You actually gave us a lesson on pocket knife safety. This is literally the very first class on pocketknife safety I have ever seen. WELL DONE, too. When I was a little fellow all of the guys took our pocketknives to elementary school. Sometimes, during recess, we would play, mumbly-peg, a three bladed pocketknife game. That was a long long time ago; times and pocketknives have changed. Heh, heh... I thought your boy was gonna give the class. Are you resorting to click-bait? I bet he could have done a good job. He comes from good stock. Thanks for the reminder. Texas

Very well executed. My first pocket knife was a BSA Case folding knife I got way back in the mid 1960's (yeah, old guy here). My second knife was the famous Buck 110 locking blade knife I picked up in the early 1970's. I still have the same Buck 110 today but lost the BSA Case decades ago. Cheers and stay safe!

My dad recently passed away a week before my son was born.
It's been an incredibly taxing time of emotional extremes formy family and I.
That said, I was raised in hunting and camping by my father. I've always expected him to be a part of this journey with my son like he was with me.
It's not that I don't know what to say. It's that I didn't think I'd be alone in saying it.
Thank you, this video helped remind me that I'm not.

Man you are in that spot and it's a tough spot to be in. That being said you will be able to say to your boy " well your G-pa showed me these things just like this" be able to have your dad with you just in a different way. Also enjoy the little things man cuz before you know it you wake up and your boy is 18 and all the little things are just a memory.

Great! 1st vid for 10-year old grandson. I was at my local truck accessory store and discovered he was doing a promotion (favorite nascar driver), and quickly said to grandson, this is for you. He’s accomplished with frog gig, 20-gauge (squirrels, targets), .22 (squirrels), etc., so he’s ready for a quality knife.

Another great little practical presentation from Dan. I've still got my first pocket knife from the 70's (somewhere), I must go and find it. This is a great video, very original and informative compared to other knife safety videos I've seen. Question for everyone in the comments: what currently produced knives would you pick for an 11 to 13 year old boy or girl? Can be anything, fixed, folding, utility knife. No wrong answers. My first was a Swiss Army Camper with a saw, but my current favorites are very different.

Good basic teaching for any youngster. It goes hand in hand with gun safety, learn how it works, learn how to hold, and then learn correct use.
I learned that over in the K, if you are found carrying any kind of knife, other than what you showed or similar, you are going to jail for a few years. For some dumb reason they believe that a folding knife is not dangerous, but a smaller locking blade is, Go figure.
I've just discovered your channel. Teaching simple out door skills is quite a good thing. I'll be watching a bunch of your stuff now. ;-)

Never received a knife as a gift from either my parents or grand parents. Bought my first one on the sly when I was 5. It was one of those mega stores in the 80s, had groceries, clothes, appliances, and a nice girl, probably in her early 20s, working behind a glass case of knives. I was afforded a certain amount of independence since I wasn't a troublemaker, so I asked my mother if I could go look at 'the toys' while she started grocery shopping. Headed towards the toy aisle, doubled back when I knew she was out of site, and went straight to the knives. Asked to buy a folding knife (a good sized locking Buck; the one with the brown handle and brass caps). The girl looked at me and asked if my parents knew where I was and what I was doing. I said, "yeah, my mom's right over there". Turned around, pointed towards a group of women shopping in the produce section. I waved, and what do you know, one of them waved back! The girl behind the counter decided that was good enough, and with the tiniest bit of hesitation, sold me the knife. Thanked her, walked towards my surrogate mother, pocketed the knife, and lingered close enough to her to make it look good until I saw knife girl was no longer looking my way. Turned, and walked very very briskly to the toy aisle to await my actual mother.
I still have that Buck knife to this day, but only told my mother that story about 10 years ago, lol.

I started out with my father's lock back knife. After a while he gave me a slip-joint knife but neglected to go over any of the safety stuff, I closed that knife on my fingers more than once.
    Things to watch out for:
When making a forceful cut through a stick that you're holding in your other hand, your arms might spring back a bit, the spine can hit the stick you just cut.
If the blade sticks in a cut be careful pulling it out.
Traditional slip joints often have strong springs with no let off.
Now I carry a modern slip joint that has a detent part way and past that the ricasso hits your index finger. I still don't trust slip joints, only use it when I can't carry a fixed blade.

I remember well my first knife. My Dad was what we would now call a "soy boy". He never had any interest in guns or knives. My Uncle Ted was a different story because he was an Army vet. He got me a Rambo knife for my 10th Birthday. That was one serious chunk of steel. I had so much fun and got pretty good at throwing it and sticking it in to the side of our garage. I hope to pass it on to my nephew.

I honestly can't remember my first knife. I've always carried at least 1 blade on me since I was around 11 or 12. Had a cheap butterfly knife through my teens that I would constantly fidget with and that got me comfortable handling a blade. I'm 37 now and handling a knife is second nature to me.
For the record I think SAKs and other non-locking knives aren't the best knives for learning especially if the person is uncomfortable handling knives. As you've mentioned they can easily close on your hand if you're not careful.

The triangle of death is the space between you upper legs, including the groin and both femoral arteries. A cut there is likely lethal.
The blood circle is the area 360° around you and farther than arm's length, where someone could come into contact with a blade being pushed away from the material being cut.

Make sure it locks so the blade doesn’t fold up their fingers.

I had a pocket knife that cut me it opened up in my pocket by itself after I went to the er it turned out it was broken I bought it on eBay and it said it wasn’t broken. I got home from the er a week ago and I’m still angry it turned out the eBay seller didn’t know and we sent it back and he said it was a pushing problem that he had nothing to do with and that was the end of it

I suggest do not give a child a knife until they have an attention span. Are not easily distracted and forget to fold it up before walking around with it..

The first time I tried showing my boys the way around a multitool I cut the crap out of my finger. Lots of drippy blood. Not the best 1st lesson. 😅
