  • The final piece in our comparison of 2+2 sports cars. The Infiniti G37S is by far the most expensive of this group, so is it worth the extra cost? And in the final discussion, the guys debate which car they'd take home for themselves. See more reviews at EverydayDriver.com

    I drive an '08 G37S that I bought about 9 months ago, and none of my friends believe me when I tell them it's a 10-11 year old car. The design of the car and all of the features it comes with is astounding for a car that's a decade old. I got it for a fantastic price (though still not cheap) from the original owner with only 31,000 miles on it. Best money I've ever spent on a car without question. My dad drives a 2015 Cadillac CTS coupe and my mother has a 2016 MX-5; I wouldn't expect the Miata to be all that 'luxury', but even compared to my dad's Cadillac (which I think is one of the 'competitors' to the G37s), the CTS doesn't even come close to being as nice or as fun to drive and the interior feels cheap in comparison to my 11 year old Infiniti. :)

    Omg did Todd just rate the RX-8 above the G37? First time I've disagreed with him so vehemently! The G37 takes luxury, refinement and driving enthusiasm to a level that the Hyundai and Mazda could only dream of. Trust me when you aren't absolutely beating on these cars, you're gonna want a car that looks great and is comfortable.

    I totally agree with you guys on the exhaust note. For some reason infiniti has mastered the exhaust noise on all their cars. The Z's on the otherhand.... no. I'm sure people can get aftermarket exhaust to solve that problem, but that can cost upwards past $1000. I'm sure you guys heard the exhaust on the FX45. Honestly, it sounds better than alot of other sports cars.

    I traded in my '12 Genesis Coupe 2.0T 6spd for my '11 G37 Coupe 7AT last year. The Genesis Coupe is a one trick pony. The G37 is much more refined. The Gen broke more necks and received much more compliments from the public. The G37 just demands more respect from everyone. Genesis Coupe= attracts Boy Racer crowd and cops / G37 Coupe repels the wrong attention

    I owned this car after my G35 and I have to say, I preferred my G35 in every way other than interior. The new body type was not appealing and despite upping the horse power by nearly 40, I felt its power from 0 was lacking by comparison with all the new torque reserved for speeds in excess of 100km/h. The one thing no other car in the price range can match is the Infiniti's sound, it's nigh orgasmic for the price.
    This is a sports car, through and through. Although I preferred my G35, I have no clue how you can take a Mazda or the Genesis over the G37.

    We hope you watched the entire review and noticed that the RX8 did very well here. And as stated, this was a comparison of 2+2 platforms, not a company and its history or racing success. Hyundai specifically used the G37 as their size and styling target when making the Genesis Coupe, and then offered it for far less than the competition - which has been their strategy for a while. Thus, we and other outlets (Edmunds was the first, and then many others) put these two against each other. You are welcome to disagree with this pairing, but it does have merit. Meanwhile, we hope you'll watch more of our work and we welcome your on-going commentary both good and bad. Thanks!

    True, we aren't a large show, but we get cars from manufacturers (both the Infiniti and Hyundai were press cars here) and we've been around awhile doing work that's gotten recognition alongside some of the biggest names in car journalist. When the Genesis first came out, there were a few reviews (besides ours) putting it with the Infiniti because the G had so clearly been the model for the Genesis Coupe. Edmunds was one of the first to compare them, though they are far different in price.

    @wavesdvdcom - Well, Todd owned a 1990 300zx, and is a big fan of the Z cars in general. But he still finds the Genesis to be a real competitor here. It's not refined, but it is fun to drive. Great resale value is often an indicator of market demand more than actual quality - Keep in mind Hyundai has one of the best warranties in the industry so a used Genesis is a pretty safe gamble. Of course, since the guys disagree, we encourage others to do the same.
    Thanks for watching and commenting!!

    Very true, but as a car enthusiast myself, I would have preferred to see a G37s compared to a 335i. The contrast between engineering strategies and goals, NA engine vs twin turbo, and "cheap" luxury vs luxury in my opinion would have been a great review. The infiniti emphasizes it's advances in technology and the BMW is about elegant simplicity and precision. Lastly, as a wild card for a third comparison, the 2011+ mustangs, or even the 370z would be more worthy challengers thanks for the reply

    There are plenty of other sources that will happily bury the audience in stats. In fact, most are obsessed with stats, so we purposely take a different approach. We find that stats rarely share much about the way a car actually feels - but they are great for charts, lists, and arguments. We realize our style might not work for everyone, but if our discussion of the driving experience makes you want to go drive the cars for yourself, then we feel we've succeeded. Thanks for watching.

  • @EverydayDriver
    @EverydayDriver  11 років тому

    We would love to completely spec out every press car we receive to make the comparisons as equal as possible. However, this isn't possible for us and most journalists - we have to use what is available in the Press Fleets. At the time we did this review, this automatic GC Grand Touring was the car Hyundai had available for the press. In spite of this, we hope you noticed that the GC did very well in this comparison. Thanks for watching!

    Now wait a sec, Paul. When you review the G37 sedan (which I own,) you said the clock "needs to be rethought," but now you like it. I'm glad to see you're coming around! :) I think the clock is a nice touch, even though it looks a bit bland. The best interior of any car I've ever owned was my '08 Cadillac CTS. If only it could have stayed running long enough for me to enjoy it for more than a month at a time!

  • @EverydayDriver
    @EverydayDriver  13 років тому

    @Vitaminous - We put these cars together because they are 2+2 sports cars, as stated in the opening. There are other 2+2 designs, but most of them straddle other categories (335i coupe & A5 are luxury sports sedans, Mustang Camaro etc are Muscle cars). And... Hyundai used the G37 as a target in making the Genesis, then undercut the price.
    We aren't the first people to put the Genesis opposite the G37. The question is always - "Is the Infiniti worth the price difference?". That's up to you.

  • @Thebigblackwasp

    How can you choose the Genesis over G37? Genesis is quick and that's it, feels cheap and looks like an imitation G37. And still the G is quicker, not even on the same level. Come on Todd.

    • @MaestroDraven
      @MaestroDraven 10 років тому +5

      I've got a 3.8 Genesis Coupe and a G37X S Coupe in my driveway right now. Both have their pros and cons. Calling the Genesis cheap and an imitation G37 is a blanket statement that doesn't hold up when you've actually owned both, like I do. The Genesis is FAR roomier in the cockpit, has more trunk space, making it a slightly better all-day commuter. The G37 has a faster engine and the luxury components, while not necessary, are really friggin' nice. I love my Navi + backup Camera, but the car doesn't feel quite as raw and sporty as the Genesis. Both handle about the same, and I turn corners sharply and fast precisely the same way. I'd recommend either one. For $15,000 less, the Genesis is a straight-up competitor to the G37, and the new Genesis Coupes will SLAUGHTER G37s with ease at a red light. Make no mistake about that. I know they discontinued the G37 for the Q, but there hasn't been a significant upping of horsepower. It's essentially the same car with a different badge number.
      I love them both. I'm getting rid of my GenCoupe in 4 months, and the G37 will take over as my primary, but right now, they're both excellent cars that appeal to two distinctly different audiences. That doesn't make the Genesis an inferior car. Not by a long shot.

    • @TWHISPERER
      @TWHISPERER 9 років тому

      MaestroDraven Thanks for the description. I like both cars too and wouldn't mind being in your situation. People forget the new Genesis coupe has 348 hp and the G only has 330 and it's heavier too. I couldn't decide which one i'd like more myself. The G is slightly better looking but the Genesis is faster...

    • @MaestroDraven
      @MaestroDraven 9 років тому +1

      John Vu Well I've since changed my stance a little on that. While the new Genesis Coupes have the horsepower advantage, they still have a while to go before they really nail the performance. Remember that the 3.8 original Genesis had 20 less horsepower, but weighed a ton less, and still got beaten. Sure, the new ones can hold their own, but not by much. One of the biggest reasons are the transmissions. Infiniti simply has the superior one. Shifts are lightning fast, whereas the Genesis has always suffered from a 1-2 second lag in between shifts, which is pretty inexcusable. Infiniti will be changing their lineup next year, and I'm willing to bet they're going to be hitting back against their competitors very hard.
      Also, if you suddenly decide to do anything in terms of twin-turbo or supercharging on the G37, it's game over for the competition. Those cars were made for that kind of thing, and they're practically unbeatable on the road once tuned. The Genesis likes to think it can take the same approach, but it's not going to achieve what the G can.

    • @TWHISPERER
      @TWHISPERER 9 років тому

      Dude, you're full of good information. I've read the 0-60 time on the Genesis though and it's as fast as the Nissan 370Z Nismo, in fact, the article even stated as such so with 348 horses, it's got to be faster then the G??? Although, you would know more then I would, I just read one article. I just want to see the Genesis move up and get appreciated in the sports world. I'm a Nissan/Infiniti man myself but I am still rooting for the Genesis coupe. It's that slow to shift huh? That's disheartening.....put a TT in a Z or a S2000 and no one can mess with you..until you come across a GTR anyways...so what's going to happen to the new G37?

    • @MaestroDraven
      @MaestroDraven 9 років тому

      John Vu Well the G37 is still going to be the Q, last I heard, but they're bringing back the old-style G37 steering. They changed it for the Q and it didn't go over very well. Feels too artificial. There's hinting that it's the first step in beefing up the Q and continuing in the same vein as what they did with the G37. Nothing concrete on that yet, though, but Infiniti is promising some big surprises.

I could easily mistake this car for an Altima coupe on the fly, and if you pulled away the Infiniti badges. I'm failing to see the sportiness of this car. Or is that the point of the "higher society" versions of already good cars, to throw finer leather and cleaner instrumentation in and assume it's better than the peon version? Acura did just that with the RSX / Integra. I'm almost glad they never got their paws on an S2000 and found a way to ruin it.

      It can look similar to an altima coupe from certain angles, yeah I can see that. they are both on the same chassis... but if you put them side by side it's easy to tell the difference, even without the badges.
      And behind the wheel the g37 outshines the altima in every way except for gas mileage. a 4 cylinder fwd w/ 175 horsepower doesn't compare to a rwd 3.7l v6, front mid engine, with 330 horsepower (300+ to the wheels.). Not to mention all the other features in which g37 outshines the altima... suspension, exhaust, brakes.
      It's a pretty valid assumption, in my humblest of opinions, that the infiniti g37 is an all around better car than the nissan altima. But that's just me...

    You guys did a good job on the overall review. I have a 2010 g37s coupe and I have very few if any complaints about it. It looks great, its comfortable, and its very fun to drive. I think you guys missed on the comparison piece. I would've liked to see you compare it to the 335i, A5, and CTS coupe. The Genesis is similar from a driving perspective but not from a price perspective. Keep up the good work.

    I own one and although I am only 6' my dad is 6' 4" and had about 1 inch of head room and as far as leg space, the seat and steering is adjustable. One possible issue is if you are used to maybe a Lexus or other wide bodied car where you have a lot of room between the door, seat, and center console. This car doesn't have too much of that. To be sure, see if you can rent one for a day or go to a dealership and ask to test drive one to be sure. It is a great car so I do recommend it, good luck.

      Other than swapping out most of the exhaust system in mine, it's still mostly stock, and I've definitely managed to get my 37s slightly under 5.0 if I can manage to time the shifting exactly perfectly, have new tires, and get a decent launch on a clean driving surface. Even bone stock, I'd be willing to bet money that its 0-60 was definitely faster than 5.6, despite how heavy it is for the size.

    Have you? Lived with a Genesis? Your opinion is probably based on driving one or having seen one. Yet you feel comfortable and justified in making such statements.
    No, I have not lived with the G37. But I've driven it.
    Unless I am willing to sell the house to purchase a Maybach, I prefer not to debate which middle class "luxury" cars are deserving of ownership.
    I like the Genesis for what it is. It's a driver's car. It's not pretentious either, which I like.

    Hyundai Genesis does not sound better than the infiniti G37
    And not to mention Genesis is not reliable it was 3.5 out of 5.0, which ranks it 16th out of 31 in its class infiniti g37 is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 8th out of 31 which makes the G37 better in it's glass over the Genesis. Only thing I do not like about the G37 is that outdated navigation and touch screen system

    I really want to see these guys compare the 2013 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 Coupe, the 2013 Infiniti G37s, and the 2013 Mazda RX-8. Hyundai stepped up their game big time for the 2013 model. Literally everything - from performance, interior materials quality, and exterior styling - is improved. I'm not saying the new Genesis is BETTER than the G37, but it's VERY easy to make the argument now.

    G37 is a car "skyline" of a tradition of Japan, and is GT car of the genuine article which existed as a base of GTR in the past.
    RX8 is a sports car with the low center of gravity so that it may be known seeing the height of a bonnet.
    A rotary engine and the Subaru boxer engine have the very low center of gravity.
    This is an important element of a sports car.
    Although the exterior of the Hyundai coupe seems to be a sports car, the contents do not have technical innovation.

    @c0nv1ct1337as an infiniti owner, i have to say the "luxury" part of the brand is all an illusion. At least at the G/Ex/Fx level. the interior looks nice but start rattling before it turns 2 and the leather will crack after about 2 mths of daily use.
    Than once that happens and you start to examine your interior piece more closely than your initial test drive. You will realize that infiniti uses fake vinyl in place of real leather whenever possible. Don't get me start on the creaking and rattling

    Nicely done video! Nice video quality! But you guys need to step up your audio. The voice quality inside the car is kind of OK, but not that great.. But the final wrap-up outside the cars where you both converse? Poor. You're using an on-camera mic is not good technique. Step up to wireless lav mics for that and this will sound WAAAAY better. With all the work you put in to this, don't throw accept audio quality that makes your voices sound thin and distant. Otherwise, nice job!

    Todd - your argument is nuts... buy a Z if you want performance.. buy a G if you want performance with luxury, lower insurance and wife with oh god kids in the back... Both the Hyundai and Mazda loose their value ASAP and their lower quality and re-sale value prove it. You should add the real competition to the G which is the BMW for those that love conservative (boring) design.and or Z vs Boxer (over priced and lower performance). I had a twin turbo Z in 1990 and waited till 2006 for the G.

    the mustang's power and handling has vastly improved, as well as look, its not like before where many debated that its a sports car, but now you have to respect it. I believe its over used, but its great esp the new 5.0, but in corners it slacks, on straightways, thats what its meant for, the new 5.0's still need handling improvement... for i can name several vehicles that i enjoy on twists than the stang.

    I totally disagree with your take on the chrome spoiler. It is more like a girl wearing
    a pair of Pleaser heels. It just adds a tad bit of pizzaz to a very refined car. Also
    the seats in my 2014 Q60S are amazing. In fact the reason I bought this car was because I wanted a 350Z with a back seat. This car feels just like the Z and the seats are
    soothing to my back. And I have had a back operation and have spinal issues. In fact,
    when my back hurts, I can take a 30 minute ride in the Infiniti or my Z and my back feels great.
    As for the engine, the 3.7L likes far more revs then the older 3.5L I have
    in my 350Z. That was the first thing I noticed. The Z will pull hard from 1500
    rpm where as the 3.7 does not pull till about 3000 rpm. I love both my 2014 Q60S and
    my 350Z..

    My father has a G37 with 150k miles, it runs strong but.... It just feels cheaply made. Did you guys feel the cardboard paper thin sunroof shade ? His door seals came loose over time and now you can fit you fingers between them. The materials inside scuff easily as well(put coins in the doors? don't do it) and it has a lopey idle and feels rough. It is loud for what it is. We have had to replace the clutch 7 times(ridiculous) and can't average more then 24 mpg highway.

But all the manual cars are G37S's and the sport seats are NOT friendly to larger framed dudes. The Hyundai is impressive and a LONG way from being the Scoop from the 80's/90's. I would test drive one.
