- Prep with me as I put 50 lbs of rice into 5-gallon buckets. We go through this much rice in about 6 months. So 2 of these lasts us for a year. This is for short-term food storage. And we get the rice straight out of the bucket, which is in our pantry. Enjoy!

So happy that you are taking the time to show people how to store food for long term storage. In the near future having extra food on hand will become very important. Many of the large cities will start to be destroyed one at a time by natural disasters. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Love your name! I’m working on water more. And I’ll start dehydrating again soon.
I put a large mylar bag inside the bucket first, then fill as i try and settle the rice to fit as much as possible. i can get roughly 35lbs into a 5 gallon bucket. throw 5000cc worth of oxygen absorber with a few moisture absorbers aswell. Seal the bag with hair iron. this is for best results.
Thanks for this. I’ll do that when I restock this.
Buckets with gamma lids need testing...most not airproof. Put water in it and turn upside down.
If it leaks water...it ain't airtight.
The gamma lids i have have a seal on the twist of center
Add a bay leaf between layers of rice that will keep the bugs away ...
Thank you. I started doing that.
New Subscriber here, from Hawaii and yep, we eat Rice, Rice and did I say Rice, LOL Bought two 50lb bags Blue Rose ( Short Grain) Rice and two 20lb Long Grain and plan of getting two 20lb Brown Rice and husband being Italian, I got extra noodles of all types for him- I did read that Bay Leaves keeps the the critters out of your dry goods so that I do , Bless you all and Happy Prepping
Just ordered some gamma lids. Thanks for sharing!
Nice! I see it's now $8.99. But it is still the best price.
Rice is life! Can’t have adobo and pinakbet without rice!
You really can't. #riceislife
You can get free food grade buckets from your local bakery store or from any restaurant that uses pickles. I just call and ask if they have any food grade buckets that they are willing to get rid of or sale. I’ve heard some places will charge a $1 and some just give away for free.
Thank you for the video. I just purchased 50 pounds of jasmine rice and was trying to figure out how to store it so I can get to it easily and so it will stay fresh.
For long term storage of rice you will need to pour the rice into Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. The 5 gallon Mylar bags are very convenient. Then place the Mylar bags into the 5 gallon buckets for long term storage. As she says in the video, pouring rice directly into 5 gallon buckets is for short storage.
Jasmine rice is my favorite. I will check out tractor supply. Thank you.
I just checked now. The 5-gallon bucket and gamma lids are available. But I have noted that both prices increased again. So $3.99 and $9.99.
@@SimplyCherie Lowes and home depot sell them for much less.
That’s a much better price for Gamma lids than I’ve been paying on Amazon!
Normal 5 gallon buckets from walmart are made from food grade plastic and only cost a few bucks, labeling them "food grade" is an ABSOLUTE SCAM as they are made from the exact same plastic but charge tons more! Not to mention if you are also heat sealing ur rice and beans in mylar with oxygen absorbers as u should be, the plastic of the jug will not matter! MOST 5 gallon buckets are food grade and they tell you the type of plastic used on the bottom of the bucket, look for "hdpe 2" the 2 will be above hdpe in the center of a triangle!
Right!!!!
Knockoff version of Gamma lids are Twister lids. In Az sold at Winco just under $8 for the 5 gallon and under six fo 2 gallon. The large ones fit Tractor supply buckets.
Thanks for the tip!
I buy my food grade buckets from Walmart. They are plain white, and there is no advertising printed on them. I hate the store name printed all over my buckets! The Gamma lids are great.
Thanks for the heads up about buckets from Walmart.
I've seen a lot of reviews where people are saying that the gamma lids aren't sealed air tight. I was thinking about getting some but that changed my mind. I've heard sealed mylar bags with oxygen absorbers will do the job though.
I’m not sure how to actually test the lids. But yes, I’ll do Mylar bags.
@@SimplyCherie You fill the bucket with water and put it upside down and see if it leaks. You don't have to fill it all the way obviously. It is believed by some that the molded plastic that the seal rides on (on the screw off portion) has lines that cause the breakage of the seal. I don't own any of them so I can not tell you if it's possible to file down the lines and make them flush to make them seal properly.
Lol.... "Try not to touch this part on the gamma lid to keep it clean, but it's o.k. for the dog to stick his nose on them."
It's hard to catch that while looking through a lens and filming. I miss my Molly. I wish she were here to stick her nose.
Hi I’m new here. So if i have those lids and I’m planning on storing long term what happens once i open it after a year? Will i have to use it all very soon? Will the gamma lid seal it shut again without me worrying about it going bad
I just bought some of them screw on lids from Lowe’s they were seven dollars and some change a little bit cheaper
That's a decent price.
In your opinion, are bugs that bad in a SHTF situation? I've only Sams club to purchase 50 lb bags from in my area. (for around $20.) I've seen reviews about bugs. Bugs aren't that concerning to me compared to dying. Thoughts?
I don't know if you are being funny. But your question did amuse me.
Don't forget to put your bay leaves in your bucket I love your video
You can always freeze infested rice and sift out bugs, same with flour as long as it's not to badly infested and you're hungry enough...
I've also heard you can put food grade diatomaceous earth in rice that has been infested and all the bugs will be dead on the bottom.
@@JohnnySahn oh wow, that's handy to know. Have to look onto that. Thanks!
All you have to do to put the lids with 2 pieces !! Turn upside down and sit on until it seals its self !
Hi David. I’ll do that next time.
Gamma lids are 12.99 now ... crazy
Yeah, bummer. Nov 2020 - $7.99; Dec 2020 - $8.99; Dec 2022 - $12.99
I have food grade buckets without the gamma lid just reg.lid is that ok for storage
I am a salvadoran living here in the philippines, marry to a filipina for a family of 6 we go through 100 pounds of rice per month. I just bought 50, 50 pound sacks of rice for 2 years. I will also store different types of beans and other foods long term. I do have a good size storage place.
Yes! Amazing that you can store that much rice. I’m stocking up on rice again soon.
Hi. Great vid. I see you put the rice straight in the bucket and to be used within 6 months. But how do you think the rice will be if stored, say 1 year or more? ( straight in the bucket)
Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers
What happens if you keep the rice in the original bag and just scoop rice from there would it develop mold through time?
If it’s humid, I’d store it better in jars or Mylar bags. We live in AZ so it’s dry plus we eat through it regularly. Mason jars and a vacuum sealer work great. I store some rice that way.
How come you don't use oxygen absorbers to put on top of the rice before you put the lid on
That dog is thinking she's pouring dog food !!!
Oh that's right!
Why can’t you use regular lids?
WARNING;They say dont buy rice from the china store because half the rice is plastic❤❤❤❤❤❤. also the buckets need to be food grade.
Looking at this video now and the price of those gamma lids went from $8.99 to $13.99 at TSC as of 10/9/2023.
Yeah. That’s a lot. 55% increase.
No mylar bags? I plan on storing rice in buckets, not sure if I should use mylar or this way....
I'm kinda new at this!
Yes, use mylar bags if you are storing the rice for long term. Then you put an oxygen absorber and seal the bag and close the gamma lid. But for us, we use this up in 6 months.
@@SimplyCherie what happens if you don’t use the mylar bags for long term storage?
Give up rice? Funny!
Rice is life.
How many pounds of rice fit in the 5 gallon bucket, please ?
48 lbs
So I can just buy the bucket and put the rice straight in the bucket with the gamma lids if I would be using that for 3 people within 6 months and it will still be good
It works for us.
Oops I bought the normal TSC lids
Do they work well? I would think it's fine depending on how long you want the food stored.
What about bugs and eggs? Do I freeze? If so process?
Hi Richard. Putting rice in the buckets will keep bugs out. This would take up space I would rather have for meat and seafood in my deep freezer. I have heard of freezing rice before putting them into the buckets. But we will use this in 6 months. For long term rice storage, I put it in mylar bags, oxygen absorber, seal, then keep in buckets.
Add bay leaves.
@Richard Parker, when you air tight seal a bucket, whatever bugs might be in the rice, will die without oxygen.
YUK! Your storage area should be kept clean, and you should have tightened the lid first, before you clean off the garbage.
Are these air tight?
Yes, you have to put the lid on correctly.
