I hope I speak for a lot of no matter what Opeth does or doesn't do any more they're easily one of the best rock/metal bands of the last 30 or so years!
First time I listened to this album
I wasn’t to fussed but now after listening to it a few times I think it’s a masterpiece. Mikael akerfeldt is just an amazing songwriter
Blackwater Park is my favourite album of all time as well. I'll never get sick of listening to it.
Ghost reveries and still life are also masterpieces
This is Easilest the most Experamentive review
Doktor This comment deserves a 4.5 skulls
Doktor He says it twice. Must be legit.🤷♂️
This was easily the most “easilies” in one review.
He's just being "experimentive."
Easily
Immediately, easily, I meant.
Every single review he mispronounces things and carries himself like a child reading Wikipedia. I don’t get it
I fuckin love the mispronounciation... Keep the fuckin prog strong
Hell yeah! Checked it out last night and relistening to it for my coverage. Super stoked to see what Banger's thoughts of it are, per usual!
my 2 favorite opeth records are still life and black water park hands down two very beautiful and incredible records ever
I used to think that Blackwater Park was objectively their best album but whenever I listen to Still Life I am tempted to change that opinion. My personal favorite will always be Ghost Reveries though!
Still Life and Ghost Reveries for me!
Still Life will always be their best but i'm hopeful that its good
Incredible album. Their most cohesive record post Watershed. They have perfected the sound they were experimenting with on this album. Love it!
I've seen them 8 times already. The Ghost Reveries in its entirety tour was the best! N I remember hearing Blackwater Park live ! Miss those years
I purchased the Swedish version, since that is the album as it was originally imagined, and I love it so far. Only listened to it 3 times so far, but it will stay on my playlist along with the new Tool and new Soen.
Buy both.
I've been really looking forward to Dylan reviewing this!
I love Pale Communion so much and I think that with this new album the band finally find their way into this new era. One of the best albums of the year and of Opeth's career. Masterpiece!!!
I can see and respect the level of musicianship that is required to create such an album. That being said, almost nothing since and including Heritage clicked it for me. The past 4 Opeth album to me boil down to: "Eternal Rains Will Come" - definitely the best track they've made after the Watershed album. Then there's the beautiful, very Jethro-Tull-esque "Will O The Wisp" off the otherwise soulless Sorceress album. And last but not least, the title and opening track on Heritage is a beautifully crafted piano and contrabass intro. It's not only the growls I'm missing, it's the overall credible contrasts between aggression/brutality and sheer melancholy/beauty, the elevating and almost classical compositions of tracks like Harlequin Forest, April Ethereal, Heir Apparent, The Drapery Falls and countless other pre-Heritage tracks. I see there's many new fans Opeth found with that style change. I couldn't be sadder to say, but they've lost me on the way. The new stuff I just cannot connect to, and trust me, I've tried over and over and over the past years for dear love of what this band has created previously.
Your comment is sheer poetry....couldn't put it in any other words. Hit my sentiments precisely. Aker. has become such a pompous, unlikable individual, topping the music turning on it's fanbase.
I try and listen to the new stuff as well. I dont like it. I like everything up to WATERSHED. That's fine, they gave me years of great albums I still play all the time. If I go to an Opeth show is it going to be the new stuff?
I agree, it's not just because he doesnt growl.
The new album is my Blackwater Park of the new era so far. Absolutely brilliant stuff on it.
Agreed. This record is fantastic.
Been an Opeth fan for so many years, I saw them on the BlackWater Park tour, This album is by far the Best stuff they have put out since watershed. Great Album.
I fucking loved this band. That perfect balance of prog rock and death metal was pioneering, no one was doing it, NO ONE!! And in my opinion that's what made this band unique. I feel they're a completely different band after they stopped infusing their music with death metal. Still a fantastic and talented band, but 180º different.
And yes, Axenrot is criminally underrated.
Let's hear this new effort.
I know, but still ... He's owed credit due. He should be up there with Portnoy, Haake, Adler, Kolias.
I drive 8 hours everytime opeth is in Toronto from northern Ontario...I caught one of axe's sticks and two of akesson's picks...they are unbelievable live, il never miss a show....now in terms of the record it's a 9.9/10 for me easily album of the year I'm all for the new sound but bing the superfan I am I will always hold a place for the growls and hopefully even just as embellishments they show up someday on future records to spice things up a bit.......highly recommend seeing these guy and buying this album, I'm getting it in both Swedish and English AND have decided to add the house on the cover to my opeth back tattoo (now a mix of still life black water park and ghost reveries)
This is definitely my favorite from the new era. I needed this after the snooze fest that was Sorceress.
Are you serious? Theres some beautiful moments in this, it's hardly a snooze fest. I appreciate the title track is just ok but it's a pretty damn good album. Saying that In Cauda Vevenum is a contemporary masterpiece
Opeth rocks.
So good! The drumming is really great overall, and I like the way they play "difficult" songs and not showboat it. It just works! It has been a good day.
Saw them 5 times, the special thing is that the setlists take from my arms to sorceress yet they always sound very cohesive. The opeth touch runs through their discography indeed
Hey Dylan, I was also at that Opeth show with Enslaved opening 👍🤘
My favorite albums are: Deliverance, Morningrise, Blackwater Park. I respect what they're doing now but I miss where they were.
notwastd on all my years on the internet I’d say that is the most Unfunniest thing I’ve ever heard
My personal favorite was Still Life.
Can't wait to get my copy ... Hopefully soon I did an pre order .... One of my favorite bands ... I do miss the DEATH edge, but still a great band ....
Is 'experimentive' even a word? Isn't it experimenTAL!?
It's either experimenTAtive or experimental, yes.
OK - I'm not the only one ...
Moar importantively: "guitarar" and "dis-o-raphy"
Experimentive isn't a word
@@neuroticandroid Experimentative is indeed a word. Look it up.
The Intro is very Tangerine Dream influenced. Totally took the synth sound.
Agree. This is already my favorite of the clean vocal albums..
Would love to see you review the new Voyager album when it's released on November 1st
This Opeth's best in a decade, i'm enjoying every song a lot. The only complaint that i might have, is that Åkerfeldt's vocals are a little too intense sometimes, even if the song is not.
this to me is Opeth's **DArk Side Of The Moon**....well done ,,,well done......
Agreed
Well that infers that it is their most lauded and respected work which is just not true.
@@Evan_Schaefering not yet
@@kin3tic0n37 Probably never
@@Evan_Schaefering Honestly in my eyes it's their most ambitious and versatile work yet, and yes, I hated it when I first listened.
I know this is off topic, but thank you Dylan for introducing me to Cynic. I've been blasting Focus, Kindly bent to free us, and traced in air for the whole year(up until Tool put out Fear Inoculum, so I'll be hooked on that for awhile)just wanted to acknowledge the T shirt 😁
Album of The Year candidate
But, Pale Communion > In Cauda Venenum >> Sorceress >>>>>>>>>> Heritage for best Post-Death Metal album by Opeth.
Pale Communion really hit the sweet spot
Pale Communion is honestly dogshit. It may be the most boring album I have ever heard, no hyperbole. Well ok, maybe that Storm Corrosion side-project with Steven Wilson was more boring. But PC is a close second.
Best since Watershed, my favorite record of the year.
Evan Moyer Interesting. I can’t wait to hear it.
Pale Communion Is My Favorite Opeth since Ghost Reveries. Also, have you heard of Soen's new album called Lotus?
This album is breathtaking! Death Metal Opeth was a fantastic ride, but they were never this free it seems! If this is not the BEST the band has ever done, it certainly has to be argued that it is the most ambitious and creative! MASTERPIECE!
Holy shit, this may just be the first prog album that I actually enjoyed listening to! Great review.
One of us! One of us!
Haven't listened to Opeth since Deliverance, which is strange because I liked it a lot. Maybe I was just consumed by other genres and never got back to them. I'm going to rectify that.
I looked up "experimentive" because you used it about 5 times in this review. Figured it was a Canuckian derivation of experimentative or experimental, but that doesn't appear to be the case. You just made that shit up! 🇨🇦
the amazing high pitched scream he does on Universal truth is so amazing!!
The artwork is straight 1973 Jethro Tull.
Saw them in 2014. Awesome show.
This album is fucking historical. It already took the place
For me this album is a true masterpiece and probably part of the best albums of all time. Or maybe i just enjoyed it too much
Yup you enjoyed it too much, it's not that good.
You need to get out more.
I have the same opinion as you. I am really enjoying it.
Joakim did not play on Heritage (that was still Per Wiberg). This is his THIRD album with the band.
This album is the one that brings me back to Opeth. Heritage and Sorceress didn't chub me up, but this one gives me rampant turgidity like Arms/Hearse or Blackwater Park. Solid 5/5 skulls for me.
Love the shirt! Can you do a review of all of Cynic?
Great review, I agree it's the best album of the new Opeth era
The album is released today and tomorrow is my birthday. I will listen to the album tomorrow and it will make my birthday great :)
dydy0928 happy late birthday! A great gift
I own and listen to every studio album.
My top two are Ghost Reveries and In Cauda Venenum.
I love all of their albums.
I wholeheartedly welcomed their Prog Rock move.
I loved the new album but Pale Communion is the best opeth album from the new era.
Honestly In Cauda Venenum is as good
agreed
"Vevenum" 😂😂😂
I love 70's prog rock so I like this album
i like that they keep evolving their sound. pöbeln / the mob is the highlight track for me
really enjoying the album!! Borknagar new album is good as well
Not even a shout out to Mordial, by Car Bomb :´(
Facundo viscarra Yeah that surprised me. Was hoping for a banger to send out the week. Well perhaps it'll make an end of year list?
Not proggy enough for this guy.
@@bcg6760 seems like more of a brad thing. hopefully not dissapointed
I love it. It might feel a little early for me to give it a 5/5, but it just rocks so hard I have a feeling I'm gonna end up with that rating. So far the...I guess I'll call them "atmospheric" elements...they haven't gotten in my way of enjoying it, so I'll see how I feel after giving it some time.
Can’t wait to see you on tour. You’re SO charismatic. Hoping your conversations are just as stilted and awkward in real life.
Will you review Borknagar? It's incredible.
Mikael Akerfeldt is probably one of the most if not THE most talented musician alive.
*cough
Steven Wilson
*cough
Hevy Devy's more so
lol
MicShazam yeah I know, but how many musicians are capable of writing co many complex yet catchy songs as Mikael. Steve Wilson is also a great example.
Right next to Steven Wilson and Devin Townsend those three are geniuses!
I mean it's Opeth. It's a masterpiece as I was anticipating!!
Personally I think this album is their best since ghost reveries.
Joe Yuzwa Is the recording/mastering as good as Ghost Reveries?
Great to know! Haven't heard it yet but Ghost Reveries is easily my favorite from them
Hessian peel is amazing tho.
Agreed.
Yep
I love this album
I loved Sorceress, this album and I have Still life album.
5:47 this makes me think Dylan is younger than I thought lol
Derek Albert Yeah he sucks
@@matthewdevon1923 not what I was meant at all but ok, heh
Derek Albert he isn’t very good. No personality. No passion. His reviews are more like fact sheets and press junkets than actual reviews
@@matthewdevon1923 Yea I know though I am not all that surprised based on what he likes Haha. I just meant that if his first metal concert was in 2008 then he is likely younger than I thought he was.
Hey I was at that show too, nice.
Axenrot's best performance was Porcelain Heart, it was when I realized he was the right replacement for Martin Lopez
Why this video is in an undeniable hurry?
And sorceress is the most beautiful album on earth.
Also is there a Vinyl release out there with both Swedish and English tracks on either side?
I think In Cauda Venenum might be objectively equal or better than Pale Communion, but I guess because I've hear the latter a thousand times since its release, I still like it better. But ICV is fucking amazing.
I agree blackwater park is my favoritealbum ever too
I think this should be the way a new album should be reviewed. You have to ask yourself this question: If you were about to see this band play live in concert, would you want any of these news songs to be played? Or would you rather that they played songs from the older albums?
Agree 100% about Ax… amazing drummer … top 10 in the world … my top at least.
You're my fav reviewer Dylan
Thank you very much!!
Funny, he's my least favorite. That's saying something when his company is clowns like Martin Popov.
@@HomeOnDeranged funny, I didn't really ask
This review was so experimentive
Amazing album
Nice t-shirt!
One of the best bands ever
As you were reaching below to pull out Blackwater Park, I was so disappointed when it was a CD and not a vinyl.
I can’t stop staring at that Focus tee.
One may even say that you're focusing on it too much.
Review of actual new album starts at 3:19
Please have someone review Alter Bridge's Walk The Sky which comes out in mid October
uh hello? morning rise??? you forgot orchid also.
Anchorman reference at the end? Noice.
Opeth : 1989-2008
Prog Åkerfeldt : 2008 - 2019
Couldn't agree more Opeth died after Watershed :(
Fr, i've easily listen to the whole last album some 25 times or so, almost trying to force myself to find somethig i like ..... I cant, i jut cant, i cant sing anything from it, there is not one song nor melody on it i recall, i hate it, the worst out of the prog rock wannabe era, also, i hate how busy it sounds, is a bad yes, king crimson, rush wannabe album imo, which i think may be also why i cant fnd anything on it i like, cause i am a heavy king crimson, rush, yes listener lol, and this album doesnt get there, it tries hard, but doesnt get there, and that makes it cringy for me
Except Mikael wrote everything alone from the beginning. He has said the only reason he didn't go full prog before is because he wasn't confident enough. The last 4 records are just as much Opeth as the rest, and some of them are better than some of the earlier work.
@@johnsmith-pw7oj Well you clearly don't know shit about music and have a bad taste in it.
Best thing about this review is your shirt ❤️ Anyway, I gave this album a chance, they still sound to me like generic prog nostalgia, instead of the unique, outstanding metal sound they used to create. Also, I really hate the sound production here. Still, looking forward to catch their live performance again.
Love the Cynic shirt❤
Great review... I don't think it's Better than Pale communion tho :(
Experimentative is a word guys according to Merriam Webster-having the characteristics of an experiment
Thank u Dylan. Opeth is Opeth, cero mistakes!
Dont miss the growls. At all. Opeth is the biggest Prog band in the world!
Great review but were the hell is the Korn and Exhoader review for real
"Experimentive" isn't a word.
k nerd
People should pay attention to the lyrics to this album. Def. His best.
Personally I live the talking and laughing in the background. Makes the album its own
I fucking love this album
Followed them since My Arms...I love the journey they're on. One of the greatest modern bands. Caught them on the Deliverance tour in Montreal..Paradise Lost opened up...and the audience weren't having it (they were in their full on electronica kind of thing) Nick Holmes called the audience cunts
experamentive is not a word
Äkerfeldt says the Swedish version is the correct one, but I think his vocal performance is better in the English version. Go figure! One of THE GREAT rock albums. Amazing record. 🤘🤘🤘
I cant wait to dive head first in this album!!! I didn't care for Heritage or Pale Communion AT ALL!!! Sorceress was not bad, but still not Watershed!!! Ive been waiting for a new album from them for so long!!
This is an amazing year for Prog.
Indeed!!
I don't use the word "easily" much, but when I do, my name is Dylan Mcgowan. ;)
Starting to grow very bored with Opeths new style. I've been quite open minded to it but I start to feel that it's just not enough from an Opeth album for me.
Have a nice weekend eveyone.
I still think Pale Communion is better (especially in terms of production) but I agree, this is a complex and extremely well crafted prog record that must be listened to many times to be fully appreciated. Btw, listen to the Swedish versions, it gives it even more flavour and it's nice to hear Akerfeldt in his mother tongue. Besides, he said himself this was the "true" version of the album.
