Oboe Reed Adjustment (level 2) | Accessing the lower crow

- Hello oboists and oboe fans! In this week's video I adjusted a reed for you which had a similar issue to what I hear often from oboists: you're having trouble accessing a two-octave crow. This is a devastating issue and I solve the problem here on my own reed using only the tools from Sandpiper Oboe Boutique's Reed Finishing Kit, available here: sandpiperoboe....
If you're a beginner with oboe reed adjustments definitely check my part one video here: • How to FIX your OBOE R...

I’ve just got back to playing after a 25 yr break and never ever knew the reed had to crow to a C 😮 Thanks Ron your videos are a life saver!
Very helpful; thank you! It was instructive that you didn't simply go straight to "the problem," but rather approached the reed as a whole.
So glad you enjoyed it!
Very informative! It was really nice to see you scrape the reed and the structure of how it is constructed. I think having the visual aspect of how the reed looks is extremely helpful! Thank you!💜
You're welcome! Thank you for watching!!
The camera angles 👏🏼👏🏼 loved seeing everything in real time!
Thanks!!! So glad you enjoyed it! ☺️☺️☺️
I'm quite new to oboe and making reeds, and I'm definitely going to have to try some of these suggestions! I had thought about scraping the reed upside down as I tend to struggle getting a very smooth transition between the windows and the heart, but I hadn't heard of anyone else doing it.
Great video, thanks. Could you give tips on adjusting a reed to correct flat g's and c's on all octaves?
Hi Ari. Thanks for your fantastic videos that have helped me so much. One thing that I seem to have a recurring battle with is that I get the peep working well at a C, but then my lower crow comes out too high at a D or E. I can't seem to work out why this happens or how to tune the lower crow without changing the peep tuning. Any advice?
New to your site but really appreciating these videos. I know you have had a collab with Sandpiper for a reed making/adjusting kit, but they are sold out on everything. Do you have suggestions for beginner reed making kits? It seems like online people seem to like the Charles Double Reed Kits but it's hard to find many concrete reviews. Thanks so much!
edited to add that I'm returning to oboe after about 10 years (med school/residency/parenting got in the way), but am playing regularly in a community band now and am really feeling how helpful it would be if I were more competent in reed adjustment, if not reed making eventually.
Really good! I liked your sideways technique on the blend. First time I saw that. I’ll try it. What type of lamp do you use for reed making? I just caught a glimpse of it.
Thanks Kate! Nothing special for the light! I was using a document reader to record my scraping and then I have an ikea desk lamp that I use regularly. Let me know about the sideways scrape and the results you get from it!
@@oboeari I did try it. It is helpful. I was able to get the crow back without taking too much cane off the blend. I think it’s a good “in-between” technique.
I would love to know more about how you construct the tip of the reed!
Thanks Allyson! I do have a video where I scrape a blank: ua-cam.com/video/fflA3K1-NB4/v-deo.html. Hopefully this helps!
Hi, Ron. When you're adjusting the reed (or better yet, going from blank onwards), have you soaked it in water? Or are you working it dry? Love your videos, by the way!
Thanks Rosalynn, always soaked, never dry!
@@oboeari Fantastic--thanks, Ron!
what is your limit on how much you should clip a reed if it is under pitch on the crow? Do you have a specific length from cork to tip that works well consistently?
Great question!! Usually my reeds end up around 70-70.5mm. I don't have too much success with reeds that I have to clip to 69, and definitely no shorter than that - those get instantly scrapped.
interesting, never though about doing a total crosscut from the tip to heart.
Hi!!!! I just started playing oboe and the first time I tried it it was easy to make a sound out of, now I try and it’s very hard. I soaked the Reed but it has a little chip in it. Could that be the problem?
It does sound like a potentially damaged reed! 😩
@@oboeari Thanks! I should probably get a new one. I figured out that I wasn’t blowing right and that helped it to!
Do you have an tips from going for Eb to F? It’s really hard for me.
Does your oboe have the "left F" key? If not, you can go from Eb to F by simply lifting the middle finger of your right hand.
@@oboeari it doesn’t but that second part really helped. Thanks!
