  • Our boy drove all the way home just to surprise his mom and hangout with us for the weekend. The 2nd was World Autism Awareness Day. We should all focus on the things that matter, the things that benefit people in the autism community.

Saw a shirt in a photo thatI want to find. It says," if you can be anything, be kind". Says it all. Went to the market with my brother in law who recentky had back surgery, so I'm his heavy lifter. At the frozen food section he was looking for different burritos and they were all messed up, others having put things not back where they belonged. As he looked through them he straightened them all out, putting like things together then into the correct boxes. Another shopper came by and also was looking for particular combinations and complimented him on fixing the section. He asked her what combinations she liked and what she was looking for and the three of us had a nice conversation. Made our day.

Because of your channel my 9 yr old son understands and accepts people with autism. When we are out and are around anyone who maybe he will just look at me and ask “like Abby” and when I tell him yes he just moves on or tries to help if there is a need. Thank you for doing what you do and I love seeing Abby be so much of a teen 🙂

I love that you are accepting of those with disabilities of varying degrees! I myself am a 30-year-old woman with Cerebral Palsy who works at a movie theater in my hometown. A lot of people just see my wheelchair but they don’t see the person within at and we need to continue to spread awareness of those with not just visible disabilities but also those with invisible disabilities as well.

I have to say I’ve been watching for several years now and I work in childcare, have since 2002, and I had heard of autism but can honestly say I didn’t understand it. Summer also gained weight while living there. I worry about Abbie and her wonderful parents with all that extra weight. Type 2 diabetes is around the corner, and maybe cardio problems. Abby needs you, so take some time to think about the diet. "Differently-abled" literally makes me cringe because you're just trying too hard to be politically correct. Disabled isn't a bad word, and we know that's what you're trying (not) to say. The thing I hate about disability and illness communities is the focus on gatekeeping and speaking for everyone. If anything, that turns people off to whatever message you're trying to spread. Not to mention, it's hypocritical "I want you to accept me, but I have the right to tell you how to live and whether or not you "qualify" as one of us."

Nobody has the right to decide who qualifies as one of us! We are all human beings and need love and acceptance … but sometimes people need help explaining ( those non verbal , and those with inabilities to easily communicate ) the on,y way we all grown and learn and do better is to listen to hear …and not to answer back!

I am an individual with what the world calls a handicap ….but I call myself Handicapable ! Because I need to remind myself that I just have to do things differently …..but to have others call me differently as well is fine ..as long as it isn’t said with a negative connotation….and if it is, that’s that persons problem ….NOT a being nice because of ignorance or just being a bully ..is an even bigger handicap !

Well said let people who can speak for themselves let you know choose how they want to be referred to whether person first or condition first. As long as someone is kind then it makes a world of difference. I read a blog recently from a friend who goes through the same stuff as me and this was what part of the blog was about. She shared how it's about intent and how you say things in a kind manner and that's how we learn rather than just telling others they can't ask questions or demanding someone answer all your questions about their disability but kind to one another and understand that we're not always going to feel like answering for various reasons and on the other hand if done in kindness then don't feel like everyone is being mean in asking questions. Those who ask questions in kindness could very well be seeking understanding and want to support others in the same boat.

I've been a follower of your content for quite a while now and I just felt I needed to say this: I initially had concerns that my youngest son (he was a baby at the time) was autistic. Not knowing anything at all about it I searched on UA-cam and found you guys. Currently I am still working with therapists and doctors to see if there is a diagnosis of autism due to my concerns still being concerns (he is 3.5 now). I must thank you for all the insight you have given me. Alot of the stuff I learn from listening to you talk about autism I have found quite useful in helping my son especially when he is struggling and I cannot thank you enough ❤️
Side note: the squinty suspicious look Abby gave Nala was hilarious 🤣 she cracks me up 🥰❤️

Learned a long time ago that if you try to be someone else you will be a 2nd rate them. You can only be a first rate you so be the best you you can be. Everyone has challenges, they just don't always show if it's not visible. Asthma, lung problems, heart issues, etc. Give your kitty a pet and treat for me! And yes, you are right, Cilla's first reaction is "shut up"!! Love it when Isaiah surprises the family, and us!! So sweet how he loves and interacts with his parents and Abbie. If people would fight for awareness and the rights of people with disabilities as much as they argue about being offended at terms or other things, then we'd get a lot further with having a better world for people with disabilities than we are right now in my opinion. To many people literally focus to much energy on being offended at everything.
I'm disabled, I have special needs and hey I don't care what anyone calls the needs I have. My focus is getting through each day with minimum amount of pain and being a nice person to others.

Ive always wondered about what its like for people with less mild learning disabilities to work and have jobs, and how employers train them and manage their workload. Do only specific businesses hire them? I imagine it would be almost impossible to find the time to train someone with pretty severe disabilities at any of the places i have worked at, mainly because its pretty fast paced and no one has much time to spend one on one with a trainee, so i just wonder how any business would manage that?

When my kids had ear aches they would be tilt their head. Never say a word just tilt the head. Might be a sign of other issues?

Me and my husband both have a learning disability and my husband also have autism
    This is very well explained

I so agree with autism awareness and acceptance. I have autism and made the mistake of telling the people I work with at a therapy center. Once my coworkers knew about my autism they spoke slower to me and repeated things twice. I thought this was just a fluke since it happened once but then it happened again and again. I knew they didn’t understand how to speak to me. My coworkers and my boss spoke to me just fine before they knew I had autism. I wasn’t treated any differently before. Now I don’t tell anyone at work that I have autism.

Just an FYI. You may have to get legal guardianship of Abby when she turns 18. It can be a lengthy process so begin now. I had to get legal guardianship of my guys. My best to your family.

It drives me crazy that people get hung up on terminology when we need to be focused on the needs and the hearts of people. If a person is not trying to be malicious in their wording and you “know” what they are trying to say, go with that.

There’s a song a choir im in sings…and it reminds me of the differences thing,
“ All Gods critters have a place in the choir, some sing low and some sing higher. Some sing out loud on the telephone wire and some just clap their hands or paws or anything they got now..Listen that’s note that the little birds sings on the melody or the high not ringing and the hoot owl hollers over everything and the porcupine talks to himself “ this is only part of the song …but says we all belong here on this turning world …and we all have something to offer!

I think you/we need awareness to then create acceptence, I mean, it's kind of tough to be able to accept something you are not aware of...

Oh my goodness, the terminology minefield is nuts. I have a physical disability and the amount of discussion around what words should be used is just crazy… it’s so divisive and a waste of time. I’m with Cilla, say it with kindness but for goodness sake just say it 😊
