I searched for a video explaining this, a gauge on circular needles, and your video was excellent. I am not sure why others couldn't explain it so precisely. Great job!
I don’t typically count the cast on row. It really depends on the pattern, some people consider it the cast on row And don’t include it as the first row. I think as long as you’re consistent with it you should be fine
I don’t understand, I thought swatches were 4in by 4in why are we making it bigger than 4in? I’m fairly new to knitting but I’ve been crocheting for a while so I decided to try this and this seems so confusing to me. Are there things I should learn before making swatches? I know how to do all the stitches for it but I’m just not understanding the sizing
You need it to lay flat and you want to make sure you have enough stitches that you can measure. You don’t want to measure exactly 4 inches because the edges could be curled and in accurate usually the first stitch is looser
Does different stitches translate to different gauges? I’m trying to establish my gauge by swatching in garter to understand my style and I’ve been wondering this for a while!

Nubie here...do you count the cast on as row 1 or start counting after the cast on ?

Yes different sts will result in different gauge. If you’re trying to find gauge for a garter stitch? That’s what you should knit (garter stitch)
