- Coal powered steam train on steep mountain grade gives 2 Shave And A Haircuts! Steam trains in Cass, West Virginia. Awesome at grade railroad crossing with crossbuck protection on public road! This is Cass Scenic Railroad. They have Shay steam engines, passenger trains that you can ride, steep grades with 2 switchbacks, cabooses, model trains and all kinds of historic railroad items. This is the best steam train operation in the eastern United States beating East Broad Top Railroad by just a little bit, at least in my opinion. Cass has several different routes that you can ride and they have company houses that you can lease by the night. On this trip we stayed in a company house for 2 nights and we stayed another night in a motel right across from the train station. We have stayed in several different Cass company houses and they are all in excellent condition. The town of Cass and the railroad are owned by the state of West Virginia. Cass Railroad had an interchange with Chesapeake And Ohio Railroad in Cass although the original Cass Railroad was a logging railroad without ballast and had light pound sectional rail. The C&O abandoned their route here in the 1980s. We rode the Cass train to the top of the mountain to the overlook and we also rode the Durbin Rocket steam train in nearby Durbin, West Virginia. The slide show at the end of this video shows pictures of the Cass trains that I took. I have been here a couple of times when they had trains races between steam and diesel. Here is a great video of a train race! • Steam Train Race, Trai... Listen in on 160.455. Filmed July 15, 2020. Thanks for watching! There's nothing like the sound of the old steam whistle.
And they are all perfectly tuned at CASS.
Beautiful whistle. Sounds great in those hills!
I love watching these trains. it makes me feel that life is so peaceful and simple and easy. thanks for your videos, you made my day
Shays (authentic) were made in Lima, OH. Other manufacturers could build them, but had to call them a Shay type as Lima had a copyright on the name.
Interesting
After Lima produced their last shay, the Willamette logging company out west bought the rights & produced a very shay looking locomotive with several improvements on the original shay
Great whistle artist. All that clanking machinery caught in a time warp and one can almost smell the coal smoke. Great opportunity for the whole family to have a memorable experience in history as well as relax in an unhurriedly world. Chessie says "Head to Cass for a good time"
No, no, NO! Cass Scenic/Mower Lumber Co/Greenbrier Cheat & Elk was never narrow gauge. It was always standard gauge, the entire line.
Yeah, I got some bad info
Great video and sound of the steam whistle!
I road this excursion when I was a kid and was able to jump.on ole Shae Locomotive #5 🚂 . I'll never forget the trip to the top of the Mtn with my family, this is one train trip all family's should take and its like a 2 or 3 hr trip up and back and one of the best times to go is when the full fall leaves have changed. Thanks Jaw Tooth for the memories.
Every family should do this at least once. It's a positive memory they will always have.
I like the Shay locomotives, designed to haul heavy coal loads in mountains.
Designed in Michigan to haul logs.
@@terryboyer1342 logs of the Yosemite valley railroad for example.
Gotta love the Yield sign at the crossbucks - yep you will yield :) That looks like a great ride! All wheel drive - how about that! That engineer loves to work the whistle! Very cool! Interesting relic cars - wow :)
Jaw Tooth, I'm going to find a sleeveless Hawaiian shirt for you. You're out of uniform in this video. lol
It was almost too hot! I had a paper thin silk one but it tore from my seatbelt
The conductor and crew don't mind to be filmed 😊👍
Great video & slide-dog-show !!!
That train whistle is wonderfully haunting. Love how it echoes through the valleys. That engineer really knows how to work that whistle!
Also love the steam whistle echoing across the valley. Love the video, watching steam trains could be an all day event. As a kid, we would visit grandparents in Miami. Florida East Coast railroad would bring out an old steam locomotive. We would go down to the depot, and watch it come through. The cousins and I would start at one end of the platform to the other end jumping over the steam cloud. The only stipulations, stay on the waiting passenger side of the yellow painted line. A ride on a scenic steam railroad is always worth it. The only other thing that can compare is taking in old vintage warbirds at an airshow.
It wouldn't be a sign in West Virginia without at least one bullet hole
Nice Video!👍Like 1988
Greetings from Switzerland
Thanks for visiting!
Очень интересный паровоз! Да ещё в рабочем состоянии!
Привет Цинциннати из Харькова!
Hello Cincinnati from Kharkov!
Hello Kharkov! Thanks for visiting!
Jaw Tooth with the STEAM power! Love to see it!
JT is the best for covering all kiiiiinds of railroading live action!
I got luck passing by there on the way home 2 years ago they had 3 steamers up and running. Love WV.
Always ask to ride in the cab before the trip. You get lucky every so often.
Jawtooth:Ah but wait there's more there always is
I love going to Cass! I only live about 50 miles from there
3:50 reminds me of the opening of Petticoat Junction! Great video as always!
You're right!
I love to see Steam locomotives. They are Doing an inspection on Norfolk and Western 611 today before its departure to Strasburg possibly Monday. I enjoyed the video!
There’s something enchanting about watching steam engines run so many moving parts machined to the last detail working in sync just beautiful…
All those moving parts on one side of the train, facinating ( locomotive )😎👌👍
I love the sounds of steam engines at work! I used to run on ITM NKP #587-Noblesville IN and WVRR Baldwin Prairie #100-Connersville IN way back when. The main take away from steam railroading is that everything is Hard, Hot & Heavy! Great snapshots and video. Thanks for the memories!
They are in the process of completing the connection between the Western Maryland RR out of Elkins WV to Cass. That’ll be a good one to shoot when the complete the connection.
A good run for the Heisler to run on or the Climax but a real waste if they use WM #6 for it. I have ridden that line behind #6 and id hardly broke a sweat on the run.
Never seen a piston configuration like that.... Looks amazing and complex. 🇬🇧🇯🇲
How are you doing tonight jaw tooth train man good. I always love all of your videos and stories on UA-cam on trains everyday. Jaw tooth
Glad you like them!
so awesome
Thanks David!
That is one of my favorite engines. I really love this video. I am going to save this in my favorites list of train videos. Your running to get more of this train is awesome. Just love your videos.
Thank you very much! Tomorrow I have more video of Cass steam
Good Sunday Morning Jawtooth!!!
Hope you have a fantastic week!!
Good morning!
Amazing videos jaw tooth keep up the good work
Thanks! Will do!
Reminds me of “Petticoat Junction “ around 3:50. That whistle is beautiful
Shays are amazing locomotives!! Really awesome video... yours set the standard for UA-cam train videos...😁
Hey Bryan !! Great video & Pics !!! Thanks !!! Did you ride to ""WHITTAKER STATION & BALD KNOB "" ???? Been there many years ago & had a great day up there !! Hope you ALL had fun & enjoyed the past !!!! ""KEEP IT SAFE "" Did you do the ""DUBIN & GREENBRIER "" runs ??
I absolutely Love that whistle!! Thank you for filming this Jaw Tooth, it's Perfect!!
Thats an impressive cut-a-way of the pistons moving, that water tower looked it was ready for a lick of paint, certainly unusual having the tender facing forward. You said the gauge was 4'8'',, I think NZ gauge is 4'8" 1/2, unless you go to Aucklands museum "Museum of Transport & Technology" (MOTAT) for short. That whistle in the hills takes me back to a time & place long forgotten.
Thanks for your families commitment, love your sons call sign for you, I didn't miss what was said, I used RT's for years in road transport. Keep up the Safe Railfanning.😎👌👍
Again, I repeat, Cass was NEVER narrow gauge.
I know now. The fellow who gave me the info for this video was wrong about that. I think everything else is accurate but I corrected that. He also told me that the steam trains use water as lubrication instead of grease but I want to check that out further before I put that in the description.
@@JawTooth No, they definitely use grease as lubricants. :)
@@jeromekay2106 Good, I'm glad I didn't put that in the video also. I can't remember the details that he said about it but it had something to do with just the steam engines. I don't know but I'm glad I didn't put that in there.
A lot of logging railroads were narrow guage and a lot of Shays were built for narrow guage, but narrow or standard they all use petroleum products for lubricant. Your informant may have been telling tall tales, JT.
The haunting sound of a steam whistle is a sound I hope we will always be blessed to hear. There is just something magical about that
ummm Jaw tooth i dont ever think cass was narrow-gauge Itwas built standerd gauge. My older brother Brad used work there running Shay #5 Read this info NEVER NERROW GAUGE en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cass_Scenic_Railroad_State_Park
Locomotive Shay Beautiful West Virginia I love it. I have one around three trucks it’s a beauty.
いやぁ、アメリカにシェイが残っているとは思わなかった。i'm,veryhappy!
Cool Steam Power! And a wooden RR XX Crossing sign! Haven't seen one of those in years!
I'm going back again in four weeks
Hi wwot
@@JawTooth Wow awesome
@@slasherhawk24 Hey
Cool video! Great steam action Jawtooth! Thanks for sharing!
I love logging locomotives. I have a shay, heisler, and climax on my model railroad. The sound of that whistle is haunting. Steam is my favorite. Great video especially the sound. Thanks!
Absolutely awesome! Love that steam whistle! Thanks for taking us along.
Nope, never narrow gauge here. Someone gave you bad information. Good video, though.
Thanks for the info! My source will be hearing from me. lol
@@JawTooth good to know! I know you try to be accurate!
Nice set-up those folks have there son! That whistle is hauntingly beautiful. Really made me go back to my Grampa's living room listening to those record albums of his, boy do I miss him. Late in the evening if I can't sleep I'll sometimes hear the freight line in the distance...it's like his way of saying, "I love you and miss you my dear Grandson..." Great job brother.
I went the Cass website. They claim 5 to 10 % grades. That is impressive. I have a nerdy thought for you technical foamers: I believe the Shays can take these grades because all the loco weight is on the drivers, and all the drivers are connected. So adhesion is maximized and wheel slip is minimized. I believe nothing can beat a Shay on steep grades for adhesion RR's. I love this video JT ! Thank you.
History of West Virginia Pulp & Paper's rails (predecessor to Cass Scenic RR) was instituted as a standard gauge railroad unlike many logging railroads in the hills/mountains.
Wow! I'm loving that steam loco sound!! Its so quaint a d charming!! Great scenery, and the water tower reminds of a show called petticoat junction that featured a steam train and the water tower. What is a Cass house? Great video! Ten thumbs up jaw tooth thanks!
#2 reminds me of Graham County railroads 1925.
fantastic capture Sir..
that railway tracks was just amazing 👍❤️
stay safe and healthy 💞
It's no wonder they need a full tank of water!
Most of the steam is going out thru the whistle!
Very, very cool. Thanks a lot, man.
Keep well and keep on.
Thank you too! They also refill the steamer with water near the top of the mountain
This is a great video showing the operation of a Shay locomotive with the side driven wheels on the locomotive as well as the tender. Lima Locomotive Works in Lima OH was the principal builder.
Tom B
You have to love the old steamers, no matter what the design. Looks like a great time for all, I'll have to check it out for myself. Thanks for the video, son! Keep 'em coming!
Great video and slide show. Steam locomotive whistles have an evocative and other-worldly quality that is both haunting and nostalgic.
In my neck of the woods. I live in the neighboring county. Webster.
2 thumbs up!!Great video, love the whistle of the steam trains🏁🏁
Just an additional comment to your reply to Charles S. The fire was at the Silver Grove roundhouse. I believe there were several locomotives that were lost besides the Chessie Steam Special. No monies were forthcoming from any company or group to restore.
So Kool. But why is the locomotive backwards?
Thanks for that one my wife loves the steam engines especially.
That is a very loud steam whistle! Probably one of the loudest I've ever heard. It sounds great.
I don’t remember all those box cars etc back 30 years ago when I visited.
Video sempre belli a affascinanti. Mi piacciono molto sia i treni che i luoghi. Very nice and interesting video. Hello from Italy
Ohh what a surprise!! Steam, and a Shy! Thank you very much Mr. Jaw Tooth! Great report!
I have been on that train 4 times. I Did a youtube video on that train. I Put my gopro on the tender great view. Thanks for the video.
I love those Shays. They come from where I was born, Lima, Ohio.
Awesome awesome video!!! I was just telling my son about this locomotive and how it was built to go up and down steep grades. Wow 🤩
Nothing like that smell of burning coal. Good content Jaw Tooth!
We always get a wealth of knowledge when we watch your videos. I love the steam videos great job JT.
Nice old box cars and a very awesome yellow caboose. I love that old steam whistle and the old water tower Jaw Tooth. Man, that is a really old mill along some really old train tracks. Another awesome video Jaw Tooth!
Great Capture JawTooth
The 1923 rails are dated 9 of 1923. September 1923.
I give anything to go back up there havent been to cass in 10 years think shay number 11 belonged to fort eutis army base
Great video Jawtooth as always lovely railway hopefully I'll get to see it one day. Lovely locomotive
Never seen that type of locomotive with that type of drive system. That was really cool
I've been covered by those cinders many times before, over the years.
Almost Heaven...definitely Wild and Wonderful!!
Haunting but beautiful at the same time that steam whistle, living American History
That orange-red 3 bay hopper with the freight cars, what roadname was that? Great video.
Full rich high pitched train whistle. Love it and all the train sounds.
I was last there five years ago and HAVE to get back!
A shave and a hair cut is a happy response from a engineer - thats kool, love your vids!
Ah! Hot weather in the USA. We seem to get all of our weather via the Jet Stream from the USA. I am hoping that some of that hot weather is also going to make its way across the pond to us.
There's nothing like the sound of a train ,this train makes you want to run after it yelling "wait for me"!!
That Wet Sweat humidity weather ain't no joke.Whew.
Can you really talk to wide world of trains tell him I’m missing my hearts for him please please tell him I want a heart from him tell Him Kd tv don’t get a heart anymore tell him I want it
Awesome train and enjoying your video too sweet watching now 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎❤️ video too
Thank you very much!
We rode the Yosemite Sugar Pine RR many years ago, which is also a Shay.
That was really cool!!! Gotta love those steam engines!!
Whip rrrr will, whip rrrr will, whip rrrr will , boop boop da boop. Last whistles?
Have you ever been to Strausburg, Pa. To the Red Caboose Inn?
Hi Jaw Tooth, it should be noted that Cass was never narrow gauge. And, somewhat unusual for a logging railroad, West Virginia Pulp and Paper had it chartered as a common carrier. Number 5 has spent its entire career working out of Cass, built in 1905 and still operating today. Great video and sound work. Always look forward to your offerings.
I got some bad info on the gauge. I wish I could correct it in the video
Not only that, the GC&E track in part became owned by the Western Maryland. And the lumber company owned the largest Shay in the world. WM #6 is a 3 truck while Cass rebuilt a large one as a 4 truck Shay. GC&E also owned former WM # 11, a 150 ton 4 truck Shay that later went back to WM and was numbered #5. While the track was not ballasted until the most recent rebuild, that Shay had no problems operating on the then current track while #6 had problems on the hill. So at the time, was used on the Cass to Durbin run until the track was washed out.
That running water sounds lovely
I’m headed there this weekend hope you enjoyed yourself there I haven’t been there in 9 years
That tower looks like from the show Peticoat Junction
The scenery is great, but I would not go there alone, as bears and bobcats do prowl woodlands and a lone hiker would arouse their attention for an easy meal
another well done my man great footage you did always great too watch your videos
🚂 Hi Jawtooth, Looks like you stepped back in time to the 1920s. Great video and super sound. Enjoy your stay there. Thanks Jawtooth 🚂🚂🚂
Thanks 👍
