After watching your channel for a couple of years, my appreciation and love has grown for so many variety of plants! Echinacea is definitely one of them! I used to pass by so many plants and flowers and just go straight to a couple of my "go-to's" every year, but now, I stop and get so excited when I recognize (and can name) what I've learned from you! Thank you so much! My garden is evolving and becoming more beautiful because of you!
Same. I’ve never liked ornamental grasses until I started watching Laura a few years ago. & never thought about shrubs or structure in my garden for that matter. I have so many garden dreams now. Thank you Aaron & Laura!! 💛🌿🐝🌸
100%! My plant knowledge has increased by far from watching GA for the last 4-5 years! I love how she doesn’t just plant, she educates and gives us the “tag stats” Of each plant as well. HUGE garden answer 🪴 fan!
☕️Happy Friday to all! Laura, you have the best ideas and ‘eye’ for just to plant where. I love the echinacea plants-when I first planted them in my yard years ago, the color choices were minimal. Now there’s a color for everyone. Thank you for planting a little bit of memories of my days in the garden … you are a bright respite from all the sadness happening to so many right now. Stay safe, be well, and keep crawling, Samantha Grace ! 🍼🍃🦋
A few years ago, I planted 'Rainbow Marcella' (I think that's the name). It was supposed to be orange. Last year it bloomed the most glorious icy pink (I prefer cool colors) so I bought another one. That one IS orange, maybe it's in more sun. Unfortunately, I think I stepped on the first plant in early spring and killed it because it never came back. 😟
I have been watching for a few years and never commented, but seeing your choices of echinacea made me want to join in. I just planted Sombrero Flamerco Orange and I am loving the color! I’ll be on the hunt for the color’s you have chosen. Thank you.
I love how all the plants come together. After watching your channel I am going to purchase tool you used to dig hole. Having a shoulder injury I have limited planting. Thank you for your video I can now resume gardening.
You've often said that you don't have a formal plan when planting. How do you keep it from looking like a hot mess once it's all done? Meaning, I've seen people plant at random and it looks terrible. Is there at least a "formula" you use when planting, because your beds always look gorgeous 😍
Today’s planting shows some of that: plant multiples of the same variety in a drift to move the eye along, plant shorter things at the front of a bed, getting taller as you move back, larger things like shrubs and trees to provide weight and structure, keep colors cohesive but add in contrast. I spent years of just plunking a single plant of something I liked into my garden before I stumbled upon the idea of planting several of the same thing.
Drifts. Large swaths of color are restful on the eyes. I think lots of different plants make the garden look cluttered. And I'm a "plant collector" or used to be.
The echinacea is beautiful and will look so lovely out on the new property; the new property is my favorite place. Watching you is the first thing I do every morning and it's always so sad when you say, "See you in the next one" and I have to wait 24 hours to see more. On some days I just go back and find older episodes to watch especially ones on the new property and with Aaron flying the Drone. To the both of you I say thank you so very much for all your hard work and letting us be right there with you. I love it so much.
I am so enjoying the transformation of the new property. Halfway through the summer, here in South Jersey, I leave the seed heads on. The gold finches love the seeds, and I enjoy watching the antics of these little birds.
Last year, I deadheaded my echinacea to spread the seed in another area. Except I didn't do it right away. I just plopped the seed heads in an empty container and the next day almost all of them were gone. Squirrels.
When you go to a nursery and see all the colors together it’s breathtaking! If only the elk would leave mine alone. I have to find a new home for them inside the garden fence
Me, too. In Michigan, I had coneflowers practically growing out of concrete. Here in Massachusetts, I have trouble getting them going at all, and then the rabbits eat all but the stems. 😫
Liquid deer and rabbit fence spray stinks but it keeps the deer away from my hydrangeas, roses and supertunia vista bubblegum and snowdrift. (Stinks like fish guts).
I’ve been putting off planting new perennials in my garden cuz I didn’t want to deal with all the digging 😅 that drill thing you have seems really handy!
Laura is such an inspiration! I am envious that she can do so much of her own digging ("auging") and planting. I am doing lots of back stretches and strengthening exercises o that I can get into my garden digging and planting more easily!
Laura, your garden 🌹 just keeps getting lovelier and lovelier as the days go by.I love all the colours and keep on growing. All the best for the weekend❤️
I have tried echinacea a few times in 3b zone in northern Ontario Canada and they never over winter but I think I want to try again. I love the different varieties.
Hello to our neighbors and friends in Canada. You'll be surprised to hear and may not be at all close to your zone since I'm 7a but I bought the PW echinacea plants and have left them in their planters for maybe 2 plus years, not purposely just ran out of time, forgot all about them or other things going on and for the life of me I can't kill them. They've survived thru 7deg winter, snow, ice etc and they still pop up in the planter I bought them in. I'm a completely less than novice grower but try every year. But when I do plant them in the ground (other plants) they end up dying. I do everything as in video's but no matter what they end up dying, yet they live on in the same planter I bought them in. I even tell my local nursery owner where I buy them from the same story. I'm going to try them in fabric planters to see what happens. Maybe it's the drainage... I just don't know. Wanted to share and tell you not to give up. Now I'm off the plant 2 more in fabric pots (Root Pouch 15gal) just to see what happens. Take care our Canada friends.
busy morning so just now tuning in... and ohhh how i love these!! i have some that don't look great but they are surviving; i think they're getting too much water though so will work on that.. i am determined that i get these somewhere in my yard, lol... those are gorgeous, all of them, and are going to be just fabulous along that pathway.. can't wait!! aren't you just having the most fun!!! happy for you! 🙂 ❤ thanks for the video!! 🙂 ❤
Hey Laura, just wanted to say thanks, I remember you have said if it doesn’t bring you joy it’s ok to get rid of plants. A couple of my summer pots were getting tired and I was getting rid of them. My husband stopped me and said,” why are you doing that they still have some time left”. I said, “ Laura said it’s okay” 😂😂
I read this to my husband and he laughed and said, "So Laura is the the Garden Goddess" . I laughed and said," yep...that sounds right". 🤣 She is for me for sure.
I completely agree! Up until I found this channel, I felt this huge sense of "commitment" to the plants in my garden, just because I had spent money for them. Many of them were not bringing me any happiness nor did they add anything to my garden anymore. In one of Laura's videos she said that it's ok to dig out / give away any plant that doesn't bring you happiness, so I dug away! Gave away so many hostas to friends and posted ads to give away the plants. This was one of the best things I learned from Laura.
I love the cantaloupe! I was hoping it was going to be a Monrovia plant since we have more of that brand around here. I did see Monrovia pots, didn’t I? Maybe they’re not specific to PW. I will keep my eye out for it, you never know. I’ve been surprised before. It’s like finding a prize in the garden center!
@@brooke1615 …. I live in the PNW (western Washington state). I have purchased a couple every year for about five years and never got them to come back. Fertilized and watered. Never came back. Last fall I planted white and purple plants off the clearance rack from Lowe’s and they ALL came back and are flourishing! I think I finally just stopped babying them. Got too busy caring for elderly parents. They’re so easy and beautiful. My husband even planted a packet of perennial wildflower seeds last year that had echinacea. One survived and is doing great! I think I just needed to leave them be. Good luck! They’re so beautiful and interesting with the rigid cone.
Yeah they definitely fall into the category of preferring to be left alone in a sunny spot. I planted mine near my lavender as a reminder of how to care for them! A one time fertilizer in the spring and forget them.
@@denisedorsey2889 …that’s great! Because that’s where I planted my white echinacea… in between my lavenders…and you’re right! I left them alone like lavender and they’re doing great. However the wild rabbits like to eat the new leaves and I have to spray repellent for that. 😊
Who *actually* believes Laura is not going to plant tons of flowers on the new property? 😉🥰 Beautiful, as always, Laura. Thank you for encouraging us all!! 💕
I have fallen in love with the cone flowers this year ! Found one that is called 'Sombrero ' . Thanks for showing the other colors , I will be getting some of those also!
I find it a little amusing about using an auger to dig holes. My yard is nothing but sand and if I used an auger for the holes, by the time I turned around to pick up the plant, the hole would be filled in!🤣🤣🤣
So beautiful. I need to harvest some more potatoes but it's really bad smoky outside on the west side of Oregon. We have a smoke advisory til Tuesday.. I hope your area isn't too bad. Be safe! I will just enjoy your videos with all the lovely flowers in your area. Great job!
My cone flowers are in a bed in the front of our house with a lot of clay and they are going crazy. we cant get anything else to grow there. but they are doing amazing. I even pulled them up and pulled the babies off when i was weeding the bed and there were so many babies. They also lasted through the TX freeze and came back stronger.
You just got a bug up my rear. Going to my flamingo road nursery in davie fl. See what I can put on my screen in patio. It's not much 16x12. Compare you your 5 acres Your 3 plus new property is looking so lovely.
Off topic - I've been very disappointed in the variety and health of the plants at my local nursery. I remember seeing a deal last spring for a "kit" of I think 200 bare root perennials. Kind of a jumbo of plants that go 'well" with each other. Of course, I think it was from Lowes or Amazon. What is the benefit of ordering bare roots (from a nursery) and getting potted plants? I'm assuming that you would have to wait a few seasons for the roots to grow enough to bloom?
I love the echinacea!!!! I think I overwatered my plants that were in containers this year... We have had a lot of rain and then very high heat & humidity- they seemed so droopy I watered, come to find out... was the darn HEAT that made them droopy!!! :( I did terrible this year...oh well, live and learn!
Very interesting tid-bit about the deer 🦌 resistants with these plants. I do have to deal with quite a large herd of deer around our homestead. I have fencing around every tree, every garden. 😥 Always searching out for deer proof plants. Love Echinacea in my gardens
Ahh, there were some echinacea in the garden ctr a few weeks ago but they were covered in bees! Lol... wish i could have bought some then, they are really beautiful. Thanks!
Had no idea how pretty the echinacea are! I actually leaned more towards disliking them ? 🤷🏻♀️ not anymore!! I have found my love for them today especially the green one. Cannot wait to add some to my garden!
Reading many of the comments & cannot add any more to the wows & thank yous for showing & teaching; & you can pronounce so many that are tongue-twisters to me! I am starting a new garden this coming spring.... can echinacea be started from seeds or do I look for these already started at garden center? Thanks for help!😊🌻
Does anyone recall what the small trees are called that you can see behind Laura at 8:29 when she shows the yellow my darlings? It looks like three small trees… love these beautiful colors!!
When you say 'Established' what do you mean?? I have seeds, and our area does get drought. I'd love to grow some but would I need to wait until I plant them out?? Thanks heaps.
It’s an auger. There are several considerations to take into account: the type of soil you have, the type of drill you have (or buy) the size of the holes you want to make.
We did, but ended up not in the end. I have a hard time imaging land contour that doesn’t naturally occur. I’m sure if I brought someone else in to design it, it would be spectacular, but it’s definitely a block for me. 😬
I have planted a few of these varieties and the spread was much larger then the tag had said. So beautiful and a perfect no maintenance plant. I should look for more 🤔 😆❣
Whenever I hear that something is deer resistant, I want to try it. It is rare day when deer are not in my yard in the morning. I keep my hosta close to the house back planted with herbs but this year the deer found them. In one night, they were all eaten. I replaced most of the hosta with brunnera which I also learned about from your channel. Thank you!
The green twisters get about 4 feet tall, just in case your tag didn’t say that. I saw you planted some towards the front. I’ve had that variety for 3 years now and mine aren’t in as much sun as yours and they easily get 4 feet tall
Laura I see your energy hasn’t diminished with summer, mine certainly has! A small garden as I have in the Mediterranean where I live has gone through a heat wave and it has done a lot of damage. Discouraging in spite of the hard work. I have saved seeds from perennials and that’s what I will stick to mostly next year. Some dahlias did beautifully but the heat wave simply burn them, it was so sad! I follow you and enjoy your videos, thank you👍😍🙏
I just planted some grass seed yesterday. We're getting several days of rain so wanted to take advantage of the free water. I hope it fills in as quickly as theirs.
QUESTIONS 1. can you consider planting things that require less treatments ( example: bud worm killer on petunias) 2. can you plant more native trees 3 would you consider using less inputs and drip tubing to create a more sustainable landscape?
@@wordsalad01 Excellent comment. Also, many things require drip irrigation for the first year to get established, then the drip can be removed and the plants no longer need supplemental water. She is creating a garden to her preferences and those of her family. We're fortunate to be invited along for the ride. ~ Lisa
1. Absolutely! Aaron and I have been talking about shifting a bit away from things that require so much weekly maintenance. 2. Our list of native trees in high desert is fairly small, but we’ve been making an effort to not plant things that need any kind of insect/fungal treatment. 3. Drip irrigation is the most efficient way to water and we use whatever type of drip is appropriate for each area- sometimes drip tubing with emitter holes built in for heavily planted areas and single emitters for larger things. Overhead water/sprinklers are only used for grass. We improve our system every year! Thank you for the comment! All good things to think about! 👍
I love having echinacea in my garden! I have heavy clay soil and very intense deer pressure. Apart from the (to be expected) “test nibbles” when fawns are starting to explore, they mostly leave them alone. Mine are looking a bit scraggly by this time of year, but they look great for most of the summer.
This is only loosely related to today's video: what do you do with all of your garden debris and clippings? I have never seen a big debris pile in your space...just curious!
I was surprised that you grouped them separately. I thought you would plant them mixed. To me they would have complimented each other as a variety grouping. 🤷🏻 personal preference I guess.
With the grass pathways and borders it’s going to be a beautiful walk thru a park like setting. A walk thru a a beautiful interesting and wild garden. I can’t wait to see the pathways and borders done.
Just amazing Laura as always! I planted two sombrero coneflowers called “balsamanita” along with “prairie sun” rudbeckia, “Mesa bicolor” blanket flower this past June, and I just added “lil red Elf” coreopsis about 10 days ago or so. I love it!
I started the green twister from seed last year (had one bloom last year) and this year it is huge and beautiful. Gets taller than 30 inches for sure. Its probably the most asked about perennial in my garden. You are going to love it!
@@gardenanswer omg!! You saw my response yay!!! Can you please check out some of my UA-cam videos. I do a lot of Fun DIY projects I think you would like☺️
I so love these. I planted a hole bunch in my garden this year but there colors seem to fade. Was wondering if that was do to stress age or if they needed fertilize.
I don't think they like extra care like fertilizer. They're more of a wild flower. At least the original variety is. I don't know about varietals. Try deadheading them to promote more blooms.
Butterflies and bees are going to love those areas! Beautiful choices……with the sedums and Buddleia Bush all you need is a water feature and you have the perfect makings of a butterfly garden. Who knew there were so many colors of Echinacea to chose from? I’m making a visit to my garden center today. Thanks so much for the inspiration! 👍
As a garden center owner I couldn’t agree more. If you want to have continuous color in your perennial beds one needs to see all the beautiful plants throughout the year. There have been some incredible breeding of echinacea the last 15 years.
Echinacea are my favorite, love the varieties you have. I have been adding more and more into my garden, love watching the birds come for the seeds too, especially in the winter.
Good morning Laura and Everyone 👩🌾👍 Greetings from Windermere, Florida zone 9b 🇺🇸 What a beautiful idea 🌸 I think I need to add Echinacia to my Garden 💕🌼💕
I love the new colors of the echinacea. Do they have a longer life span then the older varieties? I stopped planting them years ago because they seemed too expensive to buy just to have die out in about 3 years.

I've heard that these fun varieties can reverted the old fashioned kind after a few seasons. Is that true??
I did too. I'm hesitant to try too many newer ones.
I've given up planting out my potted chrysanthemums fot that reason. All the colors come back yellow.
LOVELY
My echinaceas are 6 ft tall and 2-3 ft wide. But they stop blooming at the end of summer.
Avery good hard working for a future
Does anyone recall what the small trees are called that you can see behind Laura at 8:29 when she shows the yellow my darlings? It looks like three small trees… love these beautiful colors!!
Tiger Eye Sumac
When you say 'Established' what do you mean?? I have seeds, and our area does get drought. I'd love to grow some but would I need to wait until I plant them out?? Thanks heaps.
Also, what is your nail polish!! Love that colours!
Would these all have similar medicinal properties as the original?
I love echinacea but my rabbits do too
Is this also called coneflower? Love these colors so much! I just added a couple of the varieties to my “plant list” for next season!
Yes it is.
What is that digging tool on your drill. I’m sure you have a video about it somewhere. I’m a 66 year old Gardner and this would be so helpful for me.
It’s an auger. There are several considerations to take into account: the type of soil you have, the type of drill you have (or buy) the size of the holes you want to make.
Nice
What are those golden trio shrubs in the background at 8:41???
I just planted the Cantaloupe ones too! Do these get cut back in Fall or Spring?
What city do you live in Oregon? Thinking about retiring there.
How would these plants work in containers?
Be careful to not overwater or plant in rich soil. I’m not sure…but you can try some! They like conditions similar to lavender.
Earwigs and furry animals eat all of mine. 😭😭😭😭 I want these so badly
I never EVER have luck with echinacea. They die and I don't know why.
I love the cantaloupe where did you get these flowers this time of year?
Most garden centers put out fresh loads of perennials this time of year.
Our Lowe’s gets beautiful echinacea plants this time of year.
@@nhunter6506 thank you 🌸
@@GardenKath I’m heading to the garden centers! 🤞thank you
Have you considered a berm out there? 🌱
We did, but ended up not in the end. I have a hard time imaging land contour that doesn’t naturally occur. I’m sure if I brought someone else in to design it, it would be spectacular, but it’s definitely a block for me. 😬

Good morning everyone!! Good morning Laura and family!! Happy Friday! Have a great day
The transformation of the new property in one season is amazing !!!
They aren’t prickly enough to deter bunnies! They took out all of my coneflowers this year. Good thing bunnies are so cute. 😒
Me, too.
I have planted a few of these varieties and the spread was much larger then the tag had said. So beautiful and a perfect no maintenance plant. I should look for more 🤔 😆❣
I love echinacea but the bunnies around my property apparently do too... :(
And the seed spreads more plants to other areas. I have echinacea about 50 feet from where I planted the first plant. A happy accident.
@@Edu_Kate oh! I did not realize that, I will be happy if that happens 😀
I agree..mine too!
I thought they were planted at the front too, but she said they are at the back of the planting and the shorter ones are at the front.
Hi how are you doing
Can’t go wrong with Echinacea. These are some beautiful specimens! Those pathways are going to be so beautiful once they fill in.
I’m on my third year trying. I drown them with love so I’m reducing my water this year and I’ve been more successful. Started them from seed.
Hello dear how are you doing today my name are Jeff williams how about you what your name??
Laura I see your energy hasn’t diminished with summer, mine certainly has! A small garden as I have in the Mediterranean where I live has gone through a heat wave and it has done a lot of damage. Discouraging in spite of the hard work.
I have saved seeds from perennials and that’s what I will stick to mostly next year. Some dahlias did beautifully but the heat wave simply burn them, it was so sad!
I follow you and enjoy your videos, thank you👍😍🙏
Love seeing the grass pathways coming up!! You have gotten sooooo much done 🙌🏼🙌🏼💕
I just planted some grass seed yesterday. We're getting several days of rain so wanted to take advantage of the free water. I hope it fills in as quickly as theirs.
@@Edu_Kate i will keep my fingers crossed! I just have a thing for new seeded grass areas and watching it go from a furty green to full green 👍🏼👍🏼
QUESTIONS
1. can you consider planting things that require less treatments ( example: bud worm killer on petunias)
2. can you plant more native trees
3 would you consider using less inputs and drip tubing to create a more sustainable landscape?
@@wordsalad01 Excellent comment. Also, many things require drip irrigation for the first year to get established, then the drip can be removed and the plants no longer need supplemental water. She is creating a garden to her preferences and those of her family. We're fortunate to be invited along for the ride. ~ Lisa
This is her yard. She plants what she likes.
Good morning!🌻🐝
With the grass pathways and borders it’s going to be a beautiful walk thru a park like setting. A walk thru a a beautiful interesting and wild garden. I can’t wait to see the pathways and borders done.
Just amazing Laura as always! I planted two sombrero coneflowers called “balsamanita” along with “prairie sun” rudbeckia, “Mesa bicolor” blanket flower this past June, and I just added “lil red Elf” coreopsis about 10 days ago or so. I love it!
Love your enthusiasm with your plantings on your property. I have learned so much from you!
I started the green twister from seed last year (had one bloom last year) and this year it is huge and beautiful. Gets taller than 30 inches for sure. Its probably the most asked about perennial in my garden. You are going to love it!
How are the watermelon and pumpkins 🎃 doing ?
They’re doing great! We’ll give you a tour soon!
@@gardenanswer omg!! You saw my response yay!!! Can you please check out some of my UA-cam videos. I do a lot of Fun DIY projects I think you would like☺️
Coneflowers do great here. (I'm just 40 minutes from Laura.) I have about 11 different varieties. They will be beautiful.
I volunteer at a butterfly house and 🦋 don't like many of the new varieties.
@@truthfinder6932 How interesting. Anyone know why? Also, that sounds like an fun job. What does a volunteer at a butterfly house do? ~ Lisa

As a garden center owner I couldn’t agree more. If you want to have continuous color in your perennial beds one needs to see all the beautiful plants throughout the year.
There have been some incredible breeding of echinacea the last 15 years.
Which are your favorite varieties that last multiple years? I know some trials indicate some are definitely better than others.
@@rdarrett3635 all the Sombrero series and Pow Wow are great
Echinacea are my favorite, love the varieties you have. I have been adding more and more into my garden, love watching the birds come for the seeds too, especially in the winter.
Good morning Laura and Everyone 👩🌾👍 Greetings from Windermere, Florida zone 9b 🇺🇸
What a beautiful idea 🌸 I think I need to add Echinacia to my Garden 💕🌼💕
I love the new colors of the echinacea. Do they have a longer life span then the older varieties? I stopped planting them years ago because they seemed too expensive to buy just to have die out in about 3 years.
