Well done and good use of the lubricant. Having everything clean before you assemble is a GREAT tip! If going through all of this work, you only want to do it once and your tips help make that so!!!
Great video. The video series is my reference for my engine overhaul, they are very helpful. I have a tip for installing the camshaft, maybe it will help you or others: 1. when the camshaft is in the 4th bearing I put a piece of a cable behind the bearing. (in the direction of bearing 5) 2. if I guide the camshaft a little further into the block, I can use both ends of the cable to lift the camshaft slightly and guide it better. 3. once the camshaft is completely in the block, I can simply pull the cable out.
Thank you! Just keep in mind, you won't get everything out of my videos. I highly recommend buying that book that I reference in the video descriptions to complete the package. Great idea on the camshaft. Sure sounds like it would make the end of the installation much easier!
I would probably give Comp Cams a call. There are a lot of factors when selecting a camshaft. They will ask you all sorts of things like what transmission you're running, cylinder heads, ect. They are very helpful.
Hi Alex, just watched the newest video today on lifters and oil pump priming. When you mentioned Comp lifters, I had to come back to this video and see this Comp cam. That surprised me considering all the quality issues with Comp Cams and lifters. Good luck hope everything works as designed. You should be fine with the hydraulic flat tappet cam and lifters. Thanks for sharing.
Oh I am unaware of so many issues with comp cams. So far so good. This engine has actually been done for several weeks and the car is back in the possession of the owner. But all the more reason to be extra cautious.
Another great video. After all the 289 rebuild has been completed. What engine oil would you use after breaking in. Would you go synthetic 30 weight. Thanks Paul
You're very welcome. It's definitely a lot more. I looked into it for this engine because it was an unknown amount of time to even get a nice flat tappet camshaft. But the rollers were in stock. Ultimately the client was willing to wait since we are doing a lot of other things to his car.
Hey Alf, wondering if you can help me out with some confusion, I followed your video and installed my new cam, is it normal to have 3/16 play in and out? There is currently no lifter in the bores just the cam, am I missing something?
@Alf's Mustang Garage at the moment just the cam is in without the thrust plate, the timming components are also off, it just looked off to me so I stopped till I can confirm everything is still good 👍 thanks for the reply
What company would you recommend for buying a disc brake conversion kit? I’ve heard that Kentucky Mustangs is good and CJ Mustangs are poorly made. I’m not looking for Wilwood, but a one that’s decent and affordable.
Moly lube I only only use for flat tappet camshafts. It has proper break in agents and additives for that first start up that conventional assembly lube doesn't have.
Your the best at classic mustang vids. Been waiting on the 289 rebuild for a while.
Oh awesome! Thank you, I've got a lot filmed just need to time to put the videos together. But my goal is to get a new one out every other week.
I love watching the work you do!
Thank you

Definitely referencing for my 302 rebuild. Thanks for the great content
You're very welcome!

Great detail and visual content as usual.
Thank you!
Awesome vid. Just got my own 65 coupe and plan on rebuilding engine with my pops in the future
Very cool. Welcome to the club.
What a good mild can with a little chop to put in my 289 ? Stock rockers

Can’t wait to see it finished
Awesome, same here!
I always wondered why folks don't install the camshaft with the engine sitting upright on the bellhousing. It makes it so easy.
Awesome Keep up the good work
Awesome, thank you!
Another great video.

Thank you! this is what I would use after the break-in period. I would not use any synthetics. amzn.to/40ej9lF
Good stuff, appreciate the little tips & tricks. I’m debating whether a roller cam with bar lifters is worth the extra expense.

Part 4 coming soon? Enjoying the series!
Yes sir. I have it scheduled for Friday morning. Crankshaft install.
Awesome! I own a 68 with a 289 and finding your channel has been great help with diag.
Oh awesome, thanks, glad you find it helpful.
First thing great videos, using them on my first rebuild. Where did you get the cam holder?
Thank you. I think I left a link in the description for the cam holder.
Get the zinc ready! Thought you might put a k code cam in there! I can almost here it running! What kind of compression is good for the cam?
Great tutorial! Can you share which book Sue to consult there?
Thank you! Here is the link to the book I am using. I hope that helps!

Do you need to know what cam is going in for the machine shop to install the right cam bearing?
Hey Alf, wondering if you can help me out with some confusion, I followed your video and installed my new cam, is it normal to have 3/16 play in and out? There is currently no lifter in the bores just the cam, am I missing something?
That sounds normal if you don't have the timing chain on. Once the timing chain is installed, it should keep the cam up against the thrust plate.
@Alf's Mustang Garage at the moment just the cam is in without the thrust plate, the timming components are also off, it just looked off to me so I stopped till I can confirm everything is still good 👍 thanks for the reply

I've used Leed Brakes multiple times with great results.
is the back of the upper timing gear suppose to touch the cam thrust plate?

Why moly lube on the lobes versus assembly lube?

Hi. I didn't see you fit the end cap.
End cap????
What about the dowel?
It's not installed yet......
