One of the other critical components of strength/weight training for seniors, especially those of us with osteoporosis/osteopenia, is that that the weight acts as a load on the bone & actually helps increase the bone density. Marie Fiatrone-Singh has been an early pioneer in the study of gerentology & weight training for seniors as a means of mitigating osteoporosis.

Yes, Cathy, I would agree. Strength training is critical for bone density. Thanks for sharing

Great information about strength training. I am in so much pain, it is hard for me to get off the couch. I will try and force myself to get out into the garden or on my treadmill, or on my recumbent bike to get moving. I do have 2 lbs weights, which I use when on my recumbent bike. Glad you're back - I love your common sense approach. I eat my six prunes daily.

What do you suggest for someone with a hand injury? That seems to eliminate a lot of upper body exercises.

Just wondering here. Maybe you could pull out a Galvarino move? It would work for free weight exercises.
Galvarino was a native American chief (Chile, Mapuche nation), who was captured by the Spanish and set as an example for his rebellious people by cutting off his hands. Afterwards, Galvarino had blades attached to his stumps and kept on fighting the Spanish.
So, maybe that example of sorts can give you some ideas. ✌

Hey Ed! 68 y.o female, strength train to be able to keep lifting my 85 lb. disabled daughter, BUT, what about my stomach pooch! Any videos to help that? Nothing seems to help. Is that a myth, older women can’t have a flat stomach? Thanks!

Thanks for this video. Something I started doing on my 40 minute walks with a weighted vest at my local park is stopping at 3 benches spread out in an even distance at the park and doing 8 push ups, 8 reverse push ups, stomach crunches, and step ups using the back, front and seat of the bench. I feel like it boosts my walk. With the weighted vest on it brings the work out up a notch. Is there anything else I can add to the bench stationary workouts on my walk? I also do weights twice a week as well as biking and hiking. What is better for bones, dumbbells, kettlebells or the weight machines at the gym? Thanks again.

Hello Dina, nice job on the exercise program! You could try adding more reps at the 3 bench stops as you get stronger. May be do 2 sets of 8. And weight machines, kettlebells, and dumbbells are all good, as long as the intensity or weight is appropriate for you and the particular exercise you are doing. Keep it up!

How about this from women." I don't wanna look too buff." No need to worry, you need a very extreme routine and dedicated diet to look like Gina Carano women. Start lifting.
