It's terrific to hear Carreras in his early years. What an incredible career he has had, with a persistence, artistry, and longevity almost anyone in any field would envy. His model of professionalism, grit, and grace gets me through tough days.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable rendition of this famous piece. I find Carreras voice much in the mold of Di Stephano, Bergonzi etc. I can understand why he is favored by many opera lovers. It comes down to taste. My personal favorite tenor is Bjorling but I get great joy from many tenors. Incidentally, it was Carreras who said on radio that in the business, Bjorling was known as "The Voice". So, have your favorites but realize that there is pleasure to be had from many quarters.
Carreras meu tenor favorito.
What J.Carreras sings beautifully cannot be surpassed. This is just one example. Sublime singing indeed I think with him I hear M.Caballe who is amazing too
This is the most beautiful tenor voice ever! I heard God Carreras live sometime in 1978 - one could live a lifetime on that single moment of beauty! And was he handsome!!!!
What I would give to have been able to see him in this performance! Although it's hard to think of Carreras being a rat like the duke. But charming, oh my yes.....
@Englishtenor2 he is my favourite always of the three tenors its just the intensity of his personality that gives him the edge I think He always has to put twice the effort into his performance then anyone else I rate him up there with Caruso he does indeed look like a young Brando and also very like Montgomery Clift if you remember him from the Misfits
an exceptional recording by carreras. for 2 other great recordings of carreras when he was still in good voice. see "jose carreras before the fall" and "jose carreras before the fall 2" equally amazing. =)
I'm not comparing. It's disrespectful... I'm only saying that Carreras' voice in his prime, was the most beautiful voice of the XXth century. Maybe not has strong as Pava, or as high as Domingo, or as perfect as Kraus, but beautiful, velvety, sweet, glorious... and I'm stopping here...
I would rather compare him to the grand handsome voice of GDS, of course not in later years. Both have the inlay of gorgeous youthful sparks. Both suffered the heavy tear later in career. Pavarotti has a very small lyric voice, Domingo was great in early years. But both are extremely overrated.
Che bellissima musica ! One of my absolute favorite pieces that Maestro Verdi ever composed.Carreras sound superb here. But does anyone out there know who the soprano, baritone and mezzo were in this 1973 performance ? Mille grazie inmylife9 for sharing this wonderful piece with us opera lovers.
Bellissima voce chiara senza limite
Carreras siempre como gigante de la ópera
What a pity his illness in 1988 had him less blessed vocally ! Listen to the Bohème at the Met in 1982 prior to that is pure delight

Vero voce simile a Di Stefano
beautiful timbre, love his voice so much, gorgeous Duke!
Young Carreras...the most beautiful tenor voice ever!
Bjorling !
@@ricardobedini5345 agree, yet Jose is special, especially for this young handsome Duke, to let her Die for.
I don`t mean to quarrel, but please find and listen to Wieslaw Ochman Nadir`s aria from Bizet`s "Pearl fishers" and then tell about beautiful voice,OK?
@@misscameroon8062 that one is great, but Jose's voice is special, and there are list of beautiful tenors...
I am agree with you

Wonderful! I love you, Josep!
Very good voice and a very handsome man. This is a reason to miss him very, very much!
What I would give to have been able to see him in this performance! Although it's hard to think of Carreras being a rat like the duke. But charming, oh my yes.....
who can be better doing this role than Jose? So handsome voice and looks, full of youth in his singing.

Please as high as Domingo or perfect like Kraus with his ugly sound only singing loud and sharp?
I would rather compare him to the grand handsome voice of GDS, of course not in later years.

Pavarotti has a very small lyric voice, Domingo was great in early years. But both are extremely overrated.

Could the coloratura be Blanche Thebom? And I'm not remember the soprano's name right now, but this quartet is just wonderful!! THANKS!
I'd love to know the others!
Who else is singing in this clip and where was this performed?

The great quartet is a bit of a mess in places here, but, oh, the young Carreras!! What a voice it was!
@Englishtenor2
It's just you...
@Englishtenor2 He does a bit. God, if Marlon Brando could sing like this,.... He'd have knocked Frank Sinatra out for the count in Guys and Dolls.
perdonado
Keine!
And, I'm not queer!!!
So what?
