What if our minds could live after our bodies have died? What if mortality became obsolete? Steven Kotler, award-winning journalist and executive director of the Flow Research Collective, has studied these seemingly sci-fi ideas, and it turns out that they’re not so fictional, after all. In fact, mind-uploading technology is expected to be available as early as 2045.
“Digital immortality” would have its upsides; we could preserve the minds of modern geniuses and have their guidance through future conflicts. Or, alternatively, things could get dark, as we have never before interfered with such complex evolutionary processes. Kotler explains that the ability to store human personalities and consciousness on computers poses profound ethical and societal questions.
By developing and using this mind-uploading technology, we are simultaneously redefining what it means to be a human being, pushing the boundary between life, death, and whatever is in between. It seems, whether we’re ready or not, that it is going to happen soon.

Do we inhabit a multiverse? Do we have free will? What is love? Is evolution directional? There are no simple answers to life’s biggest questions, and that’s why they’re the questions occupying the world’s brightest minds.
    So what do they think?
How is the power of science advancing understanding? How are philosophers and theologians tackling these fascinating questions?

We still don't know if the self really exist or is just an illusion created by the sum of all cognitive processes, in which the only thing you need to copy is the personality, the way of his/her emotions, the way of his/her thoughts, his/her behavior, but in that case, when you die, you won't perceive anything again, for the body that perpetuated that experience is dead, but a new body where all that personality is recreated, is a new perception, the old one die with the body that created it.
For if the self is not the thoughts, not the emotions, not the personality, not the observation, then what is it? Is it real? Or is it just thought coming to the realization that it is something of "itself", and it has it's own emotions, preferences, etc., and then "thought" thought that self and its own is real?

I am impressed by reading your thoughts.
I believe that everything is chemistry, our brain is a form to complex chemistry too. Our emotions and memories are stored in the form of chemicals. If those chemicals were different, or there were Nitrogen atoms in place of Carbon atoms in those chemical compounds, then I would have a different memory.
If we develop a technique through which we can create/alter the chemicals ourselves then I will be able to transfer myself or my personality into any human body, because my personality and my identity are just chemicals in my brain.
Similarly, after my death, I won't go to hell or heaven because me "myself" as consciousness won't exist.

When you upload your mind into the computer while you're still very much alive, does that mean there's two of you now?
Nope. The same as when you're dead, whatever it is in the computer, it ain't you.

I always wondered if this kind of transference was even vaguely possible. I always thought the more likely scenario was changing the body and brain from the inside out, enhancing as we go, over a period of months or years to arrive at an improved state. A more powerful mind in a longer lasting, more resilient body. I called it the "scaffolding" approach, using the existing tissues as scaffolding to build something new, transferring function gradually to new structures.

The most likely thing if you try that. The person will die and any uploaded stuff will fake being them thinking it's them. As it's not the original that perceived life before.
They would be gone and dead. As a copy with no actual emotions and no actual life plays as them
And... There's no way to test it either. No way at all to tell if that downloaded mind is actually the person or they were just replaced.

@@Wanderlauch we as a species were already on the wrong path the day one of us tried to comfort one another, tried to sooth their pain and tried to heal, be the process not so professionally medical, and we are billions years too early to seriously talk about ethics, and only until we have all evolved into one singularity, ethics is but history in fantasy

Those are mostly matters of perception. I doubt we can get rid of pain and sorrow, and I really don't think we should try to get rid of them. Pain and sorrow can be useful feedback, even if not pleasant.
