This week I'm applying the finishing touches to the kitchen unit I've been building from scratch for the small barn at my Portuguese farm. Some mistakes were made along the way, but I'm quite happy with the result!
Wao man, impressive progress!! You have a lot of hidden knowledge!!
Thank you! I'd love to think that, but all of the things I'm doing are being taught to me by other people on UA-cam!
@@goncalovalle yeah but still. It requires a lot of discipline, patience and love✌️
a tip I saw on another channel: to cover the screws in your cabinet, drill them in a bit deeper, mix saw dust and glue and cover the screw heads, let it dry. Sand and then varnish = no visible screw heads.
Thank you for the tip! Maybe I'll try that in the future!
A suggestion to build a toe kick for the bottom of the cabinet.
Build a frame out of regular lumber that is 3-4 inches shallower than the cabinet. Paint the front edge black. Then lift the cabinet and slide the toe kick underneath, all the way to the back wall. That accomplishes two things; your toes won't kick the front of the cabinet and the counter top will be several inches taller which will suit a tall fellow like you better.
If you have a piece of plywood you can top the toe kick with before you slide it under the cabinet, you will have a bottom shelf and double the storage space.
One last thought; when you finish the cabinet base, put the same material on both sides of the doors. Also, add magnetic hinges at the top and bottom of the doors. Keeping them latched will help them stay straight.
It looks really good! Keep up the great attitude 😊
That's a really good idea, I might give that a go!
Thank you! 🙏
A very nice cabinet…liking the colors👍
Thank you, I like them too, I think it blends in nicely with the fridge and keeps it away from having too much of a modern look. I think my lack of woodworking skills also help with giving it a "rustic" feel 😂
The cabinet looks amazing already, really suits your place. You really nailed the look lol. 👍
Thank you, I'm glad you like it too!
The kitchen cabinet looks gorgeous
Glad you like it!
Your endeavors call for a... attaboy! Great job. Very interesting how you are taking a run-down old shed and turning it into your home. Cabinet looks great, thanks for sharing your adventure.
Thank you! 🙏
There you go! Everything's fixable, right? Nice color (for lightening the space) combo. Sink and stove top next?
Yep, he has those ready to pop in👍🏼.
That's the plan!
💜
nicely done. pushing yourself to keep doing things out of your comfort zone is inspiring!
Thank you, I appreciate that!
nice job!
Thank you! 🙏
On the cabinet door: there is a type of wood treatment that is done prior to being sold for wood projects, doors, windows and jams or frames. In particular, its for the purposes of having wood that does not do what happened here in this project. When ordering wood for such projects ask about kiln dried or K.D. In that the wood is both fully dried in a kiln and its then planed before its made available for sale. This would save the experience you found yourself with. Imagine that its well worth exploring in that some projects can be a much greater investment and take alot more time and then only to find that the wood has not been properly selected and/or treated....Ugh!
I had no idea about this! Thank you for letting me know! I'll definitely be more mindful of the type I wood I get for future projects
Very good. Nice Post.
I am wondering what the background electic motor is that kicks in and out. It does detract slightly from your video presentation and enjoyment of your vlog but not enough for me to skip. 😊
Thank you!
I'm sorry about that, I'm aware of how annoying it is! It's the fan for the inverter of my solar system. I'm working on a way of moving that to a place where it won't be audible in the videos anymore!
Kitchen is amazing. Realy good job👍
Thank you! 🙏
Dont use gloves made from fabric when using a wire wheel , when the drill slips and catches the fibers of the glove it can easily tangle it self in your glove leading to many small jet painful wounds. Worst case scenario you will brake a finger. Leather gloves are much safer.
That's a great tip, thank you for letting me know! It has happened to me before that the gloves get caught up on the drill, which is not fun. I'll try some leather gloves next time!
Small tip: one video of about to ten minutes a week in not going to keep people watching, try more diver content, just saying, keep up te good work 👍
Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it! I'll be more mindful of that for the coming videos!
Hi Goncalo, may I ask where you buy your timber from? I've been to leroy and maxmat and the wood they have there is so bowed and crooked.
Hey! I usually get the majority of it from maxmat! It’s annoying because most of them are twisted and bent, like you say, but I try to filter through the ones I think look the best
Man your story telling composition and editing are nice but your exposure and lightning could improve 🙂
Thank you for the feedback! I’m thinking of a few ways of fixing that for the future!
Top job, Gonvcalo@
Thank you!
