Amazing machines. People just don't realize how large they are until they get near them (videos don't do them justice). It took us what seemed like 5 minutes to pass one (going the opposite direction) in our commercial fishing boat.

TI Oceania 16.5 knots partially loaded, slows down to 17.5 when fully loaded?

I remember Seawise Giant couldn't go through the Suez Canal which made their trips limited, just one of the main reasons she went out of business.

Thermodynamics is harsh indeed: one day soon the oil required to sustain an oil tanker in operation, end to end, will exceed the energy in the oil shipped by the tanker.
At that moment, the tanker should halt operation, despite still fully functional and intact - by Physics.
Humans should be grateful to nature that the Middle East has no coal or iron ore deposits within its close geography.
This will ensure very little oil will remain in the ground for making some life-critical medicine in the future - safe from the dirty hands of our foolish, outgoing Western Civilisation.
"Crude oil is much too valuable to be burned as a fuel" - Kenneth S. Deffeyes
"In any system of energy, Control is what consumes energy the most.
No energy store holds enough energy to extract an amount of energy equal to the total energy it stores.
No system of energy can deliver sum useful energy in excess of the total energy put into constructing it.
This universal truth applies to all systems.
Energy, like time, flows from past to future".

Actually oil tankers are not needed. Countries with oil could just keep their own oil and be energy independent. Never having to be dependent on anyone else for energy. sale something else besides your oil.

And,, so, where do countries without oil get their energy needs? Don't say wind and sun. Ask Europe how much they need petroleum products when they were partially cut off from Russia supplies. As to the countries with oil, how would they pay for the petroleum industry if they didn't sell overseas. Their populations aren't big enough to support a petroleum industry, so they wouldn't have any oil for their citizens.

@@kybble In other words , they will have to buy it from countries that have more petroleum than they need. Which is what we have now.
