😂 here's some advice from a Caribbean girl to help yall with rice and beans. We are Puertorican and eat rice and beans almost daily: cuz we love it! Pretty much all Caribeans do. Watch videos of how to cook rice and beans "arroz blanco" and "habichuelas guisadas" Puertorican style, Cuban style, Dominican style, even Haitian recipes from actual authentic sources. I am so surprised at so many storing rice and beans but saying it does not taste good and it is just survival food. It is healthy, cheap and delicious! Also you can make rice with chicken in it (can used canned chicken) and canned vegetables to make "arroz con pollo( yellow rice with chicken in it)". You'll need some oil, dehydrated onions, garlic and peppers to taste good, optional dried cilantro and tomato paste/powder. If you have fresh even better, just thinking long term storage. Also favorite spices is Sazon and Adobo.
Natalie Ayala I live on rice and beans so I will look these up thank you 😊
@@ArtyAntics Anything by Sweets and Beyond here on youtube is amazing. She's my go to and she cooks very authentically and step by step.
@@CassieDavis613 I eat rice almost daily, it's not nonsense! I soak my grains for at least 5 hours prior to cooking, changing the water every so often. This opens up the grain so the water can get in and wash out as much as possible.
@@natalieayala2008 thank you!
@@CassieDavis613 Personally I always rinse rice since it also has like broken rice dust and debris. Makes for a less stuck together rice. As for the arsenic I believe it but it is very small amounts and we are exposed to so many other environmental toxins from everywhere. I eat whole foods and practically nothing processed so I am limiting exposure to toxins in other ways. Preety much all Caribbean and most latin countries live off rice and beans vs flour like in the US and Europe. I barely ate wheat and bread growing up. I am not sure but I heard somewhere that organic rice has less arsenic and if you do not eat it everyday it is so cheap that it may be worth to buy organic only. We go through 10lbs a month so it would cost too much. I personally feel there is more dangers in commercial wheat and corn.
On pancake mix: if it’s outdated just add some baking powder and baking soda to get the back. To make sure your baking soda is still good add a little vinegar to a tablespoon and it will foam. Baking powder add a little water to a tablespoon and it should have small bubbles on top. You get the idea, trial & error.
Australia ran out of rice and there was a riot. Do not take rice for granted
What part of Australia ran out of rice please?
@@awake6472 did not mention what part
@@awake6472 Most Australian large grocery stores couldnt keep up the with supply of rice and pasta. It was mostly due to people panic buying and purchasing huge amounts in one go. It got to the point where limits were put into place. We could only buy one packet each of rice, pasta, pasta sauce, frozen vegetables, toilet paper etc. per shopping trip. It wasnt an issue for me because I always have 6 months to 1 years supply of rotated food on hand.
Space saving tip
Pasta + sauce: I use Tomato paste as my base for sauce. I add water and spices. Tomato paste cans take up less space than pasta sauce AND tomato sauce, so I can stock more of other things. Keeps me from stocking pasta sauce, tomato sauce, and crushed tomatoes. Now I just stock diced, rotel tomatoes, and paste.
Would you please share how u make it 🙏 thank you.
@Pearl - I use the McCormick spaghetti sauce mix. But I’m sure you can just add your favorite herbs and spices. Yield is 2 cups sauce.
1 small can tomato paste (6oz)
1-1/2 cups water
3 TBS of McCormick spaghetti sauce Italian herb mix
1TBS olive oil
Stir McCormick Italian Herb Spaghetti Sauce Mix with tomato paste, water and oil in sauce pot until well blended.
Bring to a boil on medium to medium-high (for larger recipes) heat; Cover. Reduce heat.
Cooked to desired consistency: a) For smaller recipe: Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. b) For larger recipes: simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Simmer for 20 minutes for a small batch and 40 minutes for larger batches.
To make a Spaghetti Meat Sauce:
Brown lean ground beef, turkey or crumbled sausage in a non-stick skillet. Drain fat well. Stir cooked meat into sauce mixture during step 1 above. Cook as directed in above recipe.
* Pearl, this is straight from the mix label. In essence, you are making tomato sauce by diluting the paste, then adding seasonings to make your sauce. Sometimes I like to double the recipe, add a can of diced tomatoes, and sneak in other veggies😉 I prefer a thinner sauce.
Thank you! This is brilliant! ❤️👏
GREAT space saving idea!
Having a full pantry of stuff is like have a big emergency fund. It gives you peace of mind. I've never been one for stock piling food. Not even close. I would always joke that my fridge and shelves looked like Al Bundy's LOL.But after what we dealt with back in March with crazy shoppers freaking out like the end of the world is coming and not being able to find the basic foods you need to make a certain recipe. I realized that I should make sure at least now, that I have plenty of the basics. I've not only been stocking my pantry, but also my freezer and even my fridge with certain things that last a long time. It's better to have too much food without an emergency shortage hitting, than assuming nothing will happen and then food is gone and your screwed. Great video.
I grew up hearing about the Irish famine, and having no food during the Great Depession SO... I NEVER let my pantry go empty.
Plus... being a Senior I can not risk wandering around stores as Virus Numbers once again begin to rise.
Better safe than sorry... until there is an effective vaccine I cannot afford to take unnecessary risks.
Drowning slowly in one's own fluids is a lousy way to die... and passing it on to others who then could die is not something I would ever want to be responsible for... so I'm stocking up and staying put.
Please everyone... Stay Safe.
"There" are many people who laughs when I tell them about my full pantry. I love my full pantry and go shopping in my own "shop"🙏
I know what you mean..its security
Problem is when famine occurs you are the first place that they are going to think of. Get a 2nd location that you can go to and defend. If you don't you will experience the 🦀 in the barrel syndrome.
That's awesome!
Yeah, it's always nice also if you are sitting at home and decide you want pizza or a stirfry for dinner and you already have everything without having to leave your house to get the few items for that recipe. Not only stock piling food good for an emergency, but it also makes life more convenient and easy when you have everything you need without leaving your home.
I have my own "store" in our basement too. Have been prepping since 2008. Feel so blessed to have a huge unfinished basement for all our shelves & especially the rotating can shelving from Thrive Life for all the different sized cans...including their pantry sized & the #10 cans as well as regular sized cans from the grocery stores. Bought the rack when it was on sale. Important to keep your "store" well organized & food rotated...just like at a regular grocery store.
Great video, thank you! Please make a video of making the water filter!!
Yes! And where you bought your filters!
Great tips. And if you're hungry, you're not going to care what kind of food you have.
Shoot,,when Saturday came around we were lucky,,to have mustard,, I remember I was so hungry,,to satisfy my pallet,,I ate mustard with a little salt,,and that.worked,,I have dry grasshopper,,,from Mexico,,there delicious,,, relative from Mexico sent it to me ,, I have about 30 bags,,lots of protein..
Actually people do care people starved to death during the great depression because they got sick of eating the same thing. I think its called food fatigue.
Yes amen
@@MysticSunSeed People in Great Britain also starved to death during WWII, when they were sheltering in the subway tunnels during German Bombing raids, for the same reason...
Ghee, clarified butter, also lasts for a very long without refrigeration.
Thanks for this 'list'. My daughter-in-law is going to find food stashed all over the place one day. 🤣🤣🤣
Had to chuckle when you mentioned Spam. My mother used to cook it with pineapple and serve it over rice. That was back in the late 60's early 70's. Awe good times. ha ha ha.
Sounds good.
Sounds good!
In the late 60's, early 70's, my mother would fry it...Sometimes we ate it on sandwiches, and, if we were lucky we got it with eggs...
That was a gourmet meal back in the day.....with pineapple? Yummy!!
....my mother fried up Spam and then poured a can of stewed tomatoes and simmered it. Was very good.we ate it over rice and potatoes.
I went dumpster diving found over 15 package of chilli seasoning. Thanks DUMPSTER 💕.
Get some jars of gravy or packets or gravies...chicken, pork, turkey or beef and some beef and chicken boullion to change the flavor of the rice and beans.
Loving all the shorter videos.I now have time to watch.Blessing💞
The covid caused me to Prep. Next payday I should be around three months prepared. When I'm out of butter, I found that Olive Oil in Mac n Cheese is even better than butter; tastes Italian
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for sharing that tip
I will have to give that a try. Thanks 😊
Freeze your butter
@@teresabeeson7593 I do freeze my Butter; but as a new Prepper, I look for alternatives for when the Power is out, etc. I would use up the Olive Oil faster than it would go bad. Eventually I may start Prepping Ghee; but not yet. I also plan on being a full time Van Life Nomad; a traveling Evangelist (IE a Reverend in an RV). I'm looking for ways to need very little refrigeration...
One thing about Nestle's Quik is that it is really loaded with a lot of extra nutrients and vitamins which will help if food is getting a little short.
And Carnation 👍Bless you all! 😄💖💖💖
We keep the Quik, but noticed in fine print on the side it suggests limiting intake??? Wonder why?
@Erika Vallance Yeah, I used to drink ovaltine cold. It tastes a lot like nestle's quik when you drink it cold and has a bit more vitamins. But that is a good idea to stock up on ovaltine.
I'm not talking about sugar either. The texture is different, so wondering if it has added stuff than long ago? We keep it. That dry milk might need to be chocolified for grandkids....or me.😊
@@tdog4240 because you take too many vitamins and kids can go though a whole lot in a short time.
Thank you for the free e-book!
Thanks for the free dining on a dime cookbook. I have been wanting in but on low income so I haven't been able to buy it. Love you guys.
Second 😊, thanks for posting. We love your advice and biblical referencing.
Great information Also Coffee Beans last longer than Coffee powder. Get a small grinder too. Love the buckets for water. Thanks for the ebook too. I will get that done when I get off from work.
Thank you so much for a wonderful gift Tawra! Not only do you spend all of your time teaching, but now you gift us this as well ... All I can say is thank you for being you ❤️
I'm in PA near Philly, last spring bread was hard to get in our area... and then flour and yeast were gone.We were on lockdown by Gov. Wolf's order, most everything was closed. I had flour and yeast, but when offered a sourdough starter, I grabbed the opportunity. I've been making 1-2 loaves of sour dough bread every week since. No need for yeast! In a long term emergency situation that's another option.
How do you make sour dough bread?
Thank you so much for your generous gift I’m fairly new started prepping around may and this is very helpful💜
Start making beans and rice dishes to get your family into them and work the links out of recipes. Dollar tree had jarred mushrooms and peppers , banana peppers , and olives , all good mixed with rice. I'm getting ready to learn to make Boston Baked Beans and black eyed peas.
We like Spam, too, now and then...helped saved the British during WWII!😊
Some people say to bread it,,spam has to much fat to do that,,but when your hungry,,all have weeds to sustain you,,as long as you really know what your eating,,cactus,,cactus pear,,,, grasshopper,,
Talk to a Hawaiian, they love the stuff. 😂
Spam literally saved Hawaii also!!! That is why they absolutely love it!!! 😁
Great tips Tawra and in case you didn't mention it previously, don't forget a hand operated can opener...in case no power. A church key is great too for opening drinks that don't have a pull tab. Have a Blessed day.
Thank you for the emergency prep ideas! It's beginning to look like we're headed that direction. I ordered your free gift and looking forward to looking at it! Enjoy you all!!
Thank you very much for sharing your book. I know a lot of work went into writing it and I really appreciate your generosity. I also enjoy your no nonsense videos. Your information is great and I am grateful for your help.
Your cookbooks are WONDERFUL! I miss your live shows. But so happy to see you and your sound advice. Love and blessings Tawra! Much love💖
I would love to see a video of y'all putting the water filter together! We live in an RV and I wanted to get a Burley but we are trying to get outta debt so that's a no-go for now! I am amazed that more RV youtubers aren't talking about this kind of filtering system! Pure genius! Y'all always amazed me 😁
Thank you so much for the free cookbook! This is my first visit to your website but I see so much that I know I will be back over and over. I am grateful for your generosity!
Thanks for the update we really appreciate your videos!
Thank you ❤ Some people may laugh at us preppers. Always good to be prepared for anything.
Always appreciate your videos, thank you
Thank you for your kindness. Just watched the video and downloaded book. I appreciate this. I have wanted your books for years now. Thanks again. Great video.
I had to laugh when people would say that dried beans had a shelf life of 6 - 9 months. It's like they are dried people and as long as they don't get wet they will last forever, will they lose nutritional value over time - yes - so the solution is to use from your stockpile and rotate your stock. Back in the olden time I remember my parents serving mashed spam with mayo and pickle relish on a bun to guests! Great advice - thanks for the video,
That sounds delicious! I must try it!
@@pamgordon5051 I've never had beans go bad on me before. Maybe cause I eat them so fast. LOL But for them to go bad, I would think they would have had to be over 10 years old. Canned beans maybe, but I've never heard of dried beans actually going bad.
@@pamgordon5051 l have heard that adding baking soda to the soaking water can soften old beans. A quarter of a teaspoon per pound of beans.
@@pamgordon5051 They don't actually go bad...What happens is that the skins get too tough for water to penetrate...depending on what you're using them for, you can "crack" the skins to get them to soften up, or soak, boil, soak, boil, repeat..
Thank you! Finally feeling the need to prep.
Thank you so much for the free e-book! It looks wonderful. I just ordered the hard copy of your cookbook, volume 2. Looking forward to getting it.

Thank you for your helpful information and the e-book code. I grew up in my grandmother's house where she cooked for many and delighted all. She was a teenager during the depression and I learned so much from her. God bless her. She passed on the survival skills to us all.
Thank you for the book! Will order your vol. 2 book in the future. Great tips!

Wow! What a gift! Thank you - I’m excited to dive into the ebook!
Re: Canned Butter - - If you make ghee, which is clarified butter cooked one step longer to get rid of milk solids, then you will have butter for a year without refrigeration. But if you pressure can the ghee, you will have butter that will keep in an unopened jar for up to 20 or more years. For less than $3 at Walmart, or the more expensive brand from Ireland, you get just under one pint per one pound butter. It smells and tastes like popcorn butter, has a higher smoke point than regular butter and I have even taken to using it like coconut oil on my face which is producing some nice results. Butter itself freezes well - but if the freezer is already crowded with food, canning is a good thing. So, along with my canned beef stews, my canned veggie stews, applesauce and pears, I've added canned butter I made myself. Lots of easy UA-cam tutorials on the web to show you how to do it. It's addictively easy. Also, a pressure canner, though a bit of an investment, is a good tool to have when stocking up. You can make your own soups and stews and meats at a fraction of what it costs already canned at the stores, but have quality control which you can't get when you purchase those already canned. Just a thought.
Thank you so much for the book. ❤️
That plastic water filtering systrm would have been super helpful for our local tornado victims in 2019. Bottled water was donated but wasn't alasys available in large quantities, particularly during the weeks after the initial push for donations. Thanks for posting it!
This is a great list! Thank YOU!
~~~ My dear friend I am glad your putting up this video for people. I pray for your family's happiness and health....GOD'S JOY..
Thank you for the gift. Really appreciate it :)
Thank you so much for the e-book.
Love you Tawra- you a re so generous! I have been enjoying your volume 2, just made muffins today! Having vol 1 in digital form is nice too. Thank you so much. May God richly bless you as you have others :) Excellent list- I would love to see how you make the water filter as well. With six of us, it would be great to have that in a power outage. God love you!
You are so very generous!
Thank you so much for your gift. It was quite nice of you. Very much appreciate it!
Enjoy your videos. Thank you for the book!
Thank you SO much for the e-cookbook! I need to save a bit to get a hard copy.
Thank you for the cookbook!
Thank you for the ebook, I have the book with the spiral spin from a couple years ago, it will be awesome to have the pdf for easy access when Im looking for stuff and meal planning
Thanks for posting the water filter, going to get one of those.
We’ve had our pancake mix for around 2 years, stored in a airtight container and it’s still really fresh
Thank you the free cookbook. I did purchase 1 and 2. This is nice to have on my computer.
Cooking oil. It can only be used for food for a year, but after that you can still use it as a fuel source for liquid candles
I love your attitude. I learn so much and chuckle.
You always give good advice in a calm manner.
Thank you so much for the e book! :)
you mentioned 'rice cereal'. i can remember having this as a kid. there were 9 of us kids and my Dad didn't make a lot of money. we got 'surplus food' and were glad to have it.
thank you for the free ebook. thank you
AMAZING WATER FILTERING IDEA!!
Just started watching your video about stocking up for the next wave of the pandemic, and general stockpiling for emergencies. It was awesome, and I wrote down many of your suggestions. I also took advantage of your very generous offer of the free e-book "Living on a Dime 1". What a generous thing for you to do! I will spend the next few days pouring over it, and setting up some shelves in the basement or garage for storage. New subscriber today, and can't wait to watch more of your videos. I also have a chronic illness, so can relate to you needing the order in your life, to make sure you look after yourself and your family. Take care! A new fan from Canada!
Love your hair. ❤️ also like this format where you sit & talk & educate us.
Thank you for the e-book.
Thank you for the discount code! I just downloaded my copy!
Great list! Thanks! 😊
Thank you for the e book. God bless
Thanks for the great info!
Thanks for the info!
Thanks! Great ideas 😀❤️🙏
Thank you, just downloaded free e-books and I backed them up. very good video
Great information! A dual fuel Coleman camp stove is a wonderful investment. Also candles and oil lamps are a must! After eating rice and beans at a place I work at for about 5ish years almost every day I honestly never got tired of it. I actually looked forward to those meals!
Hi. I’m new to canning, hydrating, and stocking items....great video
Thank you!
Thank you for the E-book! I can check it out now to see if I will order the two hard copies... when the shtf, I know that would really come in handy! 😊😁
Thank you for the free e-book.
Prepare with this kinda stuff, absolutely. Learning how to track, hunt and fish would be much more beneficial.
Have all that stuff thanks for all your videos
Thank you so much!
Brown rice will last a lot longer in you put the bag in your freezer for 3 days, take them out and then bring them up to room temperature, then vacuum seal them.
Thank you so very much!!!!
Can you do a video on making the water filter and the supply for the filter (where to get-name)
I am very interested too. I did not get the brand pls.
You can buy a sawyer mini water filter or lifestraw filter on Amazon pretty cheap. The sawyer will filter 100,000 gallons.
Check the drop down description box, there is an Amazon link for the filter.
Chili on rice is good and more filling or put a chunky beef stew over it. Could add past to both as well. If people are worried about healthy go to whole foods and get the organic or vegetarian version it costs more but if it make you feel better do that. Amazon has lots of bulk items that fit all dietary needs including gluten free.
Love the water bucket idea. 😁
Good things to store!
My husband has been stocking up on Vienna sausage and spam and tuna which last for a good 3 years or more! I thought he was crazy back then but now I'm not so sure. Things are getting crazier and crazier out there! Thanks for a good informative video! God bless you!
Thank you for the free e-book
