARD for the series. Slam Dunk is a true classic, and I strongly recommend checking it out. As a sports anime , the franchise masterfully captures and magnifies moments as well as, if not better, than any anime I've seen. And I love how Inoue gets the characters to motivate and inspire one another. On top of that, the action is stellar of course. It's a powerful show. God bless on your work.
In Italy Slam Dunk was massive because of its amazing dubbing, and I rewatch it yearly since it first aired on TV. And man! I'm waiting for this to come to cinemas here as well
I do wish there are less jumping back and forth since they do go into the backstory of every team member. 2 team members both have black hair and similar hairstyles. I could not tell them apart. But it did not diminish my enjoyment of the film.
I was introduced to Slam Dunk through the 90s anime. It was really good even with its at times stiff animation and pacing issues. However, it got cancelled before the story was finished. So once I finished it I read the manga. It's my second sports animanga series behind only Haikyuu. Watching this film was a treat. Seeing the Shohoku vs Sannoh match finally animated and done so well was amazing. The anime original content by the director/mangaka Inoue really got me emotional. The key parts of the match were done so well. I'd recommend to anyone who's seen this film as their first exposure to Slam Dunk to consider the manga.

The magic of Takehiko Inoue's masterpiece is I could literally cry (I did cry) reading the manga when I was still a teenager, and I could cry while reading it now because I am getting older, and I am having a different point of view about it. I've been a Slam Dunk fans since 1994 and it changed and influenced me entire life
What i loved about this movie (i love slam dunk manga/anime) was the fact that inoue re-worked the last game in order to give Ryota (my favorite character even above sakuragi) a deeper development. Truly a masterpiece.
This review made my girlfriend and I excited go out and see this movie in theatres. I agree with everything said in the review. We didn't have to know anything about Slam Dunk, basketball, or anime and felt the movie gave us all the info needed to follow the characters and the story. Thw audience was intensely silent being fully wrapped up in the back and forth of the game playing out. This is up there as one our best movie experiences in years and one of my favorite sports movies ever.
I saw this movie in Japan, Anime expo, NYC last week, and last night back home. This movie hits every time! An instant classic and hope this film wins best animated film!
I highly recommend the series to anyone who hasn’t read or watched it, Inoue also has a series called Real which is another basketball series but this time about wheelchair basketball. Vagabond is also by him and is easily one of my favorite manga. Beautiful art and story in all three.
The fact that they allowed Inoue to direct was insane and then he serves this up. Truly gifted. Despite being a local, I didn’t know much about the manga, but it just blew me away. It’s been 8months and it’s still playing theatrically over here. If you’re going, try getting Dolby Atmos!
Slam Dunk is my favourite sports manga of all time. I grew up with it and its anime series. It's highly influential and plays a huge part in many Asians' childhood. Glad you enjoyed the movie without all the context
I love Slam Dunk. I grew up watching it and it was one of the most papular anime in my country. After watching it multiple times in 3 different languages and reading the manga at least 2 times the heart, characters and story is still so amazing. I highly recommend the anime and manga.
Finally got to watch this on Netflix today. My god what a masterpiece. I’ve heard about Slam Dunk here n there over the years but had no knowledge of the story or characters so I went into this blind but was won over by everything about this. Literally a godlike piece of work. Holy shit
I think it's only in the west where the series didn't really break into mainstream fame. In Asia, in my opinion, in the 90s and early 2000 this manga was more influential in getting school kids into basketball than even the NBA.
I never read nor watch the anime at all before, went to theater out of curiosity, wow, it blown me away, and after that, I went and watch it for another 2 times. Worth every penny and it's the kind of movie that you shouldn't miss seeing it in the cinema.
When we found out that Sota was only 12 years old was such a enlightening moment. From our Ryota's perspective and thus the audience, he looks so much older. He was just a scared kid trying to be strong for his family, and when Miyagi's sister said how old he was, and that even though Ryota was far older than Sota ever was, he still viewed him as his bigger and wiser brother
Interesting enough, Slam Dunk was a hit on LATAM, just at the level of DBZ. I just saw the movie on a theater full of people arround my age who grew up with this show and… what an experience, a full rollercoast of emotions 💖
As someone who has only watched Cowboy Bebop and th first season of One Punch Man, yet has still not gotten really into anime… you’re exactly right. This is a gateway anime movie. Watched it last week and immediately went home and started figuring out what series I wanted to watch next
I was really hesitant to watch the Slam Dunk movie since I love the old 90's anime style; however, the animation in the film is so seamless that you can't really tell. I was so immersed in the basketball scenes that I didn't feel the run time at all. The soundtrack is sooo good. I'm glad I saw this in theaters.
The crazy part too - and I believe this worked because Inoue himself directed this- Ryoka is not the main character of Slam Dunk but to have this film place him as the focal point just was instant emotional connection.
Had a chance to see this this past weekend. Never heard of it, but I wanted to support an anime film. Honestly blew me away by how much I loved this. Makes me wanna watch more sports animes (Hajime No Ippo being one of them 🙌🏽)

I wish it had been marketed outside of core anime fans (and released at a different time) so this would be noticed by mass audiences in theaters instead of streaming (I hope this gets on a more mass market streamer at least). It was so great to see this on the big screen. Masterpiece.
I was fortunate enough to have been able to watch the US premiere of The First Slam Dunk at Anime Expo in July. While the projection screens weren’t the best and the seating arrangement wasn’t ideal, I was still absolutely blown away by the visuals. Perhaps because it was such an unconventional movie viewing experience the audience and I found ourselves loudly cheering at each big moment during the basketball action which was electrifying. Now having also seen it in an actual theater, I’ve fallen even deeper in love with this film. I’m really glad to see it’s getting the recognition it deserves. Great review Chris!

Thank you for the review on this masterpiece! I am a Japanese Slam Dunk fan. If you have the chance, please go see it at the theater. In Japan (beyond “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” and “Suzume”), it is a big hit of 15 billion yen at the box office, and still being screened 8 months after its release. The action and artwork are amazing like real sports game, and the story reconstructed by Inoue is perfect. Another point is that it reflects the actual culture and history of Japanese high school basketball. It's a movie that shows the consistent theme of slam dunk which is that falling in love with something and working hard to overcome a wall!
Chris please do a review on Talk to Me I would love to hear your thoughts on this film, I personally think it is one of the best horror movies that I have seen in a long time, easily a 10/10, the concept, acting, score, cinematography, everything was just great. It was also UA-camrs RackaRacka's directorial debut.

As soon as I saw this review, I booked tickets for the opening night to go see it! I didn't even realise that they had begun bookings for it, but I'm so glad you uploaded this review. It helped remind me to check! Initially I was a bit turned off by the 3D, but it looks like the best 3D we've ever gotten in an anime trying to replicate the 2D style. I still would've preferred 2D, but I'm sure I'll adjust quickly

I really hope they'll consider reanimating the entire manga since it's finally ended, just like with Fruit Basket and Black Butler.
Slam Dunk has such a special place in my heart because it was the first manga I read from beginning to end as a high schooler. Such a great story, and I don’t even like basketball lol!

I never read/watched Slam Dunk prior to watching this in the theater. I ended up going two days in a row, it's so good!! The action is so well directed, the music is hype as hell, the emotional beats are strong. As the movie started I wondered how they were gonna stretch 20 minutes of a basketball game over a 2 hour runtime but they pulled it off, the pacing is perfect. And that last minute is amazing! Everyone was holding their breath. If you're unsure about watching this without prior knowledge of SD, don't be. It's 100% worth the ticket.

That last minute stretch is even more amazing in the manga. Almost the entire chapter for that one minute stretch was done so beautifully without any text for conversations. I could not even imagine any other manga could be done without any text. Inoue is a master mangaka! Its chapter 275 if you are interested hahaha.
Takehiko is a living genius! I was so emotionally invested reading the Slam Dunk manga. It’s definitely one of the best manga ever. Amazing art, outstanding story, incredible characters and now I can’t wait to watch The First Slam Dunk in theaters. Thanks for the review Chris ❤

I was shocked by how great this film was as someone who couldn't care less about sports anime. The 3DCG was used to do some insane stuff that probably hasn't ever been done in anime before.
I'm going to ruin some magic since once you know it it's not so insane, but it's astonishing how many people are unaware of it: all the basketball movements are motion captured.
It's still an insane movie and I genuinely and convincingly think there's arguments for The First Slam Dunk to be a nomination for Best Animated Picture, but it's not otherworldly what they pull off.
@@lukeripa you don't automatically get good animation from motion capture. The film clearly understands proper animation techniques and uses them well. A large part of it is also in the camera movements, some of which can't possibly have been motion captured.
You should watch studio orange works, the latest one is trigun stampede, they're the first studio to get 3d anime right, or ufotable studio or mappa studio with Dorohedoro

I'm both surprised and happy to know someone who has no prior knowledge can enjoy this movie this much, because the First Slam Dunk felt to me answered the prayers of the fans' of the manga/anime that concluded more than 2 decades ago! The game against Sannou never made it to the 90's anime and to see it come alive on the silver screen was such a moving experience for me.
It must have been more than 10 years when I last read the manga but when the scenes are reenacted I could recite the dialog, recall the exact frame from the book, and see how faithfully the story was recreated. It feels like hanging out with old friends after many years but everything still feels so familiar as if they've always been there. It was truly one of the happiest moviegoing experience.
This is not just a great anime movie. It’s honestly one of the best sports films ever made. It basically is the anime version of Hoosiers, Hoop Dreams and Remember The Titans in one. You don’t need to be a fan of the show because I didn’t know much about the series and I would put this as my best film of 2023. It is the type of feel good popcorn movies Hollywood used to make.
I'm glad the movie is well received even with those going in completely blind. But some moments are truly appreciated with more character context. All the Sakuragi and Rukawa interactions were the result of a complex relationship built over the course of the series. The emotional significance of Rukawa actually passing the ball to Sakuragi in the final moment and their high five is the ultimate highlight for fans who have stayed with the series.

This is the ONE review I wanted to see on this movie! I confess I feared my love for the manga was clouding my judgement, but I did consider this film to be legitimately great. Your perspective is invaluable! I am so glad you loved it! So now excuse me, I will run off and recommend it to everyone I come across, hahaha.
As someone who's working in animation myself (although in 2D), this movie is pure wizardry ! Some of the shots done in cell shading had not only some insane characters animations but also some unseen camera movements, that follow the ball inbetween each players. That was absolutely nuts !
I'm really glad that with this film, the world is about to finally discover the work (and the truly monstruous talent) of Takehiko Inoue. The man has been one of the sacred monsters of the manga scene ever since the 90's, and like his contemporary Togashi with Yuyu Hakusho and Hunter X Hunter, he's one of the rare mangakas who can boast to have not just one, but 2 magnum opus under his pen (Slam Dunk and Vagabond, with Vagabond being consistently in the top 3 of most legendary adult mangas, with Berserk and Vinland Saga).
Also, if we saw a bunch of studios film taking note of Into The Spiderverse in 2018 and making several formidable answers to it (Dreamworks Bad Guys & Puss in Boots 2, Netflix's Arcane and Entergalactic, Nickelodeon TMNT Mutant Mayhem), I'm pretty sure The First Slam Dunk is Japan's Toei's answer to the call of the Spiderverse !
And goddamn if that's true, I only want to shout out THANK YOU, SPIDERMAN !

The best 3d animation for an anime I have ever seen. It actually looks better in 3d rather than the traditional 2d drawing. Maybe because basketball is supposed to be full of movements. The flow looks so natural.
Just came back from theaters watching this. I didn't expect to love it this much. This called back to everything that made the original anime so great (humor, unique characters, amazing character development, and great basketball of course) and took it to a new level. A new level of emotional depth, a new level of basketball action scenes (seriously phenomenal), and new grounds in terms of the relationship between characters. If you're a fan of basketball, visual art, movies, sports, or just looking for a good anime film; please please please watch this. This kind of art needs to be supported so more of its' kind can be created.

The last 10 min of the movie was one of the best and most intense moments in fictional work. I read the manga and I remember the sequence vividly, yet when I saw it in the movie it felt like watching it for the first time. So well made, PERFECT.
The movie overall was fun but not perfect. Hope we get a Slam Dunk remake
Saw this movie recently as well, and as someone with no prior experience to the source material, I was legitimately floored by the film, it's an incredible entry point that somehow breaks every convention sports films are usually known for. I really love how the whole film centers on one match from beginning to end and doesn't cut any corners, you experience the entire match over the course of the film and it really helped with the viewing experience, I could feel everyone in the theater totally invested like they were watching a real match. Absolutely agree with you on the flashback narrative too, they are never too long and they give each character the right amount of depth, while also fitting into the entire narrative. One of the best surprises of 2023 for me
I got to see this in Japan while studying abroad, and even though I couldn't understand the dialogue (non-Japanese speaker), the film is a testament to how visual storytelling can still keep you on the edge of your seat. Very excited to rewatch this with English subtitles.
Also in animation, you mostly see the heroes' journey so audience has empathy towards them and want them to overcome obstacles HOWEVER in Slam Dunk you get to see the rival's hard work and determinstion to winnit also... And it creates real moments of pressure
True, this movie does not give too much time for the rival team except 2 or 3 of the main members. A lot of them are nameless enemies. But they would have to add an extra hour to tell both sides of the story… hahaha…
I loved the bit at the end with Sannoh's star player having that monkey's paw wish come true situation. One thing that Slam Dunk never really did was portray the opponents as bad people, they are almost always kids with the same dreams as the 5 Shohoku team.
Well, as someone who grew up watching the anime "Slam dunk" and was obsessed with the series during my childhood, I was very skeptical with this movie. I was doubting whether one film can truly capture that pure hype and magic that was so unique in Slam Dunk anime series.
Hearing a glowing review from someone unfamiliar with the series made those doubts disappear, and made me - someone who thought Slam Dunk was a thing of the past - really excited about it.

I'm so glad you reviewed this. I am not a sports fan. I am barely a Slam Dunk fan, extremely casual reader. And I was so thrilled, uplifted by this movie. It feels like it was made with so much care and intention, kind of like Everything Everywhere All At Once. There is a lot of heart and drive and humour behind this movie and it's a joy to see. Most movies fail to move me--from Indie to mainstream, most are "good" or "meh." I watch maybe 1 movie a year that leaves a strong impression on me, and this year, Slam Dunk is it.
I actually just finished the manga last week, and my heart was pounding just as much as when I watched the movie.
*For those who don't know how important this match is:*
1) as far as the National tournament is concerned, Shohoku is an unknown team.
2) this is Shohoku's first time in the National tournament (which is a dream of Captain Akagi, not to mention he is graduating, this is his last chance).
3) they're facing Sannoh (the defending champions for 3 years).
4) the crowd was there to see Sannoh, not the match, Sannoh (the other basketball teams from the bracket were there too, Kainan, Aichi, Daiei etc...).
The only thing is that they skipped the part where Shohoku took down another pretty reasonably strong team to reach Sannoh (inspired very directly by the Bad Boy Pistons no less)

Honestly, even tho there's across the spider verse and other animated movie, the first slam dunk is still my favorite animated movie this year, glad you gave it an A+
The Slum Dunk anime series has been such a big part of my childhood. Growing up in the Philippines, Basketball is the biggest sports here and it was only natural for Filipinos to gravitate towards this anime. I highly recomend you watch it when you have free time. I am sure you will love it.
With that said the, movie is awesome. Hanamichi Sakuragi is still as funny as ever. Now I am not sure which I love more... the Movie or the Anime Series.

I just bought this on a blind buy whim....easily one of the best movies I've ever seen. A perfect blend of 2D and 3D animation. Feels so lifelike..the movie had so much warmth.

The 2.5D/3D anime style actually looks great. Early attempts at it just to save cost always looked horrible to me, but in recent years it has really improved ever since Spider-Verse and Arcane showed its potential. For TV anime, Chainsaw Man did a spectacular job with it too. You should review it!

Honestly CG wasn't always as bad as people make it out to be. Berserk trilogy, Kengan Asura and Knight of Sidonia all have great CG.
Chris! I'm totally thrilled that you loved the movie. I haven't seen it but, I fell HARD for the series. Slam Dunk is a true classic, and I strongly recommend checking it out. As a sports anime , the franchise masterfully captures and magnifies moments as well as, if not better, than any anime I've seen. And I love how Inoue gets the characters to motivate and inspire one another. On top of that, the action is stellar of course. It's a powerful show. God bless on your work.
In Italy Slam Dunk was massive because of its amazing dubbing, and I rewatch it yearly since it first aired on TV. And man! I'm waiting for this to come to cinemas here as well

It's truly incredible how this movie is both enjoyable for those who are fans of the manga, and those who haven't even touched the source material.
I do wish there are less jumping back and forth since they do go into the backstory of every team member. 2 team members both have black hair and similar hairstyles. I could not tell them apart. But it did not diminish my enjoyment of the film.
I was introduced to Slam Dunk through the 90s anime. It was really good even with its at times stiff animation and pacing issues. However, it got cancelled before the story was finished. So once I finished it I read the manga. It's my second sports animanga series behind only Haikyuu. Watching this film was a treat. Seeing the Shohoku vs Sannoh match finally animated and done so well was amazing. The anime original content by the director/mangaka Inoue really got me emotional. The key parts of the match were done so well. I'd recommend to anyone who's seen this film as their first exposure to Slam Dunk to consider the manga.

The magic of Takehiko Inoue's masterpiece is I could literally cry (I did cry) reading the manga when I was still a teenager, and I could cry while reading it now because I am getting older, and I am having a different point of view about it.
I've been a Slam Dunk fans since 1994 and it changed and influenced me entire life
What i loved about this movie (i love slam dunk manga/anime) was the fact that inoue re-worked the last game in order to give Ryota (my favorite character even above sakuragi) a deeper development. Truly a masterpiece.
This is a classic anime loved by millions around the world, it's great to see it back and better than ever.
This review made my girlfriend and I excited go out and see this movie in theatres. I agree with everything said in the review. We didn't have to know anything about Slam Dunk, basketball, or anime and felt the movie gave us all the info needed to follow the characters and the story. Thw audience was intensely silent being fully wrapped up in the back and forth of the game playing out. This is up there as one our best movie experiences in years and one of my favorite sports movies ever.
I saw this movie in Japan, Anime expo, NYC last week, and last night back home. This movie hits every time! An instant classic and hope this film wins best animated film!

I highly recommend the series to anyone who hasn’t read or watched it, Inoue also has a series called Real which is another basketball series but this time about wheelchair basketball. Vagabond is also by him and is easily one of my favorite manga. Beautiful art and story in all three.

The fact that they allowed Inoue to direct was insane and then he serves this up. Truly gifted. Despite being a local, I didn’t know much about the manga, but it just blew me away. It’s been 8months and it’s still playing theatrically over here. If you’re going, try getting Dolby Atmos!
Slam Dunk is my favourite sports manga of all time. I grew up with it and its anime series. It's highly influential and plays a huge part in many Asians' childhood. Glad you enjoyed the movie without all the context
I love Slam Dunk. I grew up watching it and it was one of the most papular anime in my country. After watching it multiple times in 3 different languages and reading the manga at least 2 times the heart, characters and story is still so amazing. I highly recommend the anime and manga.
Finally got to watch this on Netflix today. My god what a masterpiece. I’ve heard about Slam Dunk here n there over the years but had no knowledge of the story or characters so I went into this blind but was won over by everything about this. Literally a godlike piece of work. Holy shit
I think it's only in the west where the series didn't really break into mainstream fame. In Asia, in my opinion, in the 90s and early 2000 this manga was more influential in getting school kids into basketball than even the NBA.

When we found out that Sota was only 12 years old was such a enlightening moment. From our Ryota's perspective and thus the audience, he looks so much older. He was just a scared kid trying to be strong for his family, and when Miyagi's sister said how old he was, and that even though Ryota was far older than Sota ever was, he still viewed him as his bigger and wiser brother
Interesting enough, Slam Dunk was a hit on LATAM, just at the level of DBZ. I just saw the movie on a theater full of people arround my age who grew up with this show and… what an experience, a full rollercoast of emotions 💖

This is one of the movies of the year, saw it twice in Japan theaters
I was really hesitant to watch the Slam Dunk movie since I love the old 90's anime style; however, the animation in the film is so seamless that you can't really tell. I was so immersed in the basketball scenes that I didn't feel the run time at all. The soundtrack is sooo good. I'm glad I saw this in theaters.
I JUST SAW IT YESTERDAY here in Mexico and ooooh gosh, the team planned EVERY SINGLE play. And the Sound OH MY GOD THE SOUND DESIGN AND MIX!!!!!

The crazy part too - and I believe this worked because Inoue himself directed this- Ryoka is not the main character of Slam Dunk but to have this film place him as the focal point just was instant emotional connection.

I wish it had been marketed outside of core anime fans (and released at a different time) so this would be noticed by mass audiences in theaters instead of streaming (I hope this gets on a more mass market streamer at least). I was fortunate enough to have been able to watch the US premiere of The First Slam Dunk at Anime Expo in July. While the projection screens weren’t the best and the seating arrangement wasn’t ideal, I was still absolutely blown away by the visuals. Perhaps because it was such an unconventional movie viewing experience the audience and I found ourselves loudly cheering at each big moment during the basketball action which was electrifying. Now having also seen it in an actual theater, I’ve fallen even deeper in love with this film. I’m really glad to see it’s getting the recognition it deserves. Great review Chris!

Thank you for the review on this masterpiece! I am a Japanese Slam Dunk fan. If you have the chance, please go see it at the theater. In Japan (beyond “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” and “Suzume”), it is a big hit of 15 billion yen at the box office, and still being screened 8 months after its release.
The action and artwork are amazing like real sports game, and the story reconstructed by Inoue is perfect. Another point is that it reflects the actual culture and history of Japanese high school basketball. It's a movie that shows the consistent theme of slam dunk which is that falling in love with something and working hard to overcome a wall!

It helped remind me to check! Initially I was a bit turned off by the 3D, but it looks like the best 3D we've ever gotten in an anime trying to replicate the 2D style. I still would've preferred 2D, but I'm sure I'll adjust quickly

I loves this anime. I saw it in the early 2000’s in spanish (Im from Puerto Rico) and I even recorded many episodes at that time. Great times!!
