Thank you Dan, you really created something of value here to the beginning voice over talent out there. So many voice over professionals are afraid to put out any information they might not get paid for- to them this video would probably have a $50 price tag at least.
@violetr0se Check out our full website, we have a few more videos and a voice evaluation line you can call to speak with someone on our staff directly.
Incredible advice! Very useful! Thank you so much. Those of you who are pointing out his disability.... it's always like this: THE BEST financial director has/had financial problems himself, the marriage counsellor is usually divorced and a dietist was overweight before... etc...etc. You know the saying: we all teach, we both need to learn!!! :-) xxxx
This is awesome to me, someone first considering VO after 20 years talking on the phone for a living, on two levels: One, the wealth of excellent advice in under 10 min. from an obviously seasoned veteran pro, delivered in an easy-to-understand, CONVERSATIONAL manner; and two, it's very encouraging--and this is meant with all due respect--that a person can succeed in this field despite having a vocal defect such as a pronounced lisp, if they have aptitude and perseverance. Well done, sir.
@apacheslim The only surefire way I know of is to speak in a low voice as much as you can. The downside here is that you'll cause permanent damage to your larynx. A famous example of this is Michael Dorn - he spent so long forcing his voice lower to play Worf, that it's damaged his throat and lowered his natural tone by 2 whole octaves.
I think he'd be excellent at doing daffy duck or Bugs Bunny.....I find his lisp funny in an entertaining way. I could listen to him all day....now that's a true natural talent. People spend many many hours training trying to speak with a lisp. The man is a natural.Awesome voice! Great advice!
hi are u a voice over teacher, cuz i would like training from u ,i live in melbourne so yer.i would like to do cartoon movies like toy story and shrek and also ads like for pro active and hair product ads .plez let me know if u can help me thx

Very informative! I typed that smiling too! :) Thanks for the tips. Just off the top of your head, which do you think is more difficult to audition for, voice over acting or acting for film?
@th3bff So you're just going to ignore what I said, aren't you. Why are you even watching this video if all you're doing is posting rude comments. Go watch Manners for Humans.
Excellent advice... not only do you know what you are talking about, you are able to teach others what you know.. Thanks for taking the time and effort to make this video!!!!
@MangoliPresents ivona - just google it, that's the best text to speech in existence, and you can do samples on their page. then you can actually record them on your computer, you don't have to actually buy it :)
It was 15 years ago..so I could be wrong.. but I may have taken one of your classes in Providence.. and did the demo tape - lots of fun! ua-cam.com/video/zJMQvSKTZa0/v-deo.html
This all sounds great but if you need help with the technical aspects of this business, forget it. You can have the greatest voice but You will never get technical help from SAV. If you lack experience in this area they will drop you like a ton of bricks and still charge you for time they spent with you.
On the outset Dan may have a lisp but don't let that stray you from the message-solid information from years of really listening to talent and knowing how the human voice can express, convey, emote and move a listener. Enjoy the "vocal mystery" idea!! Thank you Dan!
Dan Levine has done a tremendous job in coaching a novice like me! Thanks! As far as I am concern, those who posted with 4 letter words need to hold their tongues and show respect to the speaker.
@MangoliPresents I know the Mac OS has a built in speech to text, but I've never used it before. Sorry I can't help more on this one! Let us know if you find anything good.

Wow...did I need to see this video! I'm brand new to voice over and trying to get my career off the ground. Thank you so much for all this valuable advice, Dan! You can tell when you are hearing sound advice....because it all makes sense! I took a lot of notes of some of the key recommendations you make in this video and have pasted them into my vocal booth as a constant reminder. Thank you!
Learning how to spell correctly and how to use proper grammar are a good start! Now, that we've left 80% of the people on the Internet behind us... LOL!
Thank you so much for posting this informative video. I've been interested in voice over acting for a while, but without any background it's been extremely helpful to find advice like this as a starting ground. The resources you've posted are also helpful, I may do a little more research and then call the evaluation line you mentioned! Thanks again!
Sir you are awesome and clearly have a hang on this "biz". I'm just sorting out a few pieces for my voice reel for my agent and WOW your tips are amazing! needless to say i thank you greatly. Cheers
Thank you for sharing your expertise! Your tips are very helpful and take time to master. In particular I will be working on variety in each sentence as you demonstrated.

Donals Sutherland is a great example of the where the voice and personality shake hands
@MangoliPresents google "atnt voice" and click the first hit. it's really good.
It's also human nature to work on your greatest weakness; if you can conquer that, you're a pretty well rounded individual, wouldn't you say?
is it just me, or does he have a lisp? oh well, adds more character right?
Great video. Thank you.
