They're not cicadas. Just Florida's giant grasshoppers.

- While Brood X cicadas are getting all the attention this year, Florida’s annual swarm of Eastern Lubber grasshoppers have already emerged.
These little black eating machines are young and hungry, and are slowly growing into giant, colorful adults. Lubbers are one of 70 species found in Florida, and they are big and destructive. Lubbers are the largest grasshopper in North America, growing to 4-inches long, and are native to the southeastern United States.
Their appetite lasts throughout the spring; in summer the adults lay their eggs underground. The young hatch and emerge the following year to start the cycle anew.

Got a 4 incher that’s been on top of my umbrella for a week. I have been feeding him lettuce and it always stares so hard at me like I’m the insect 😂. He can stay as long as he likes, I’m in a rental 😂
one time, i saw an adult Lubber Grasshoppers on one of the doors of my school, valencia college in orlando florida.
it caught my eye.. just sitting there, doing nothing. i tried to move the grasshopper on a leaf i found, so i can get it back into the bushes but it wouldn’t budge. :(
Just saw one today in Orlando. I was like WTF is that???
I live in Orlando and I see these all the time. I always thought they were locusts.
Locusts are a type of grasshopper so you weren’t wrong
Lol they are pretty much
I just learned so much! A couple months ago two swarms of those little black ones were jumping everywhere in my yard, then gone like the night. Now the grasshoppers are around. Didn't know they were harmless. Always seems curious of me when I'm gawking at them lol
Just moved to Florida and these things are huge!
When I first saw them here in Central Florida, I assumed they were locusts. A quick Google search revealed them to be Lubber grasshoppers.
Got one in my backyard right now! Absolute tank!
Theyre so cool! I want one! :D my favorite critter from florida tho? The ivory millipede. Now THAT is a loveable little arthropod ❤️
Moved from Florida. I'm gonna miss them
I just saw 2 of these in my yard. This video helped. Thanks!
I am so confused how people think cicadas and locust are the same creatures. I was today's years old when I discovered this weird debate.
I take pictures of these Lubbers whenever i see them outside. We live in Tampa Fl.
When i was growing up the ground would be black and look like an undulating sea, you couldn't see the ground.
Lately, a lot less.
These are everywhere in the summer here in winter garden, especially along the edge of lake apopka
I'm in Apopka and I've had them in my yard but they come and go with the seasons.
I mess with Northerners who fly in by picking up big ones and messing with them. They freak out every time 😂
They must have expanded their range. I lived in Pinellas 50s and 60s and never saw one until we went camping at Myakka. Scared me!
It’s a lubber and it’s Eats everything
This one looks like it has two rows of human like teeth. Almost like its smiling at us. Beautiful colors but a bit creepy too. 😳😁
Live in Greencove and see these things quite a bit. These things are strong for there size. They'll have a good grip on my clothes. Also I 'll grab one and They'll grab a stick. That stick will come up. Basically like me lifting q tree. I been kind of scared to let them on my skin because I thought they might have a bite that hurts
Yes they do bite. I had one on my finger and it started to bite me. It kinda felt like a pinch but I threw it off before it could fully bite me
I take the stick and kill them with it

Window grasshopper
I saw the grasshopper on our
Window plants
Or maybe
legit just swiped 2 of them on top of each other off one my plants lmaooo
thought they were locusts now i kinda feel bad lol
If you accidentally step on one, it pushes your shoe right off of it... lol. Tough little critter.
Oh yeah. They crunch too
Yeah you have to actively beat them with your shoe to kill them. They’re awful
Me and my dad cut them in half but they still move
@@theburgerman5720 Little demons hahaha.
@@theburgerman5720come on.. Ik you don’t like them but please.. that’s pure torture
yep i see them all the time in my backyard 😐
There’s an big one in my window right now I closed it and locked the top one an big one very big
the one there showing is small compared to ones i see in naples
That's because the ones they are showing are baby ones. The baby ones eat the most since they're still growing.
I work at a park in fl and part of my job is if I see grasshopper, it must die
I came to visit my grandmother and I gave myself the same assignment. I find a small wood table leg works like a charm. You smack them off the leaf and smash them mercilessly.
Otherwise, beautiful looking grasshopper.
Lol 😂😅 come to SC go on a island called Sandy Island there are Grass hoppers that are 6 inches!!! Big damn things!!! They come every other year.
The non native reactions 🤣
They’re horrible! I freak out every time I see one in our back yard 😱
Why are they horrible bruh there’s no reason to be scared of them
@@Typicalhispanic because they’re destructive. They get killed on sight in my yard
I keep them as pets
It seems like some years there's millions, and then we may not see any for a few years after that... and then boom. But I haven't seen the adults stacked up since I was a teenager.
@x well, they are making little grasshopper babies
The comments are hilarious. Been living in FL for over 15 years. Came from Chicago area. People up north are so amazed by the weird shit in Florida. People are fascinated by the little lizards running around too.
I hate those things they eat all of my plants 😩 I grab them and take them down the street and drop them off lol bc I put alot of hard work into my plants and flowers and fruit trees. They're gorgeous though. 😍
My kid died from eating these grasshoppers because he's seen a UA-cam video of people eating grasshoppers in Asia.
that's awful, i'm so sorry for you
I want to get some as pets next week if I can find any
Ask their permission first
@@veglursion uhhh ok
You can come grab the 100s of them from my plants!
@@tonz1005 I live in Georgia so we don't really get them here
Do black racer snakes eat them?
I surgically use pesticides that say they kill grasshoppers. If I see them, I try to spray only them so I don’t kill anything else. I’d leave them alone if they didn’t destroy plants so damn badly.
I lub Lubbers
They're a great source of nutrition as well. High protein and vitamins.
She said in the video they're toxic to eat
Are you joking
I am PETRIFIED of these!
A few years ago a gardener came over and likely brought some on these guys on his equipment. Over a few years they began showing up in mass in my backyard. I killed hundreds, and I truly mean hundreds. To me they are so nasty all stacked together creeped me out. So it was me and my machete. Every one i saw i would knock it off its plant and finish it off. Hit it with a shovel, slash it with a machete, step on it. After a few weeks their numbers trickled until a few springs later. Gone. I can now once again peacefully walk around my backyard barefoot.
So the moral of the story is to slaughter them via flip flop. Got it
They can be a pest but they are nothing compared to us humans pests. We have really made a mess of our planet. So many species wiped out/extinct. And for what? $$$$$
Kill them when ever you see them they grow up then eat your plants
