Composting in Small Communities

For my composting needs I do collect leafs in the autumn and I use it for the heaps I create all the year long. I don't have enough trees in my garden so I ask my neighbours for their leafs as well. Leafs brake down much faster than wood chips. Regarding woodchips (i put it on a layer of very thick cartoon) - I use it mainly to cover patchs to stop weeds from growing.

Hi I am a fellow earth lover and I have a question here in my country ( Philippines ) we have so much rain fall every year and most of the time my compost gets wet would that affect the decomposition time and how should I minimalize the methane out put . Thanks

Hi Eduardo, thanks for your question. Yes, in rainy climates you may consider putting a cover on the compost pile, either a permanent cover such as a roof or a breathable cover over the pile that will shed the water but still allow the pile to breathe. Too much water in the pile can definitely slow the process, and may result in some methane emission in larger piles!
