The first two arias of this cantata ('Ich habe genug' and 'Schlummert ein') surely represent Bach's musical invention at its most inspired and elevated. Truly sublime inspiration!

Geniuses like Bach are not “produced” from any type of educational system. They are intrinsic. A true genius will stand out often even when deprived of opportunities. A good education system can make a world of difference, but you’re not going to get more J.S. Bach’s from them.
@@landonpoch that's a bit of a myth. Geniuses like classical music geniuses, Shakespeare, etc. were, more often than not, extremely highly educated. We don't push pupils hard enough in our soft, woke education system, and don't teach them the right things.
@@JimEadon I was briefly a high school teacher to pay for university. They don't learn anything in schools anymore. The education programs are all about learning through social interaction, which, if you're interacting with ignorants, doesn't do much. I'm also a church organist. Most kids don't even know what an organ is.
@@JimEadon It's not about pushing pupils hard. Genius follows its own purpose and carves out its own path. Thats why most geniuses are self taught Da vinci, Edison , Feynman so on and so on. We actually need to give pupils more freedom to follow their natural inclinations and provoke them to think critically and take nothing at face value. . But i also agree with Landon, this will not produce any more geniuses but may help sharpen those that already exist.

So beautiful. I heard Ely Ameling do this in concert and this is this is the first time I've heard it surpassed.
+David Goorevitch Check out Herreweghe's BWV 82a with Nancy Argenta if you want to hear the same cantata sung by soprano.
I have it. It's this version I mean when I say it surpasses Ely. But her stage presence! Only Springsteen and Armstrong compare(d).
Beautiful performance--so poignant. I used to have an LP with Hermann Prey. If memory serves, this sounds even more beautiful.
I had it too and I agree.
And thank you Herreweghe !!!
Proof of the God and heaven.
I'm learning this cantata....it's so difficult and marvellous at the same time...Herreweghe's good version
Grazie Micheal
IN GREECE WE LOVE BACH A LOT.HE IS THE BEST COMPOSER OF ALL SEASONS.WE LOVE ALSO GERMAN PEOPLE.THE PLACE OF GREECE IS IN EUROPE.
+ΑΝΤΩΝΙΟΣ ΔΑΝΕΖΗΣ haha since when greek people like german? huh...
With of course the ECB... ahem!
It is better to hear a voice of love than of hate
Ich Habe Genug von leben.

For Grey Macleod: the performance you are describing was Lorraine Hunt Lieberson in a Peter Sellers production. There is a wonderful CD of her singing this cantata. Worth chasing down.
The wonderful Lorraine was terminally ill with cancer at the time. A great loss to music.
You might be talking about the recording I was listening to before coming here. It has both BWV 82 and 199. Search for

Amazing ❤️❤️
Bach was from a time of small populations. Imagine how many geniuses we could have produced if our education system were not so dumbed down.
@@Rudolph1722 Considering school is where children and teenergaers learn how to socialize (and are socialized by that process), i would argue that it does very much in that regard
Ein echt toller Kommentar!
Sublime!
