The Big 12 isnt going to exist. No point in making an agreement with that conference. Its not about controlling the 12 team tournament, its about making a statement that they do not want it to exist.
They are currently in mourning! When they get over it ….they will collect their $33m a year for 3 more years snd the $80-120m from Texas and OU….and see what happens!.If a few bail….ie…W.Va. Iowa State. OKla St. …only more $$$ for remaining! then they will hook up with the AAC . Schedules will probably remain for at least 2-3 years no matter what ….and you will see a lot of grudge matches for sure! Hurt feelings! BYU, Houston, Memphis, Cincinnati, UCF, USF….are great programs in FB and BB…and ripe for merging and better contract! All are in Markets a lot larger than most of the remaining Big 12 ( little 8) with Tulsa, Tulane Temple, ECU, and SMU in markets better than most ( Philly, Dallas, New Orleans, Tulsa, North Car.)…better than Waco, Lubbock, Stillwater, Lawrence, Des Moise!!! Granted they all made the mistake of being in. A conference with a few dominant programs…and being fodder for their programs! They need to realize who they really are and join a conference of equals with equal vote and money….in this together attitude…let’s show the turds…OU/UT!
I read an article about Kansas joining the BIG EAST. That makes more sense than anything I've read. the move protects the Kansas basketball brand, leverages it in the best way possible, and allows them in football to either 1) go indie like UCONN 2) drop to FCS 3) drop football all together. Kansas as a power 5 school never made much investment in their program-- just not a priority. Unless the BIG comes in for a rescue, protect the basketball brand. Why worry about the state of the football program when it hasn't mattered before? Absent the rescue, the money for football is going to plummet in any event.
don't' tell some of those knuckle heads that. Some are saying how much viewers and $ the other Big 12 schools brought in minus OK and TX the last couple years. ( Now, wait a year AFTER Tx and OK are gone then see how much the remaining 8 matter!! Only hope for the Remainder 8 Conference is to expand coast to coast and try for a bigger pie. Individually though it will be the same. If they don't go REAL big, they will be nothing at all.
@@josephcernansky1794 one could argue that the AAC has more quality football schools than the Angry Eight at this point. Not at all convinced that without Texas and Oklahoma the Big 12 has the prestige to attract anyone.
@@bige2012 I’m not suggesting they stay, actually they are against the Big 12 existing, so everyone needs to consider they are actively working for the best interests of the SEC and have been for some time. Bowlsby sat at a table with Sankey for months while this was going on…all the while…I’m just saying the Alliance likely would not want a direct line back to the SEC, so Big 12 exclusion was the only choice.
If this alliance is a non-aggression/poaching pact, then the ACC is just implementing as a stop-gap while the schools with options figure out how to leave the conference. I say this because poaching PSU is required for the ACC to survive financially. Including some inter-conference revenue sharing may prevent a breakup, but the chances of that are slim to none.
Thanks for the informative reports John. Having the Alliance members want a more Collegiate look to Sports, as opposed to a Semi-Pro look was nice to hear too.
One of the purposes not talked about in public, is an informal agreement not to attempt taking schools from each others conferences. Big 12 was not a threat to take schools from these 3 conferences AND they probably discussed dividing up some of the Big 12 schools in an orderly manner. If this was to be done, it should be done all at once so that the transition into the new conferences was a quick and smooth as possible. Under the currrent state of affairs, each school is losing value each day because of recruiting weakness which becomes a circling the drain affair.
Thank you for the content. There is some crazy stuff out there. (Not this channel.) Supposedly someone posted on a Kansas message board that if the BIG does not take KU, the SEC is a backup because the SEC needed another blue blood basketball program. I realize fans are going to be fans, but this is getting out of hand. I am just going to wait and see what happens. I do hope there is a place at the table for some of the very good football programs in the Big 12, but I have serious doubts.
I wouldn't rule out the SEC expanding further, but it won't be KU. KU is a valuable brand though so I imagine they end up with a decent landing spot. No one is going to be discussing their landing spots anytime soon even if they have one because those 8 remaining schools want the $80 million each out of OU and UT. They aren't going to jeopardize that. That's likely why you keep hearing certain schools are going to certain conferences but you likely won't hear anything official for many months if not years from now.
The Big12 needs to move quickly to expand. Adding UCF, Cincinnati, Memphis, and BYU (also potentially Houston/SMU and Boise if they want to go to 14) would give them a solid conference that would be the 3rd/4th best conference in some seasons.
Finally, a sensible take. The "alliance" was never a threat to the Big XII. It was all about governance, philosophy, and the playoff. The Big XII, like the ACC has traditionally been aligned with the SEC, and the outliers were always the B1G and the Pac-12. Now, the true outlier is the SEC. The average fan simply does not think like a university president (nor should they really).
@@MrMgage13 I will put Michigan , Penn State , Wisconsin , Iowa , and Ohio State , are better than the 5 top SEC schools combined . Look at the facts . The SEC has two consistent good teams ( LSU & Alabama ) . Who else do they have that is consistent year in and year out ?
def feels like the rest of the conferences would be better off expanding the playoff.. yea the sec may get 4-5 teams in every year, but they stand a good chance on getting 2 of the 4 every year as it is, idk..
The reason to delay expanding right now is the exclusive right to bid for ESPN if the playoff expands before 2026, not to prevent the SEC from getting massive number of teams in each year. That limits the amount of money available (as ESPN doesn't have to bid against Fox) and is a huge boon for ESPN (which is about to be the only TV partner with the SEC). ESPN would prefer not to have to negotiate against other broadcasters and they can use their influence over the SEC to push for it now. I'd love a twelve team playoff as much as the next guy (my alma mater would likely get in every few years), but I understand why the ACC/Big Ten/Pac 12 would prefer an open negotiation where Fox/CBS/NBC could all bid.
Call college athletes what they are now…….compensated college professionals. This new realignment, along with NIL, has turned a select few collegiate football, baseball, & basketball programs into a new category that have become collegiate professional sports teams. It doesn’t matter if this is a good or bad thing, it’s here to stay and it’s destined to get bigger and more powerful for a few high profile colleges.
I don't disagree and I can't change the facts. This is really going to kill OSU. How is Stillwater supposed to compete with an in-state SEC team for recruits? It's inconceivable that the Cowboys fade away. And I'm an OU fan. No Bedlam Series, no OSU.
Can we stop casting Greg Sankey as Emperor Palpatine here? He's not some weird, power hungry CFB despot. He's a shrewd leader who made a no-brainer when Texas & Oklahoma reached out to him first
@@battles423 Exactly. They're just trying to win the PR battle now that they've lost the real battle- the type the Big 12 always lost whenever there was one to fight
So I think the big 12 needs a scheduling alliance with the ACC. We promise them not to add a Florida school because that brings them more stuff competition in recruiting in Florida. So we add Cincinnati Memphis Houston and Colorado State. The ACC makes sense then old big east rivals can play with Cincinnati and West Virginia. The other football schools could also get a foot in Texas by playing games annually in Texas.
What makes you think the ACC wants WVU? If the ACC added a team, other than ND, the revenue payouts per team will DECREASE. Adding a team actually hurts the conference. And the ACC is under contract till 2036.
Don't get me wrong. I feel badly for WVU, but the ACC may be fighting for its life really soon...and WVU doesn't provide enough gunpowder. (I envision a really big Big 10 of twenty universities. Association of American Universities [AAU] status is important to the Big 10. Nebraska was an AAU member when it joined the conference a decade ago...and then it promptly lost its membership the very next year. I think that the following scenario could happen: 1. B10 votes Nebraska out. 2. Kansas and Iowa State, both AAU members, join the conference. 3. the ACC breaks up as B10 takes the five AAU members in the ACC [Pitt, UVa, UNC, Duke, and Georgia Tech] while Florida State, Clemson, Miami, and Virginia Tech join with the five previously mentioned ACC schools to dissolve the grant of rights clause in the ACC and then bolt for the SEC. Big 10 would have twenty schools and the SEC would have twenty. The remaining ACC schools would become the Big 12 East while Nebraska and the remaining six Big 12 schools would constitute the Big 12 West.)
Why the hell would you take anything ESPN has to say as gospel???? And the big ASSumption...that there's going to be a huge pot of gold for the next TV contracts from any major network. The possible manipulation by ESPN should be the focus.
They got left out because there will be no Big 12. The Pac 12 is going to 14 and will leave only 6 schools left in the conference. Pac 12 commissioner already said they've been doing interviews.
It's going to be Houston and Texas Tech going to the PAC 12 TCU will not get in for 3 reasons. 1. Religious School 2. Blocks by several schools in The area particularly by Arizona and Arizona state because of recruiting in their area. 3. Small private school with no large media outlet.
Sounds like the 3 alliance conferences feel the Big-12 chose its dance partner some time ago, the SEC. It would seem the Big-12 chose the wrong partner, if working with the ACC, B1G, or Pac-12 was going to be in its future. Wow... Oklahoma and Texas, along with the SEC, really screwed the Big-12.
Duh. AAC, MWC, WAC, Sun Belt, etc. were also left out. This alliance sounds more than their attempt reassure their respective schools. I am not surprised that remaining 8 is desperate to get picked up by individually reaching out to PAC 12 and ACC. Conversations likely went - Big 12: Can we merge? PAC 12: No.... OK State/TTU/IW State/KU: How about us 4? We can leave other dead beats behind. PAC 12: That is interesting. We may have to sit on it and get back to you. OK State/TTU/IW State/KU: Ok. We will wait. But hurry..
Dang...I feel like this will be a last minute thing for the 8 remaining teams. Like...whatever decision is made or whatever will happen, we 8 will not know of it until the precious last minute! And I hate that!
How is it a purgatory? No one in the Big 12 can leave anyway -- the remaning 8 schools all have the same GOR as UT and OU do. I'm sure they are having discussions behind the scenes but even if they had an invitation in hand right now they couldn't do anything with it anyway without creating issues with the other Big 12 schools. Can you imagine if Tx Tech were to say it was leaving and TCU and BU started having hearings and trying to keep them from going without towing them along? It seems like that's how things work in their state. And has anyone noticed that both Oklahoma State and Tx Tech haven't been complaining or acting all that worried? I've seen OSU administrators say they are disappointed in OU and I've seen Tech administrators say they are disappointed, but I haven't seen them trying to link themselves to the other 7 schools or send out tweets trying to sell themselves like KU, TCU, Baylor, etc. Maybe there are more clues in how the administration from each of these schools acts publicly than anything the other conferences, ESPN, or The Athletic says.
@ But that's not necessarily accurate. If one or two schools leave there will still be a majority of schools in place who can (and will, as they should) enforce the GOR against all the schools leaving. It takes a super majority to dissovle the conference, and for that to happen you'd have to have at least four and maybe even 5 of the remaining schools leave. So it a school like Oklahoma State or Tx Tech or Kansas has an invitation in hand they can't really act on it yet without the risk of losing millions and millions of dollars.
@@BevanFarmTexas They were the ones at the hearing in Texas that kept stressing how they were aligned with Tech and Baylor, and the alum Congresswoman kept asking "Tech and Baylor are partners with TCU, right??" at least a dozen times trying to force the issue. I think TCU would be a better fit in the ACC than the Pac-12 personally.
I wouldn't be surprised if Tech and OSU were working together. They are the two largest schools left, arguably the two biggest brands left along with Kansas, and they are almost mirror images of each other when it comes to culture. I think OSU stole/borrowed Tech's horse and some hand signals too so they even do the same cheers on gameday. If anyone is going to be aligned together it should be those two IMO.
@@JohnSmith-gc1cm That's a little different than going out on social media and pumping yourself up. Especially when the person that was doing the talking was an alum, not an admin at the school. I agree with you. I think they're a good fit in the ACC. However, I don't think that will happen.
Any idea if K-State at least reached out to the Pac 12? Sounds like the other 7 might be singing the same song as K-State (Big 12 stay together) but at the same time they're looking for another venue to sing at.
The days of that type of loyalty and gentleman's agreements are over. No one ever thought Oklahoma would split from Oklahoma State, or Texas from Texas Tech because of the gentleman's agreements they've had for so long, but today's world is different. If the B1G decides it needs USC and Oregon in order to keep from falling out of the top tier with the SEC they'll poach USC and Oregon. It's not unlike how the SEC's gentleman's agreement with it's members not to invite their competitors from within the same state fell by the wayside with adding Texas. Texas A&M even leaked the story early to try and keep it from happening and whined incessantly to the media for four days. The SEC finally told A&M they had a choice, either to A) suck it up and happily accept the two new schools, or B) the SEC would grant their wish and enforce the "one per state" rule by giving UT the spot A&M has been holding. It didn't take A&M long to shut up and enthusiastically vote in favor of adding UT, and that's exactly what would happen if anyone tried to oppose the B1G poaching a Pac 12 school to protect it's standing. There are no more gentleman's agreements in this new era of college football, and IMO it's not a good thing for the future of the sport.
SEC has no desire to add any of the remaining B12 schools, regardless if they have more in common with them. Also, what happens if 3 of the top 4 CFP teams are SEC? Seems to me the Alliance schools would see a 12 team playoff as an increased path to playoff participation.
Just put in a limit of one per Conference. Almost guarantees 3 spots for the alliance and puts a damper on any big school joining the SEC since it would be a bloodbath to make the playoffs from there
@@rubaiyat300 you’ll regret that too when the SEC wins the National Championship despite that petty BS. Too many teams with great records have gotten left out of the existing playoff structure.
Putting the 12-team playoff on hold doesn't hurt the SEC. ESPN wants it because of ratings and they want to sign an extension before it can be shopped around. Putting playoff expansion on hold will only hurt the three conferences forming the alliance.
@@rubaiyat300 3 conferences...plus one wild card...Big 12(perhaps, hopefully reconstituted and other Group of 5. 4 team playoff and then THE National Collegiate Champion is crowned. End of story. What's that Disney league? I think they fill in the non-nfl region with a junior league.
Ah, but they do want expansion but on their terms. No unlimited at large bids for any conference. My guess is they will settle on 3. Given the limitation of cross-conference play, and the inherent bias in rankings, that seems fair.
The Big Ten is basically Ohio Sate, putting the 12 team playoff on hold really doesn't affect them. The same with Clemson. it would only really affect the Pac 12 and the Big 12.
@@sully9427 they're not going to put it on hold. It's all posturing. The expanded playoffs means a lot more money and none of them are going to walk away from more money. They're not happy that the SEC could possibly get five or six teams in the expanded model as it was presented and they want limits placed on how many teams from each conference. Make no mistake, they all want an expanded playoffs, but the SEC is willing to call their bluff.
That should have happened when Bowlsby was hired. The fact that the little eight still employ him shows you just how out of touch they are. Every AD in the little 8 should be fired right now.
@@machtschnell7452 You think Bowlsby is bad check out Kevin Warren of the B1G, most of the fan base was ready to shoot him over the crap decisions he made to cancel the season last year regarding COVID. Meanwhile Bowlsby figured out a way to make the season happen.
@@melroze There are more options than that but most are moot in that financial and recruiting (negative impact) would be the same as Merging with the AAC. HA HA one option that has never been brought fourth anywhere that I have seen, probably because it would never happen in a million years, is for the B12 to get Notre Dame to join the conference. Now wouldn't that cause a ruckus in the college football world.
The alliance just means they agree not to poach off each other, it doesn't say anything about how they can't add schools from the Big12. But even if they don't, the Big12 can still expand by four and certainly be as valuable from a competitive and TV revenue perspective as the Pac12 and the ACC. The B1G would still have an advantage over all 3 of them, but not by as much as you might think. The SEC have put themselves so far ahead I don't see anyone catching them anytime soon. I would rather see the Big12 stick together and expand. The Pac12 certainly isn't going to take all 8, and the B1G doesn't seem to interested in expanding at all. The ACC isn't interested in adding West Virginia. It simply doesn't make sound financial sense for them to do that. I certainly don't want to see a West Virginia or Kansas State or Baylor left out in the cold just because the Pac12 might want to cherry-pick. I say the Big12 should just stick together and add at least four new schools from a list that includes, Cincinnati, Memphis, BYU, UCF, Houston, Louisiana, Boise State, and SMU. Then the Big12 should do a scheduling and voting alliance with the SEC! If the other 3 conferences want to gang up on the SEC, then why shouldn't the Big12 hitch its wagon to the big dog? I certainly wouldn't care if the Big12 existed in the shadow of the SEC, just as long as they continued to exist. After that you can never tell what might happen down the road. Maybe a Colorado or Nebraska or Arizona might see a value in moving to the Big12 where they can have a legitimate shot for a conference title instead of being the perpetual conference doormat. No offense intended, but those schools haven't exactly had a great deal of success in their current situation. A change of scenery might be just the thing.
From a sheer travel perspective you don't want a conference that is coast to coast. If the Big 12 expands the first two schools should be Cincinnati and Houston. Then you have to choose go west and go for BYU and Colorado State or Boise State do you East and grab UCF and Memphis. Going both ways adds travel expenses when budgets are going to shrink.
@@ssgus3682 There's just no getting around excessive travel times for the schools furthest East or West. You can mitigate the issues as much as possible by having East and West divisions. You just don't want West Virginia or UCF having to travel well over 2000 miles to play at BYU on a regular basis. Adding six schools to get to 14 would be ideal. Each team would play the six games in their division, three games against a team from the other division, one game against an SEC team, one games against a G5 conference team, and one against a TBD team, plus the conference championship. You could work it out that the far East and West teams never played each other in consecutive years. How to split them up would take a little negotiating. I would suggest something like this: East: West Virginia Iowa St. Kansas UCF Cincinnati Memphis Houston West: Kansas St OK St. Texas Tech TCU Baylor BYU Boise St. Maybe not the perfect solution, but not too terrible all things considered.
@@ssgus3682 BYU is the most valuable and most widely watched of all the G5 level schools. If the objective is to improve the value of the conference (and it is), then BYU should be the first school you invite, regardless of geographic issues.
The fact that the “Big12” thought USC would even entertain a shadow of a thought in leaving the PAC12 for the BIG12 is the reason why they will soon become non-existent: they are so far from reality. Keep living that fantasy. #RIPBig12 😂😂😂
I think there is much more to the 3 conference alliance than you know. We'll know pretty soon, (Maybe this week) what the initial alliance is going to be about.
Its also odd referring to certain universities: "not aligning with our progressive cultures" when all these kids do is go to church/chapel every week.....or God forbid (NPI) there is a cross on campus......Ohhhhh the tolerance......The best part was when some writer assuaged our concerns by stating that TCU was "distancing themselves" from the brothers of Christ affiliation they have had for 100 years as if that is a GOOD thing. OK....THATS BETTER..YOUR IN!!!!!! Believe what we believe and it will all be ok . Joke.
I think it’s time for folks to stop pretending that blue chip athletes are seeking an education when they enroll in a university that openly embraces and promotes their sports teams. A student enrolling in a University for an education, if they graduate, will have a mostly worthless diploma along with massive student loans to repay. Their diploma qualifies them for a entry level job. While a blue chip athlete, that doesn’t receive a diploma, will leave school with a million + dollars in his bank account. If they are good enough then they’ll sign a pro contract for a boatload of more money. So, why are folks pretending Universities that emphasize sports (football/basketball) give a tinkers damn about educating scholarship athletes?
That's because the money making sport of football and basketball are populated by "student" athletes who have no business being high school graduates much less college students. This is true of Duke and Stanford as well as Florida State and Oklahoma. Thus it is stuffy to include academics in consideration of a sports conference when academics mean bunk regarding the sports that matter for a SPORTS conference affiliation
It's not a good news, but it's not a bad news either that the new alliance doesn't include the Big 12. This means the Big Ten, Pac-12, ACC would not poach the Big 12 teams, which allows the Big 12 to maximize the punishment for the two traitors and get all of the money from the sneaky ESPN. After all the money are paid, the Big 12 teams then can approach the alliance however they want for their own best interest.
Hahaha! Ooooooookay. Not being poached is good??!!! All these programs WANT to be poached by a p4 conference, and they’re all butt hurt that nobody wants them.
B12 and American proposed merger to create 2 divisions, SEC controlled alliance of 40 teams to match B1G. The merged league is adequately positioned for an alliance controlled by the SEC similar to the alliance that the B1G/ACC/Pac12 are forming. With the alliance, the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Tennessee, West Virginia come under the complete control (scheduling, recruiting) of the SEC with further penetration in Florida. The tie in also provides strong Military connection. Controlling the schedule of top media markets such as Dallas (#5 nationally) is useful to the SEC. West (initially 8, moving to 11 or 12) TxTech B12 TCU B12 Baylor B12 Ok State B12 SMU Amer Houston Amer Tulsa Amer Tulane Amer Colorado State - add Boise St -add Air Force - add BYU -Future add? East (initially 11, possibly 12) West Virginia B12 Kansas State B12 Kansas B12 Iowa State B12 Cincinnati Amer Memphis Amer UCF Amer USF Amer Temple Amer ECU Amer Navy Amer Army - Future add? With the potential of poaching schools (West Virginia ACC, for example), the league is durable to withstand contraction. The move preserves in state rivalries in Oklahoma and Texas while enabling Missouri-Kansas matchups to reoccur. Expansion of the merger would largely augment the west division from the mountain west. Few teams remain for consideration: Hawaii Nevada Fresno State San Diego St North Dakota Appalachian St Florida Atl Louisiana Tech UConn
@@subgum3403 I don’t think they add more in the next media deal which is 2024 or 2023. The athletic said we will be getting about $60 million per team. I don’t think TCU or Ok State add $60 million each. Plus USC and UCLA don’t like going to Washington State or Oregon state. Oklahoma state is pretty much another one of those only where the hell further away.
This failure has way more to do with Bowlsby's predecessors than by anything he did. Steve Hatchell is the one who instigated the "do whatever Texas tells you to do" mentality for Big 12 Commissioners, and thats what led to all those schools leaving in 2010. In fact, if Hatchell had been a strong commissioner back then and stood up to Texas at that time the Big 12 would still have Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri, A&M, and probably even Texas right now and would be making the same money as the SEC or Big 10. And if Texas didn't like it back then they could have left at that time and the other 11 schools would have gotten along just fine, and would still be doing just fine. Literally all this alignment that has happened was triggered by UTexas. It's not Bowlsby's fault, he's just the unfortunate guy left holding the bag.
Great analysis. It is a daily dynamic situation. We saw the Pac 12 go immediately to the "ideals" and "culture" card early on. This is of course socio/political....which has no place here and yet is now EVERYWHERE we go. Of course it is laughable that we would think the leadership at Clemson (they ARE the ACC in football) would have any interest at all in sitting in a room with the Pac12 leadership talking about a great pentathlon team. I would be surprised if UCLA draws 50k people to a home game and half of them show up at halftime. Big 12 stays put....forces the hand of OU and T and they then add Cinci UCF USF and Houston. BOOM they are a better football conference than the pac 12.
IF??? Any of the remaining Big 12 programs are taken into a power conference, it will only be among the cream of the remainder. Fewer than can be counted on one hand. It will be a cost/benefit decision. Will a program bring in more revenue than it will cost in shared payout revenue among members. No one wants to divide the pie too thinly among multiple programs. At bare minimum, several of the Big 12 schools are going to have to consider a marriage with schools from the AAC and Mountain West.
WVU to the ACC , as was mentioned above WVU draws more viewers than any other ACC regular team (ND excluded as they are not a full member) except for Clemson.
Not going to happen. None of these are top research or AAU members. PAC-12 isn’t going to add just for the sake of expanding. San Diego State is AAU and decent media market, would make more sense than any of these.
Its not that easy. Im not saying that the schools don't fit in nicely with the Pac, both are R1 research, have great fans, strong athletic programs. But, you still need the votes from the schools and then it becomes tricky. It comes down to 2 things, recruiting and value (I actually don't care that much about value, but someone will mention it and it will become a whole thing if I didn't put it on the list.) Recruiting is something no one is talking about, and it is a very big issue. Recruiting: There are 4 schools in the South Division who play USC/UCLA every year in football. It is a huge recruiting tool, the chance to play against the "Blue Blood" Pac12 school. When the Pac10 decided to add 2 members (for a championship game and tv revenue), one of the biggest sticking points was who would play a USC and UCLA. The compromise was a 9 conference game model, giving the schools in the north one extra game to play in the LA market. So what does that mean? whatWhy would ASU and UofA want to trade Los Angeles for Stillwater and Lubbock?
I heard the sec is leaving ncaa football, to make some kinda disney conference. so that could be good news for the big 12 (with a few more teams). then it would be the big, pac, acc and big 12....each sending their champ, to a 4 game playoff...nice simple clean
Yep. That's the future. There will be a 32-Team Super League. Four Conferences in one Super League. Your school is in the Super League if it brings a big TV market.
We're still decades from that coming to fruition. We're at a point right now where the SEC could not be fully credible on its own, and neither would the rest of college football be credible without the SEC. However, if the SEC continues to bring top programs into the SEC it's certainly possible that the result will be a lone super-conference which will not need any other conferences/teams to produce a credible national champion.

So let me get this straight … Bowlsby and Sanke collaborated on the 12 team playoff, then Sanke back stabs Bowlsby and destroys the B12. Now, the other of conferences want nothing to do with the B12 because we collaborated with the SEC. To top it off, the other 3 conferences tell us we are a better fit with the SEC. You think that is good news? We’re fucked! The ONLY option is foe the 8 to stay together, collect contractually obligated money from Texass and OU, sue the shit out of ESPN and then see what the landscape looks like a few years from now.
Appreciate your reports, analysis and opinions. Thank you ⭐️ I’m advocating that the present BIG 12 expand by adding 8 teams: UConn Cincinnati Memphis UCF USF BYU Boise State Houston

How damaged is the Big 12 relationship with ESPN? If the Big Ten, ACC, and Pac 12 are banding together to counter the SEC, maybe they (and ESPN) would want a partner to help balance things out politically. Similar to the "Alliance" this would not be a financial arrangement, the SEC (like the B1G) would still hold a large financial advantage, but the Big 12 and SEC have quite a bit of shared history (especially now with 1 former Big 8 team and 4 former SWC team in the SEC), they align well philosophically (ESPN mentioned in article), and they both worked together on the proposed 12 team playoff format. It may also help keep some of the old rivalries alive like the Border War, Bedlam, and the Battle of the Brazos. Might be a better long term situation then being a distant member in the PAC without any clout.
Is it just me or am I not reassured that the BIGXII is not going to be absorbed but down graded.. meaning go the way of the lower non power five conferences?
@@livingforever6157 they are already downgraded … no power conference wants the remaining 8 schools football programs. Academics is not the issue… $ is the issue. And of course, control of the money.
I’d be shocked if Texas Tech and OSU don’t go to the PAC. TTU offers wayyyy to much to be “left out.” Tier 1 university, over 40k students massive alumni bases in Dallas and San Antonio), #25 most valuable football program in the country according to Forbes, #25 in ncaa apparel sales, nicest basketball facilities in the country, elite baseball and basketball teams, 61k+ seat football stadium, and the list goes on and on. Gets the PAC into central time zone for games and brining OSU secured both OK and TX tv networks and fan bases. Plus it keeps the SEC from owning the state of Texas if TTU ended up in the SEC. at least the PAC would have the 3rd largest brand in Texas, since Ut and A&M are both in SEC now.
A lot of discussion about leaving the NCAA and people saying that is "the good part". College football is heading full speed into a dark tunnel with no knowledge of what that light is coming at them. Do they want to be a junior NFL? What does the NFL, MLB, NBA, etc. all have in common to keep total market interest and maximize revenue at the league level ? Parity controls - salary caps, draft orders, etc. The only weak parity control that exists in college football was handed down by the NCAA. Limited scholarships combined with not being able to pay players. So now it will be, "we cannot give you a scholarship but there is a local car dealer that will give you $200,000 per year to put your face on a billboard on the edge of town". The rich will get richer, and it will not be college sports but rather a contest of who is bigger and richer. The beauty of amateur college sports will be gone for ever. And it all started when OU sued the NCAA over TV rights in 1984 and won.

Is college football as a simi pro model a good idea? College sports is a regional game, that builds to a national championship. We already have a pro league. What is so exciting about a pro lite league? I don’t get it.
Well, when the players began fervently demanding to be paid to play and they started getting stipends, and then the NIL became a reality...to begin with....some teams knew that to provide their star players more exposure and competition vs better opponents, AND to boost their recruitment efforts (for 2, they may have gotten tired of losing out on most of the very best HS Footballers, who were choosing to play in the SEC...as 1 reason for moving) a move to the 1 Conference that can provide those things, and more $..a LOT more $....was in order.
How crazy!!! So in a college sports it matters to have good academic schools, all around good sports program and the ability to produce revenue. Those guys are snobs and stuff shirts
@@Kmbri is carry your own weight and having standards wokeness? Or should standards be lowered for some? Texas subsides the rest of the BIG 12 with recruits and money, now that Texas left BIG schools want to join the PAC 12 and be subsidized by California, are we know advocating for socialism?
@@dannyz9533 First off, I agree with you I think. Maybe I misread your original post. My comment did have an "eye roll" emoji. They really need to create a sarcasm font. Second, all joking aside, the Pac 12 has a Tier 1 brand in both athletics and academics. They will not invite any university that doesn't put an emphasis on post grad and research (see BYU) no matter their athletic achievements (KSL Sports Sept 6, 2018). R1 research is the first qualification to the Pac12, much like AAU is for the B1G. Third, I don't think there is as great of a value in viewership models as we see a movement to a streaming platform for live entertainment. So while TV viewerships may be lower, there is a case to be made that companies like Amazon, Apple, Alphabet (Google/UA-cam), Facebook, etc are more interested in potential subscribers than ratings (Amazon $1B for Lord of the Rings, Apple $4B for Beats, etc). Fourth, while Americans like to call themselves Capitalists, the truth is that the US is a mixed market economy of both capitalism and socialism. Hopefully that clarifies things.
This is about money and viewership...And that is why the AAC is being very quiet because ESPN and the AAC have made a deal and the only part that has to happen now is time...[The Big 12 commissioner was right about this deal with the AAC], and the remaining orphans in the now defunct Big 12 will finally come down to earth and realize they aren't all that... ESPN doesn't want to have to pay out about 500-600 million dollars over the remaining contract and Texas and Oklahoma don't want to pay-out the many millions of dollars either to get out of the conference completely and early like next year...I guarantee you that Texas and Oklahoma will not be playing in the Big 12 after this year... The AAC has plenty of viewership and it is only increasing each year via streaming which is where the last pot of gold resides..The AAC has dominated the New Year Six bowls for the last 5 or 6 years in a row and will be dominating it again this year... The AAC still has many of its' historical rivalries in place as well...So maybe you aren't interested in the AAC teams, but I assure there are plenty of fans in the midwest that are very interested... If things fall the way I think they will, the AAC will end up taking about 5 of the orphan schools left and become a P5 conference...There is no way the remaining orphan schools left in the Big 12 can maintain that status...They only maintained that status to date was because of Texas and Oklahoma was in the conference when they signed their last media contract...Trust me; ESPN has a clause in that contract; that if any school or schools leave the conference, then everything is back on the table as it relates to contractual agreements... Yeah; the lawyers have already lined up like vultures to make this easy money...GREED is ruining everything in the World...
Its really simple as to why the Big 12 was left out. Big 12 is a lame duck and even if the conference adds schools they will just be a beefier AAC. It's also a possible source for poaching by all 3 of these conferences in the future.
@@sully9427 Texas has been looking for a home for awhile. They weren't poached. I thought loyalty ran deep in the south? Sounds like the north and the west seem to value integrity. The swc, big 12 seems to have been nothing but backstabbing. Big east was too big. Looks like the sec,big 10, and the pac 12 have stayed steady through it all.
John If your reporting is accurate and a major concern of the “Big Three” was to agree philosophically not to poach and I quote “each other’s conferences” then leaving the Big12 out makes sense. Why? If the Big 12 was included then the “four conferences” would be saying we will not “poach” each other including the Big 12. So........ the “Big Three” has now said “poaching the Big 12” is still on the table. The door is open for some of the Big 12 schools to end up probably in the PAC 12. This idea was further reinforced by the PAC 12 Commissioner announcing a day or two ago that they were considering adding teams and might possibly have a decision in a week or so. If so my guess is OSU and TCU goes to the PAC 12 and very slight possibility Kansas to the Big 10. So...... maybe the door is still a bit open!!!
The remaining 8 schools in the Big12 were left out because they are essentially G5 schools. The best those schools can do is grab the best G5 schools to bolster the conference but at this point I don't know if that is even possible.
The two teams in the big twelve that pushed the playoff you are talking about already left the big 12 and you are just pushing ESPNs crap, so you are part of the problem !!!
It's sad but KSU is gonna be left out (KU too)...KSU is a power conferences worst nightmare...brings no viewership to a TV deal, but is competitive enough to embarrass a bigger program occasionally...the state offers very little D1 talent for conferences to vie for I'm sure Texas and Florida are tired of Talent coming to KSU...too many changes in the world, but if you look back you can see these changes coming...now if KSU has a stud trans QB, you might have some interest in our changing world
It's been tried and didn't work. It just cost to much money just to develop the players physically. This includes weight lifting and dietary consumption and other development.
Eventually, there will be four conferences that will each send their champion to the Final Four SEC, Big Ten, ACC, and Pac 12. Who gets left out? That is why it is imperative for schools like West Virginia, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and others to find a way into one of those conferences.
Why? Because the Average 8 doesn’t matter and everybody knows it. This conference is dead. It is not coming back. The fans of these teams need to come back to reality and realize their teams will merge w/ the AAC and the MW.
"The Taliban is ready to uphold a non-aggression pact with the Afghani government as it has refrained from attacking US forces in the country in line with the peace agreement, a spokesman for the group, Zabihullah Mujahid, said Sunday." - January 4th, 2021.
I think the bottom dwellers of the conferences, in football, have much to fear in the future, especially in the SEC. If the Big12 schools have no "value" to the remaing conferences, where does that lead regarding the future for Schools like Vandy, Louisville, Rutgers, BC MSState, Mississippi and a few others. They are horrible TV draws now, yet the get the same money as the most watched schools in their conferences. While the Big12 schools are currently sidelined I know that all of them except Kansas and TCU draw more viewers than the bottom dwellers of each conference. The numbers indicate (I know people can pick and choose what numbers they use) that West Virginia is the 30th ranked team as far as viewership in the FBS. If I am not mistaken, that number is bigger than any ACC regular member other than Clemson.
If not mistaken, I think both Ole Miss & Mississippi St. are both top 25 draws in viewership market shares nationally, it pays to be in such a football crazy part of the country & state. That’s certainly in their favor, along with having the 2nd most viewed college football program in the country just right to the East of them in Alabama, while also having the 4th most viewed college football program in the country just right to the West of them in LSU. I can tell you for 100% fact, if LSU or Alabama isn’t playing, well those fans are without a doubt watching Ole Miss & Mississippi St. if either one of them are playing. Those 2 programs pull a lot better numbers than what most people would think. There’s a lot of people between Memphis, Tennessee & the Gulf Coast. Than of course like I’ve already said, if an LSU or Alabama fan tells you that they don’t watch Ole Miss & Mississippi St. games, well than they’re lying to you because all of us do !!! Vanderbilt, well Vanderbilt has some awful deep roots with the majority of the other SEC member schools that spans across 3 different major conferences of the time, the SIAA, SIC & SEC. Former SEC commissioner Roy Kramer ( R.I.P.), the man that’s single handedly responsible for the current landscape of major college football. Everything from conference championship games, The Bowl Alliance, The Bowl Coalition, The father of the BCS System, to today’s CFP. Roy Kramer was the brains behind all of it. Well the SEC plucked who would become the single most Influential conference commissioner in the history of the NCAA from non other than Vanderbilt, where Roy Kramer was their Athletic Director. Roots run deep in the Southeast, we don’t turn our backs on our own, we never have. The other remaining SEC charter member schools Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi ( Ole Miss ), Mississippi St. & Tennessee will protect Vanderbilt just like they always have. Trust me, Arkansas, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Missouri, Texas & Oklahoma will go before Vanderbilt does. That’s the difference between the SEC and everybody else. Schools such as Vanderbilt & Mississippi St. get to sit at the same table with Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU & Tennessee !!! Any kind of Conglomerate of any sorts where everybody isn’t just as important as what the next one is, is certain to fail 100 out of 100 times, the proof is in the numbers. The SEC hasn’t lost a member school in over 60 plus years, yet they’ve had a lot schools asking to join the SEC !!! Nobody outside of the Southeastern part of the country should be crying about anything the SEC has done or achieved during their almost 100 year history of being a conference !! Why ??? Well that’s just simply because the SEC gave the rest of the country just exactly what they were asking for is why !!! What most people don’t realize is the fact that the rest of the country is 100% responsible for there even being an SEC. Back in the early years of the sport it was often said that football from the southeastern part of the country wasn’t as good as what football from the other parts of the country was. Therefore the 13 best football playing schools of the Southern Conference broke off and formed the purpose built Southeastern Conference to showcase southern football. Those 13 SEC charter member schools were Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi St., Suwanee College, Tennessee, Tulane & Vanderbilt. Since it’s inception in 1933 the SEC has gone on to become the single most dominant conference in the history of major college football. The SEC has an All-Time winning record against every single conference, with most of those head to head conference series are not even being close. The SEC is the only conference that’s had at least one of their member schools to be awarded a mythical FBS football national championship by at least one major NCAA recognized selector in every single decade since it’s inception in 1933 !! Like I said, the SEC has done nothing less than to just give the rest of the country just exactly what they were asking for. There’s no need to worry about Vanderbilt, because they have a forever home in the SEC !!
Ou booster I know says, don't be shocked if osu ends up in the sec... Said that's why osu has been silent in this event.... apparently sec still leaving the option of 2 or 4 teams... those could be anyone.... plus I think this so called alliance keeps one another from poaching, not the sec from poaching.... just don't think the smaller schools of those conferences have a say in anything, its Ohio state, Michigan and Stamford n ucla talkin... the most vulnerable teams are still vulnerable , in any conference. The bigger picture will be the status of power 5, if this takes place n the alliance does go forward as a voting block, how and who will be deliberating the status of power5,? Does the big 12 still get a vote? And make one conference the spoiler? If this is the case, you might see a sec, ESPN, big12 alliance...my opinion, sec can still raid acc... I don't think there is nothing stopping them.... sounds like this is a big 10 move only...
Torrie, all the teams have been silent, not just OSU. They are all playing their cards in the event they need to depend on big payouts from TX and OK. You don't get that if you end up doing the same thing they did.

@@averagecitizen8491 Washington too. And it was the impossibly distant bygone era of the 2000's when the Pac had some combo of USC, Oregon, and even Stanford up in the rankings possibly qualifying if the Playoffs existed perhaps in the same years. Conference bragging rights go in cycles, often dictated by when a school or two chance upon a generational coach and political will to drive success which raises all other schools profiles and suddenly a conference is dominant. It's just the SEC wanting to lock in their current success for all time that is different than past eras.
Not a one and that is the point. A new organization just for D1 B-ball is the future. (Football is already headed there.) Not the G League. And the NCAA Tournament will disappear and a new one will take it’s place. A bidding war with the various streaming entities along with another network NBC, ABC, FOX will cover all games including the tournament. Football will end up with 32 or 48 teams. They will have their own playoff and championship. But basketball will have to redesign the tournament.
I'm confused, expanding playoff to 12 helps everyone more than the Sec. limit teams a conference can have in playoffs to 3 maximum and guarantee all conference champions get invited.

No, it was about them not wanting to discuss an alliance with a conference that still has two SEC members in it.
Doing a great job man from Orlando
Very much appreciate that!
The answer is very obvious. The 8 schools add almost nothing to any media deal. They accutually make it worse on a per team number
Yep.
don't' tell some of those knuckle heads that. Some are saying how much viewers and $ the other Big 12 schools brought in minus OK and TX the last couple years. ( Now, wait a year AFTER Tx and OK are gone then see how much the remaining 8 matter!!

why would bowlsby do anything for ou/tu? no amount of info will get those bastards to stay big12
Okay. Just let us leave and we won’t make you give us the info we’re entitled to as members of this dying conference.
Nobody is more delusional right now than Kansas fans.

This is like a death sentence for OSU. How can Stillwater compete in recruiting with an SEC school in Oklahoma?
@Kyle Collier then sec has to add 1 more, who?
Since when did OSU compete w/ OU? It’s not like OU going to the SEC is going to take more players away from OSU.
def feels like the rest of the conferences would be better off expanding the playoff.. yea the sec may get 4-5 teams in every year, but they stand a good chance on getting 2 of the 4 every year as it is, idk..
Nil-semi-pro sports need to be separated from college or university experience and actual amateur sports brought back.
Unfortunately, the U.S. Supreme Court has killed amateur athletics and it doesn’t appear there is anyway to reverse that.

This would also weaken the AAC and make sure we are at worst the 5th best conference.

If WV had a chance to join the ACC they would have already left. Sadly the ACC has no intrest in WV.
What makes you think the ACC wants WVU? If the ACC added a team, other than ND, the revenue payouts per team will DECREASE. Adding a team actually hurts the conference. And the ACC is under contract till 2036.

The Big 10 and The ACC: We are not interested in poaching teams and expanding, after we have already poached teams and expanded.
Why the hell would you take anything ESPN has to say as gospel???? And the big ASSumption...that there's going to be a huge pot of gold for the next TV contracts from any major network. The possible manipulation by ESPN should be the focus.
Yeah, I take anything ESPN and Fox say with a huge grain of salt. They have an agenda to dissolve the Big 12 ASAP.
They got left out because there will be no Big 12. The Pac 12 is going to 14 and will leave only 6 schools left in the conference. Pac 12 commissioner already said they've been doing interviews.
It's going to be Houston and Texas Tech going to the PAC 12
TCU will not get in for 3 reasons.
1. Religious School
No they didn’t, big 12 screwed the big12
@@MrMgage13 You may have a point. I don't really followed the Big-12 all that much, until recently. So my view is from an outsider's perspective.
I haven't seen anything from TCU.
However, I don't think that will happen.
good stuff
Any idea if K-State at least reached out to the Pac 12? Sounds like the other 7 might be singing the same song as K-State (Big 12 stay together) but at the same time they're looking for another venue to sing at.
Every one of the b12 schools reached out to the P12, b10, ACC, & sec. OU even campaigned for OSU. They all said no to the Average 8.
The B1G & PAC are brothers and Rose Bowl is dad. B1G isn’t poaching PAC. Unless some school like Colorado wants to willingly switch
@@JohnSmith-gc1cm it’s still there with B1G & PAC. I think
SEC has no desire to add any of the remaining B12 schools, regardless if they have more in common with them. Also, what happens if 3 of the top 4 CFP teams are SEC? Seems to me the Alliance schools would see a 12 team playoff as an increased path to playoff participation.
Yep. Spot on.
Just put in a limit of one per Conference. Almost guarantees 3 spots for the alliance and puts a damper on any big school joining the SEC since it would be a bloodbath to make the playoffs from there
@@rubaiyat300 That it's not going to fly with 7 of the top 10 earning college athletic programs in the SEC.

Maybe it is time to consider if Bowlsby is the best for the Big XII moving forward.
That should have happened when Bowlsby was hired. The fact that the little eight still employ him shows you just how out of touch they are. Every AD in the little 8 should be fired right now.
That would really be stupid...the Japanese attacked. Impeach FDR!
@@machtschnell7452 You think Bowlsby is bad check out Kevin Warren of the B1G, most of the fan base was ready to shoot him over the crap decisions he made to cancel the season last year regarding COVID. Meanwhile Bowlsby figured out a way to make the season happen.
That depends on what 'moving forward' is. The Big12 has only two options: Merge with the AAC or wait to get offers from the other P5 and dissolve.
Only Okla State has shown interest in spending big dollars. Baylor builds a puny new stadium. TCU's fix-up is small time, too...
K-State has spent 200 million dollars on football facilities in the last decade
What is the benefit of the 3 conferences absorbing these other 8 teams?
None that I can think of. This could be the end of OSU. No Bedlam, no Cowboys.
I would suggest something like this:
East:
West Virginia
Iowa St.
Kansas
UCF
Cincinnati
Memphis
Houston
West:
Kansas St
OK St.
Texas Tech
TCU
Baylor
BYU
Boise St.
Maybe not the perfect solution, but not too terrible all things considered.
@@michaelandrew677 I believe Houston and Cincinnati and then USF and UCF and leave it at 12 is better. No conference is coast to coast.
I could see Nebraska wanting back in big 12 since they wouldn’t have to deal with Texas and OU -but mostly Texas.
But they’re getting that BIG 10 💰
@@ssgus3682 BYU is the most valuable and most widely watched of all the G5 level schools. If the objective is to improve the value of the conference (and it is), then BYU should be the first school you invite, regardless of geographic issues.

I think there is much more to the 3 conference alliance than you know. We'll know pretty soon, (Maybe this week) what the initial alliance is going to be about.
Odd calling universities "stuffy" for wanting to prioritize academics. What?
Since the Big 12 is not in the alliance, these conferences most certainly can poach the Big 12 dry

Bob Bowlsby is to blame. Time for him to throw another fit.
Bob Bowlsby has got to go. Failure.
Mr Bowlsby is too poor
Cuz its soon to be defunct.
But without national brands like USC, , Stanford, and Oregon.
Of course the Big12 wasn’t invited to the alliance. Because it’s going to get poached.
I think it's worse. They're just going to be left behind.
So funny... there’s only a couple other schools that the SEC would be interested in now that they have Texas and Oklahoma 👊
Still think TECH & OSU end up in the PAC12

Agreed . It makes too much sense
I see them taking Tech and Houston. OSU if they go to 16 but I can't imagine who the other team would be.
I heard the sec is leaving ncaa football, to make some kinda disney conference. so that could be good news for the big 12
(with a few more teams).

You make a good enough case for Tech, but not for OSU. As I said elsewhere, I would guess Tech and Houston might get invites.

If they come out with anything but
“ the landscape is changing and doing nothing at this time makes sense! We have agreed to not poach each other and to allow the Big 12 to be considered for membership in other conferences as they deem appropriate! Action on their part is in their court.
ESPN is responsible for this, poaching No. This whole thing is being manipulated by ESPN, follow the money

Go BUFFS
Its really simple as to why the Big 12 was left out. Big 12 is a lame duck and even if the conference adds schools they will just be a beefier AAC. It's also a possible source for poaching by all 3 of these conferences in the future.
Big 10/14 was never going to steal pac12 teams
Funny, that's what the Big 12 thought about OU and Texas.
@@sully9427 Really? They tried to leave before.
IN YOUR FACE Three tier Major college football is the NEW NORMAL.
“Actually the Big 12 was invited. I called both Joe and Chris. Did they not forward the message?”
John
If your reporting is accurate and a major concern of the “Big Three” was to agree philosophically not to poach and I quote “each other’s conferences” then leaving the Big12 out makes sense.
Big 12 and AAC need to merge
Go ahead and say it....it was Texas fault...
Damn right...This is the second conference they destroyed because of greed.

Eventually, there will be four conferences that will each send their champion to the Final Four
SEC, Big Ten, ACC, and Pac 12.

I still believe that the 6 of the 8 will land in the Pac/acc/B1G.... no o don't think the SEC will expand further.... but the others will go to 16 teams each
A 12 team playoff helps everyone else.. the sec already gets 2 teams in the 4... pac has yet to..

I can see KU going into another conference but independent in basketball
How many D1 basketball teams are independent?
Not a one and that is the point. A new organization just for D1 B-ball is the future. (Football is already headed there.) Not the G League. And the NCAA Tournament will disappear and a new one will take it’s place. A bidding war with the various streaming entities along with another network NBC, ABC, FOX will cover all games including the tournament.
Football will end up with 32 or 48 teams. They will have their own playoff and championship. But basketball will have to redesign the tournament.
So another conference would accept the football program without the basketball program???
I'm confused, expanding playoff to 12 helps everyone more than the Sec. limit teams a conference can have in playoffs to 3 maximum and guarantee all conference champions get invited.
