It's been a while since I've revisited Lumbermill's factory builder mechanics. In this Unity Indie Game Devlog, I finally get back into development of Factory Builder features, including an all-new conveyor belt system and six new machines. I've also brought the loans system up to date and improved the ID tool implemented in the last devlog.
Conveyor Belt System Blog Post: bit.ly/lumbermill-conveyors
    ⮞ Description ⮜
I've neglected working on the factory-builder side of things for a while, primarily because the conveyor system had a few major issues that called for other parts of the game to be finished first. I've finally gotten to a point where I can rewrite the conveyors, and I'm really happy with the result. That allowed me to implement 6 new machines, each with plenty of depth to allow for complex factories. A lot packed into this Indie Game Devlog, I hope you enjoy!

    • @CaliHime

was gonna suggest underground as well. He already created the underground layer, so having conveyers go underground makes sense. It also gives the option to make the belts underground more complex (not just a bit straight on). It will also add extra challenge when it comes to wiring. The player will have to decide which is more important or find a way for these systems to coexist.

It would be neat if the saw just cut it in half, and you added a rotation machine. So to get a 4x4 you'd cut an 8x8 to get 2 8x4 and then need to rotate and cut it again to get 2 4x4 from one of the 8x4.

Not 100% sure how well this idea applies to your idea of the game but having just played Rise Of Industry, it'd be cool if you could offload lumber into a factory that will develop different things with your wood such as toys, furniture, boats etc. You would be able to choose from a drop down what you want to develop for example "Toy Train" and it will say: 4x Painted Polished plank where you'll be able to choose what type of wood and what colour of wood you decide. Then the factory will create the toy train and you could make it so that the different parts of the train (smoke stack, boiler, wheels, cockpit etc.) actually come out with different colours depending on the wood you put in.
Not to mention the fact that you could add events where it's the Chinese new year so trains with red wood sell for 50% more or that, say, England won a football tournament so red and white trains now sell for 100% more. This way you have an incentive to change what paints you are using.
    just an idea :^)

Chip, sawdust and bark waste conveyors for each the appropriate machine centers. In modern mills the conveyor system works well to represent the log by log flow, but once the logs have been cut into boards, we use lumber transfer conveyors that can hold significantly more volume. These transfer decks require an unscrambler to singulate the pieces again downstream. Saw changes are a reality every 4-8 hours. If you could model in a log diameter distribution. Bigger older logs will produce more lumber, smaller younger logs less. If your island has a mixture of new and old tree groups, stands, it will impact the productivity and product profile of the mill. Excellent work !

Loving the progress for this so far. An idea for things like the splitter and how they have options for things such as item ratios would be to lock certain items behind research, such as making a machine called an advanced splitter or something and letting it do any ratio, while having the basic version only do a 1:1 ratio, this could give more machines to work towards and keep the player reoptimizing their factory as they unlock new stuff.

Cannot wait to play the game! I watch every devlog as soon as you post them!
For machines, would be cool to see a conveyor gate where the player can choose to stop logs from entering said gate based off of a set conditions. Or a way to push logs off of a conveyor belt onto another based off some sort of logic.
Or perhaps a machine that weighs logs. The output of that machine could be tied to other machines or conveyors mentioned above.

I have some ideas that maybe you could consider. Not all of them are good just random thoughts
Polisher- removes any impurities in wood (additional profits when sold)
Wood Denotter- removes the bark and trims the wood
Firewood chopper - turns logs into many chunks of wood (1 log turns into 6 chunks and can clog up conveyer belts faster)
Sawdust collector - Place next to cutting machines to improve speed on cuts
Wood packager - stacks 2x4 for more conveyer space/storage
It would be cool if you had an option to build your buildings out of the wood that you manufacture, as well as an option to buy it
IMO I think that the splitter should only go up to 3 (1:3, 2:3).
Like I said not all of these thoughts are good, but some came across my mind while watching.

I don't completely recall if there is employee happiness, but I feel a cool thing that you could do is make a campfire that you put beside tents and you can put wood directly into it early in the game if you need to increase happiness. Then you could add another output to the bark stripper which gives bark which you can put directly into the campfire so essentially it stops costing you wood.

one thing which i think might be cool is river transportation. You would have a "conveyer to river converter" or something similar which would be a translation between the two, and then a "river to conveyer converter" as well. Now why use this? Well, rivers have been used to transport logs for a long time, and not just with the historical context but rivers would be below conveyers meaning you have two levels of transportation to work with but rivers could be faster depending on the current and provide some challenge with machines that only accept river-based input. Rivers could also be useful if you ever add height levels to the game- rivers would basically act as a diode in that they are faster and cheaper to move from high terrain to lower terrain (waterfalls) than conveyers, but conveyers are able to go uphil with the height change device being more expensive.
as far as devices go, a wood pulper would be nice, so we can make cardboard and paper (either in the same machine or in another one). A furnace-type one would be good for making charcoal and providing some power. Power storage would be nice if you don't have it yet, at night solar panels aren't going to work.
some machines to plant different tree types, and another one to harvest could be cool, maybe a little bit to complex.

Nice update. One thing that I have been thinking for a while (not sure if I have mentioned it before) is that it doesn't seem right that placing a conveyor removes any trees that are in the way. For one thing, the player is losing the value of that tree and second, it just doesn't seem realistic. The player should be forced to clear the path before building. This may require a new structure (which is something else I have been thinking), a stockpile. Where newly cut trees can be stacked while waiting for processing. With a stockpile, you can have lumberjacks working before your processing systems are online. Just some thoughts. Thanks for the taking the time to create the videos. It is fun to follow along.

what about Rough sawn lumber and planed down lumber. also as another person mentioned a rotation unit så if you have a 2x4 and you run it laying down you get the 2pcs 2x2 or if it is standing up you get 2pcs of 1x4. You can also add sawdust as a bi product for examples sheet goods with also "takes away" from the amount of wood. then you can choose between circular saws and bandsaws. Another option can be to turn the wood to slabs without debarring and add dryers. Dries slabs can then be sent to carpentry factories. There are many options what to do but i like what i see so far :)

Just a FYI. When talking about lumber sizes the smaller dimension is normally said before the larger. 2x4, 2x6 2x8 2x10 etc.

    • @BWDev
      @BWDev  2 роки тому

Yep, and I did consider presenting it that way. Decided against it as it would cause issues when selecting a dimension to cut, as you might halve one dimension - making it switch from being the larger to the smaller, which would be confusing for setting up any following saws. If the two dimensions are written out independently that eliminates any of the confusion. The game would of course still treat the two variations (e.g 2x4 and 4x2) as the same thing anyway.

Not sure how it'd fit in mechanically, but some ideas for processing wood could be something along the lines of a wood generator to create energy (I forget currently how you currently have that working, so if the idea doesn't fit then dw), but also you could do something where you create charcoal from the wood. Basically, there's your traditional stuff like furniture and whatnot that you currently have, but outside of that there's a couple other things which wood can be turned into. Maybe sawing wood can create sawdust, which can be collected and recycled into something else as another idea.

Something that caught my attention in this video: The splitter really seems to slow down the flow of logs on the conveyor belts. It seems to wait for a log to get passed before it allows the next log to enter. I don't know if this is intentional, but I would prefer a more steady flow of the logs through the splitter, so they don't build up in front of them.
