Found your site through Buckin’s site. Been a diesel mechanic all my life. Worked at Cummins for many years rebuilding industrial engines. I now work for Pepsi to keep their fleet of trucks and trailers running. I had never worked on trailers until I started working for them. I have enjoyed learning on working on them. I was always an engine guy. Have cut my own firewood for many years as well. I self taught myself on doing muffler jobs on my own saws, now I want to start porting. Glad I found your site and looking forward to learning this next level of challenge at 62 I have found that you have to keep challenging your self and learning to help you keep your mind sharp and to feel a sense of being. Tinman, Started watching at maybe 850 subs. Selfishly, I subbed 999 for a family member and 1000 for me. With tips from you and some other channels, I started porting cheapo saws, developing a steady hand to not ruin any cylinders. At about the time of this video, my son stuck a steel ring on his finger, which started to swell. Virtual schooling wasn’t keeping his attention. It was very scary and we didn’t want to go to the ER during COVID quarantine. With a 1” diamond wheel on the Dremel, I went to work on something far more valuable than an OEM cylinder until wire cutters finished the job. Thanks for contributing to this unforeseen benefit of amateur porting.

CCs May make a difference. I ported a 42cc poulan 98/125/76 and a 36cc poulan to 100/125/76 and the 36cc doesn’t have the torque the 42cc does. I think the smaller piston diameter in the 36cc made less compression.

When you say "gasket delete", I fully understand what's going on but what do you then use to seal the joint if you remove the gasket? RTV, or maybe a hand cut thinner paper gasket??? Absolutely LOVING the channel! Thanks Tinman!

My company deals in fuels reduction so we are into a lot of small stuff all day. If there is more brush than trees I run a 543XP due to how light it is. If there are a lot of pecker poles at 4-8" I run my 550. We've had 3 of those. My buddy blew one up in 2 months running it stock with 50:1 Husky mix. After 2 weeks of running mine I hated the saw. I decided that if I opened up the muffler a little and went to 40:1 H1-R mix it would run way better. It's 4 years old now and I can't begin to tell you how many gallons of gas has gone through it. Open it up and it looks beautiful inside. It went from my least favorite saw to my second most favorite saw after my 1985 era 181 SE.

Thanks for your channel ! I'm interested in buying a new saw, but I want to go ahead and have modifications done before I use so it's running at peak performance. My question is: Does porting a saw, or maybe even changing the stock muffler, or changing the transfer, do these type modifications diminish the life span of a chain saw in any way. I mean, yeah, I want top performance but I don't have to do it. I'm not a pro logger. I just cut trees on my farm and I'd like for the new saw I purchase to last the rest of my life. Thanks.
If youre handy enough to port you should be able to build yourself a timing wheel. If thats out of your scope youre probably not ready for porting. (I know some old hands dont need them but that only comes with experience. )
Hey tin man, I’ve got a 044 10 mm. I’ve never ported before. I’m thinking about just polishing the exhaust port and cleaning up a little in the transfers leaving them rough. Do you think this will help increase power or should I change the timing? I do have a timing wheel.

Thanks for sharing your information,wish I would've had a better understanding about port timing and how to use a degree wheel before I ported my banshee a few years ago thanks to you I get it now and the fact I skrewed up two cylinders it has a very narrow powerband now 10000 is its only happy place now extremely peakey not cool for the type of trail riding I do now cause I'm getting old lol
Awesome content tinman , when you start porting a saw can you go slow enough where guys like me can comprehend what you are trying to achieve. I’m referring to the technical side of things ie torque vs speed. I know this will help a lot of us especially if you zoom in and show exactly what you are doing. You are a great teacher, and I’m looking forward to your next port. Thank you again for such great content......
Thats what my cutaway will be for. In general terms more rpm=less torque More torque=less rpm. More rpm generally makes the torque curve smaller. The key is to find the balance between torque and rpm. Thats the journey. Every saw will want something different so the way to find out what a saw wants is to experiment.

It is running again but I cannot seem to make it 4 stroke on the high end. Think I might have an air leak somewhere. The throttle shafts are real loose in the carb so I ordered another to try. Can't seem to stall it with brake cleaner on the clutch or flywheel side.

My trusty husqy 395xp is getting pretty tired. Some minor scoring in the cylinder. Ran straight gas very briefly a couple years ago. Just picked up a new cylinder, but thinking about trying my hand at porting the old one. Waste of time or can the scoring be filled in with JBweld? I run a 36" bar on it. I also occasionally run a 3120xp, with a 48" or 6' cannon bar. Thinking about tucking in to that too, it definitely struggles pulling 12' of chain through 8' diameter logs. Love to here your thoughts, no worries if you're to busy. Plenty for me to learn just watching your show!
Out of the box the new saws run like they have an air leak. They run hotter which in turn helps them pass EPA standards. Which means there not going to last as well.
Got a ? 4 u I really messed up buy an ms271 I ported it. I didn't really get the gains I thought i would. So thought about a big bore kit might solve that but as you probably already know they don't have any. So my ? Is the ms271 and 291 are on the same chassis could you use the 291 cylinder on the 271

Hello from Brazil my friend Can you try to help me, please? My chainsaw has a problem with excessive compression. But when I remove the spark plug the piston rotates normally. Even placing your finger in thze spark plug opening causes the piston to become extremely compressed again. Yesterday I installed a completely new cylinder and piston, but the problem remains. I changed the spark plug, removed the carburetor and exhaust fan, and still the problem remains. Do you have any idea what it could be? Can I send you a video showing the problem? I have been seeking help with this mystery on various social media channels, Instagram, UA-cam, but no one has been able to guess what could be causing the problem.
as i consider attempting on a cheap crappy saw, just for practice before I touch one of my good ones, I understand timing, makes sense..... without a timing wheel, may I ask, what about sideways porting? Not necessarily up or down on In or OUT, but horizontal porting and polishing.... air flow and mass should still improve, but would not effect the timing in a vertical lateral manner.... What do you think??? Or just go get a damn timing wheel? LOL

do you think I can do a muffler reaming on a 555xp autotune, with positive results? I am not concerned with noise violations, lol. Just thinking it would breathe better. Would it squeak out a bit more power?
In my experince all the 5 series huskies that I've dealt with really like a muffler mod. They run cooler with an opened up muffler so they tend to just be better runners after.
The old Homlites, maybe 130 or xl 76. I ran those in my younger days. They were hard in the hands with the vibes. 550xp is my favorite saw now. It is serving me very well.

Thats what my cutaway will be for.

2 things I'd check.
Make sure theres no leak at the carb to intake block gasket. Second make sure the metering lever is high enough in the carb.

Try adapting a Walbro WB3A.. I plan on doing it with my mac 1-41.. the carb is normally used with a yamaha KT100.

The old Homlites, maybe 130 or xl 76. I ran those in my younger days. They were hard in the hands with the vibes. 550xp is my favorite saw now. It is serving me very well.

10C is 18F. 0C is 32F, 20C is 68F, more thann 20C is too hot. Less than 0C is cold. Well, less than -10C is cold. :)

Auto tunes usually from my understanding have no issues fueling when ported. I think you'll be fine.

I definitely got a good question not great about emails so hopefully you read this and we can figure something out I got a Stihl oo9 top handled saw thing fires right up has reeds in it starts on first or second pull every time has no power when I go to cut I don't understand
