Can’t wait for you guys to review the R8 Just got my hands on one, insanely smooth rod, incredible feel and accuracy in close , laser loops and high line speeds all the way out at long distances, this rod is a home run
I like to use a straight-eye hook on small flies to give that tiny hook all the hook-gap(e) possible. I actually do that with #16 and smaller. In CA the Tricos start at the first week of June and run until about the 4th week of Sept. So they have them all summer there. Trico's don't get as small out west as they do in the East Coast. Typically #18 & 20. The Baetis gets smaller out West to a #22. I like to use a few fibers of Crystal Flash as the wings because it absorbs the ambient light like the natural wings do and you don't have to switch to an orange-winged fly if you have an orange sunset. If someone has trouble tying a fly down at #20 and below (obviously Levi doesn't), they can tie two flies on a size #16 or even #14 hook because Trico clumps of spinners are quite common. And folks remember, mistakes on small flies are much harder to see than mistakes on larger flies, so don't let tying small flies intimidate you.
