I just started last week using a 3-element 2m beam and a UV5R. I succeed in making an exchange half the time. I upped my game with a 50W mobile rig and get a QSO with nearly every pass. N2YO has a great finder app.
Actually, the 50W rig is overkill. I can win the war over the capture effect on the repeater but that's not cool. I'm sticking with the HT, but added an arrow antenna which made a massive difference. Pro tip - do the overnight passes. Prime-time passes are almost worthless. Everyone jams everyone.
UA-cam's auto translate is so annoying! For german speakers this video is titled similar to "Listen to the International Court Railroad-Station Amplifier with I Com IC-705." Please just leave it untranslated.
Managed a QSO once on the ISS repeater here in the UK. Very early on after the announcement of the repeater, passes were at around 2am local time. Made an almost complete contact with a chap not more than 5 miles away :-/ He was fading out a lot, so I know he wasn't transmitting on the downlink frequency lol. No luck since though, passes are currently early evening, so everyone is trying
I'm facing the same issues as you do: quite easy to hear the repeater on an omni but not possible to work over it, even at high power. Part of the issue is the unfortunate frequency selection: the downlink is quite close to the 3rd harmonic of the uplink, so when you transmit using a multiband trx into a single antenna, the receiver is desensed by the 3rd harmonic of the transmitter and the noise shoulders around the transmit signal. This makes it difficult to hear yourself back in realtime, and thus it is difficult to call between all the others. Probably it will be a lot better with a small portable yagi (similar to the Arrow) which has more isolation between the 2m and 70cm antennas, and more gain on the downlink (so a stronger wanted signal vs the unwanted interference)
Hey Hayden - I have worked the ISS several times. It's easy to hear with an omnidirectional antenna, but not so easy to TX and make it in without a Yagi. I use a handheld Arrow Yagi 2m/70cm and two radios - so I can hear myself on the downlink. Another ham about 100 miles away actually captured one of my QSO's here - ua-cam.com/video/czIzlI32dYA/v-deo.html (I'm KI4ASK in Atlanta). It's gotten quite popular here in the US and has become hard to find an opening to get in. Anxious to try it with my new 705. I'll probably use that for RX and another radio for TX. Keep up the good work and thanks again for having us on your show a few weeks ago. 73 de KI4ASK & KI4HHI
here it's almost impossible to establish any kind of contact, everybody step onto each other and there is no order on who is calling who... everybody shout their call sign and most of the time, the repeater cut... It is pretty much the same story on all FM satellite repeaters... linear transponders on the other hand is way more pleasant, stations take time to exchange a little bit other than just their locator... the only thing I have notice on linear transponders is that many users use way too much power and drain the power for the rest of the bandwidth... other than that, I prefer by far using the linear transponders... I wish there was one on ISS...
one of the difficult pge errors is the 3 phase ground. usually a lightning strike can go nowhere. but the ground enables the charge to travel?? see "pge wiring errors" on youtube
Good video - ISS is a bit of a dog pile at the moment as soon as it comes over the horizon even here in VK6 where there aren't as many punters trying to get in. Give it a few months and it will calm down a bit. Also lots of stations just hammering watts up to it so they drown out everyone else
Hi, please guide me🙏🏻🙏🏻🌹🙏🏻🙏🏻 What is PL? Because I can't find it in my walkie talkie, which is Baofeng UV9R Plus And what is Doppler? I guessed that PL is the same as R-CTCS(revive) or T-CTCS(for transfer), but I don't know what Doppler is and which is the option in my Baofeng walkie talkie. I am from Iran and I want to communicate with the International Space Station. And I had another question, When I want to send my voice to start communication with ISS What dialogue should I say? I saw that you repeated this dialogue several times to start the connection: Mk3 vk3 whiskey whiskey whiskey of the hotel hotel k7 5757 But I did not understand the meaning of these words, please explain.
PL stands for "private line" which is an old term for CTCSS. Doppler is the frequency change that is apparent as a moving object transmitting (the ISS) passes over a stationary receive object. If you wish to communicate via the ISS repeater just simply announce your callsign and call CQ via the ISS.
Hi, Welcome to the hobby. You might even hear the ISS on a handheld at the correct time/when the ISS passes over. Even a cheap Baofeng might hear it - but you'll probably need a better antenna to get in and make a contact. Good Luck
@@HamRadioDX thank you so much and can i connect a long antena in handheld radio to make an contact or should i buy a big transmitter to do that ? because literally no one knows that this is possible in my country i think im the only one lol so that i can make a contact without any issue
change to filter 3 much better signal never use 1 unless a very strong signal. i made this mistake myself with the 9700 hated the radio as a result but then i changed to filter 2 then 3 and the radio really came to life and i have made a few sat contacts with far from the best antenna system also made this mistake with the 7000

Nice try Hayden, I appreciate you showing it even if you didn't get in to the repeater.
Thanks Harry!

Yes hopefully I can have another go soon using a small dual band yagi
Love the shirt! I'm based here in Portland, OR. Keep up the great content! :)
Thanks Vega for the comment! Glad you like the shirt!
Better luck next time Haydon.
It's would have been handy if the 705 had the AFC function of the 9700, but horses for courses.

Thanks for the comment Joe. I’ll continue to persist and get a better antenna. The Arrow is the go to antenna I think

Exactly, this is why I haven't even tried.
Do like I bet a few guys are doing, run circular polarized Yagi's with 100+ watts! LOL Who cares right? Anything goes these days it seems.
