  • Pro-slavery advocates in the south argued that wage labor in northern factories was more oppressive and less free than slavery in the south. This was not true, but it shows how seriously they believed that the slave system was a positive good.

The argument I'm sure was made in good faith by some, but the majority, knowingly or not, were deceived by their own desires.

The only time I ever hear people comparing wage labor to slavery is when those people want to get paid for merely existing.
Obviously conditions for workers were bad during the early industrial age, but they were better than they had been before industrialization, and they've improved a ton since then, and will continue to improve.

It's a job description. We had a creek near us called " cesspit watercourse", the city changed its name to " tranquil waters" and rich people live there. 8 year old Indian girls work in sweatshops, but they are free , definately not slaves, they can leave their jobs anytime they like. Their employer doest provide food, shelter, or clothing , just, 12he days, 6 days a week and all the freedom they want
    .

You have a good title and a great topic. It sounds like you're talking about the pre civil war era but i have been saying this for YEARS, that most people voluntarily have begun choosing to be in the slave class in our country in the modern era by being emplyees rather than self employed. Dependency on "the man" is high and potential has been sapped from their very souls. The risks of freedom are there but the reward is greater; yet the masses have chosen to forego their liberty to place their reliance on corporate employers.

I don't think there's much choice involved. That's actually the point.

Everyone cant be a business owner and not everyone wants to.
My father whos a retired entrepreneur constantly talks about how he wished he had just worked a normal job and had a 401k.
You like to demonize corporations but they are the only people providing good jobs for working class people. Small businesses are the worst places to work. There are not benefits and nepotism runs rampant.
      Basically youre full of it.

@jonbrandon6793 The idea that you don't have a choice is pure falsehood. You're only limited by your own mental capacity and appetite for risk, both of which are nobody else's fault.

Comparing wage labor to slavery is wrong. We have a choice. Slaves did not.

Slavers were arguing that you should give up your freedom for better treatment. Classy.

The amount of times i say this to people who complain about wages, then they say to me that they need the job/money and have no choice.

@@Zeo-yl9pd they're not wrong though. Wage labour is strictly better than slavery, no doubt, but it's still binding 1/3+ of your lifespan to a profiteer, in exchange for often just enough to get by.

It is very much NOT true that 'often' wages are just enough to get by. Slaves truly did get subsistence, just look at what George Washington fed his slaves and how he clothed them. That was subsistence. Basically no one who works a job is'just getting by in America and most of Europe.@@alexjeffrey3981
