They're not cicadas. Just Florida's giant grasshoppers.

  • While Brood X cicadas are getting all the attention this year, Florida’s annual swarm of Eastern Lubber grasshoppers have already emerged.
These little black eating machines are young and hungry, and are slowly growing into giant, colorful adults. Lubbers are one of 70 species found in Florida, and they are big and destructive. Lubbers are the largest grasshopper in North America, growing to 4-inches long, and are native to the southeastern United States.
Their appetite lasts throughout the spring; in summer the adults lay their eggs underground. The young hatch and emerge the following year to start the cycle anew.

Got a 4 incher that’s been on top of my umbrella for a week. I have been feeding him lettuce and it always stares so hard at me like I’m the insect 😂. He can stay as long as he likes, I’m in a rental 😂

one time, i saw an adult Lubber Grasshoppers on one of the doors of my school, valencia college in orlando florida.
it caught my eye.. just sitting there, doing nothing. i tried to move the grasshopper on a leaf i found, so i can get it back into the bushes but it wouldn’t budge. :(

I just learned so much! A couple months ago two swarms of those little black ones were jumping everywhere in my yard, then gone like the night. Now the grasshoppers are around. Didn't know they were harmless. Always seems curious of me when I'm gawking at them lol

When I first saw them here in Central Florida, I assumed they were locusts. A quick Google search revealed them to be Lubber grasshoppers.

I surgically use pesticides that say they kill grasshoppers. If I see them, I try to spray only them so I don’t kill anything else. I’d leave them alone if they didn’t destroy plants so damn badly.

A few years ago a gardener came over and likely brought some on these guys on his equipment. Over a few years they began showing up in mass in my backyard. I killed hundreds, and I truly mean hundreds. To me they are so nasty all stacked together creeped me out. So it was me and my machete. Every one i saw i would knock it off its plant and finish it off. Hit it with a shovel, slash it with a machete, step on it. After a few weeks their numbers trickled until a few springs later. Gone. I can now once again peacefully walk around my backyard barefoot.
