Recently an elderly mystic wrote to me on hearing of my illness and said "I am awestruck by the news of yourself: awestruck by the grace Our Lord is giving you to live so close to Him in your sharing of His Passion.". And however counter intuitive it seems, I experience it as true. I know to a non believer it sounds madness, but it's very clear to me. Best wishes

    1. Ich habe genug (Aria: B) 00:00
    "Ich habe genug,
    Ich habe den Heiland, das Hoffen der Frommen,
    Auf meine begierigen Arme genommen;
    Ich habe genug!
    --
    Ich hab ihn erblickt,
    Mein Glaube hat Jesum ans Herze gedrückt;
    Nun wünsch ich, noch heute mit Freuden
    Von hinnen zu scheiden."
    2. Ich habe genug (Recitative: B) 07:25
    "Ich habe genug.
    Mein Trost ist nur allein,
    Dass Jesus mein und ich sein eigen möchte sein.
    Im Glauben halt ich ihn,
    Da seh ich auch mit Simeon
    Die Freude jenes Lebens schon.
    Laßt uns mit diesem Manne zehn!
    Ach! möchte mich von meines Leibes Ketten
    Der Herr erretten;
    Ach! wäre doch mein Abschied hier,
    Mit Freuden sagt ich, Welt, zu dir:
    Ich habe genug."
    3. Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen (Aria: B) 08:26
    "Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen,
    Fallet sanft und selig zu!
    --
    Welt, ich bleibe nicht mehr hier,
    Hab ich doch kein Teil an dir,
    Das der Seele könnte taugen.
    --
    Hier muss ich das Elend bauen,
    Aber dort, dort werd ich schauen
    Süßen Friede, stille Ruh."
    4. Mein Gott! wann kömmt das schöne: Nun! (Recitative: B) 18:04
    "Mein Gott! wann kömmt das schöne: Nun!
    Da ich im Friede fahren werde
    Und in dem Sande kühler Erde
    Und dort bei dir im Schoße ruhe?
    Der Abschied ist gemacht,
    Welt, gute Nacht!"
    5. Ich freue mich auf meinen Tod (Aria: B) 18:47
    "Ich freue mich auf meinen Tod,
    Ach, hätt er sich schon eingefunden.
    --
    Da entkomm ich aller Not,
    Die mich noch auf der Welt gebunden."

    My one consolation is this:
    That I am Jesus’ beloved and he is mine.
    In faith, I hold him.
    For in Simeon, I already see
    The joy of life to come.
    Let us go forth with Simeon!
    The words of the cantata refer to Luke's Gospel near the beginning where old Simeon takes the infant Jesus in his arms with wonderful words in his mouth. Rembrandt has a moving painting of the scene. It relates to what Bach was thinking. The lady with the huge bunch of sunflowers does not unfortunately!

    ..and to think that Bach wrote one of these cantatas every week for some seven years in addition to all his other responsibilities and composition. It beggars belief! There are so many extant cantatas, more than 200, that it is a struggle to listen to them all - I tried over a period of three years and probably didn't get past half way. How he could have written them at the same rate as I was stuggling to listen to them is something that can only be marvelled at. Of course they were, at some level, disposable (in the sense that the vast majority were not revisited in his lifetime) though anyone who knows Bach will know that he will still have striven to make them as perfect as his time allowed. Perhaps the most gargantuan effort in all classical composition (yes, yes, I know that Telemann wrote more but at a much lower level of inspiration; not that he doesn't have his moments). It amuses me that if Bach had written only ten of these cantatas they would be much more revered like Beethoven and his symphonies. 200+ is so hard to get to grips with. You could say that less is more but of course with Bach more is more......................

      Simple answer: Bach wrote because he had to, it just flowed from him. Just as other musical greats just poured out their music, because they had to.

      I agree with you....quite inexplicable how Bach wrote so much sublime music... Could there have been Devine intervention, or is it a Devine gift... ..or ,or, do I do a dis- service to Bach himself...who wrote his music to glorify and celebrate The Lord and why it is said Angels listen to Mozart but when The Lord listens to music HE listens to Bach..
      It always amuses me when scientists look for alternatives to a Devine Creator of the Universe when right before them, closer to home. is such incredible beauty of Bach that can never he explained or replicated by mathematical formula or a computer. that they should shake their heads in dismay over their own blindness and stupidity.

    Έχω αρκετά. Έχω δεχθεί το Σωτήρα, την ελπίδα των πιστών στην αγκαλιά μου που Τον λαχταρούσε. Έχω αρκετά. Αντίκρισα Εκείνον, η πίστη μου έχει αγκαλιάσει τον Ιησού και σήμερα θα άφηνα με χαρά αυτόν τον κόσμο. Μοναδική ελπίδα μου είναι ο Ιησούς ότι θα γίνει δικός μου κι εγώ δικός Του. Στηρίζομαι σ’ Αυτόν με πίστη και όπως ο Συμεών, διακρίνω ήδη τη χαρά αυτής της άλλης ζωής. Ας Τον ακολουθήσουμε. Είθε ο Κύριος να με απελευθέρωνε από τα δεσμά της ανθρώπινης μορφής μου- Είθε η ημέρα της αναχώρησής μου να είχε φθάσει με χαρά τότε θα έλεγα στον κόσμο:«Έχω αρκετά».
    «Αναπαυθείτε τώρα κουρασμένα μάτια- κλείστε απαλά και ειρηνικά. Κόσμε, δε μένω άλλο πια εδώ. Σε αποκηρύσσω, ώστε το πνεύμα μου να αναθάλλει. Εδώ τα πάντα είναι δυστυχία, εκεί όμως θα αντικρίσω γλυκιά ειρήνη, τέλεια ανάπαυση». Σ’ αυτό το σημείο εκφράζεται μια θερμή παράκληση: «Θεέ μου! Πότε θα με καλέσεις να έλθω ειρηνικά κοντά Σου, να ξαπλώσω στη δροσερή γη και ν’ αναπαυθώ εκεί σε Σένα;». «Θεέ μου! Πότε θα με καλέσεις να έλθω ειρηνικά κοντά Σου, να ξαπλώσω στη δροσερή γη και ν’ αναπαυθώ εκεί σε Σένα;». «Καληνύχτα κόσμε!». «Αγαλλιάζω στο θάνατο μου»…

Geniuses like Bach are not “produced” from any type of educational system. They are intrinsic. A true genius will stand out often even when deprived of opportunities. A good education system can make a world of difference, but you’re not going to get more J.S. Bach’s from them.

    • @JimEadon
      @JimEadon 4 роки тому +3

      @@landonpoch that's a bit of a myth. Geniuses like classical music geniuses, Shakespeare, etc. were, more often than not, extremely highly educated. We don't push pupils hard enough in our soft, woke education system, and don't teach them the right things.
