How to sync your Win10 laptop PC time using ICOM IC-705 GPS receiver, quick and easy!

- This video is all about one question: how to get your Windows 10 64-bit laptop PC internal clock synced with the precise time signals when you are out in the fields with your Icom IC-705 transceiver but with no Wi-Fi and no cell phone coverage. The answer is in the transceiver itself! It's an IC-705 GPS function which allows for transmitting received GPS data in its built -in GPS receiver to the computer via the single USB cable.
It does take two easy set-up steps on the radio and also a dedicated Windows 10 app which would use the GPS signals to control the laptop's clock. I used a BktTimeSync app by Italian amateur radio operator Mauro IZ2BKT. The app is free and could be downloaded through the website at
www.maniaradio.it .

Thank you for the video. This was very helpful and this method using the BktTimeSync app also seems to work if you're using other QPR transceivers w/o GPS (like the Xiegu X5105) , and you have a tablet or laptop with a built-in GPS receiver. As you so helpfully pointed out, selecting the proper COM port for the GPS receiver is key! 73!

The GPS TX MODE is only for transmitting your location via DSTAR, either NMEA (GPRS) or DPRS (Digital version of APRS). The GPS out is fixed to NMEA on the second COM port (705 B in device manager on your PC) so there is no need to change GPS TX MODE if you are just updating a PC clock. 73, Mike G1ZRN.

Well presented. Got me started to work FT8 in the WWFF program, as I don't usually run or like Windows. I mostly run Linux. IC-705, 10W and a little laptop, perfect for FT8 in a National Park or a Nature Reserve. I had a problem trying to reconfigure BktTimeSync for the IC-705 with GPS. I couldn't get to the Configuration page, as I did not realise the program was already running minimised in the system Task Bar. Thanks to your video, I found my mistake. I now start in manually from a shortcut. 73 44 vk2byf.

I wish I had seen this earlier today. I was on a POTA /Field Day with my 705 and could not sync the time on computer with the radio. My hike back to the car I kept thinking “why didn’t Icom make it so I could sync the gps with my computer...”🤦🏻♂️

Thanks for sharing this method using BktTimeSync app, this was using usb cable between 705 and laptop. I will have to try if this gps info will transfer to laptop via WLAN connection and Icom remote software??

Hi Tom, I'm not sure what you mean by "apple QSX" ? If you mean macOS and transceiver CAT control, there are some apps on the market, like multi-platform Fldigi, or jLog, Grig and probably many more. I don't have mac so I have no experience of my own. I only use iPadOS and iOs with my iphone and ipads, unfortunately, for these OS there is no way whatsoever, to my knowledge, to connect a radio for the CAT functionality. If you mean, if there is a way to use the IC-705's GPS streaming feature to time sync your mac computer, I think , no, there isn't. But again, I'm not a macOS user and not following the trends there. If anybody reading this are knowledgable apple users, and know the situation Tom is interested in, please leave a comment here, it would be interesting to know! 73! Linas LY2H

Sorry for you! But the good news is it locks on the sattelites very nicely in the open air and still good from inside the car. So you not gonna get lost while activating a park :)! 73! Linas LY2H (ex ON4BHP :)) .

Do I need a special usb cable to connect my IC-705 to my old Dell laptop ? And do I need the Icom RS-BA1 software befote I can link them together ?
I've contacted Icom UK and they will not sell the software on its own... They only sell it with the remote... for over £260!!! 🤔

Thanks for watching! Well, I'm afraid I can't help you with the pricing of Icom remote software :(( I wish it were much cheaper or for free with a new radio. Good news is you don't need this software if you only want to connect your radio to your laptop with the USB cable. The only thing to ensure is that the cable ( micro USB to USB A) is for data transfer, not just for charging. It's also good to buy one of good quality, shielded etc. to reduce possible RF issues on to your computer. It's also essential to have the right Icom drivers installed on your laptop. I'm not a computer expert, so I can only recommend to read and follow the Icom's official user manual on drivers depending on the Windows version you have. Hope, this helps! I'm not in the position to give any official technical consultations, so I only share my own experience with my own equipment. YMMV! Will the GPS function send data over the WAP of the IC 705 or must you use the USB connection only?
Hi, thanks for a good question! As far as I know, the GPS streaming through the USB (B) port on IC-705 is only functional via the USB cable. It’s a pitty there is nothing about it in the manuals. 73! Linas LY2H
@@Linas_LY2HWell, I guess you will just have to plug the USB to synch and then disconnect if you want to use WAP. I have to do that now anyway to synch with my WIFI first, disconnect and then connect to WAP. The synch will generally hold for the radio session and not get out more than 1 second.
