I worked construction in my summers and I know skilled carpenters, even the ones that never went to trades school, can easily make $45/hr in Calgary if they subcontract or even $40 on payroll and its not even boom times. A lot of guys I worked with were easily clearing $100 000 a year but the problem is they choose to buy brand new pickup trucks on instalments or have overall poor saving habits. Hours are really long too. What I noticed about wages in Vancouver and Toronto are that they are really bad for construction workers, I know a guy in Vancouver whose a layout journeyman making only $21 a hour, a labourer in Calgary starts out at usually $19-20.

Thats true about construction in Canada and especially in Alberta, Im Canadian born citizen without college or university education and I worked for other companies to gain experience for several years, I consider myself highly skilled at this trade and started my own Sign company 9 years ago and I now make 100-150k a year by my self with no employees, its hard work sometimes and you have to put in really long days when you have the jobs and relax when you aren't busy, One of the best parts of having a business that wasn't mentioned in your video is the TAX write off! truck, insurance, gas and just about anything i purchase "for the business" is tax exempt

Often immigrants come here with family and we don’t have much money saved so can’t afford to go back to school so construction is a good way to go, I came almost 4 yrs ago and i started with a steel and stud company starting with 20/hr now from the last two yrs working as a Plant Operator with INLAND CONCRETE making 34/hr with union... Calgary is the place to be if you’re willing to do what it takes and improve your resume as much as you can..

  • @micrasystems

I agree with what you said about construction. Like you though it's also not for me and I prefer the office with a real washroom and kitchen. I'm in the construction industry but in the project management side. $40 / hour is common and I spend most of my time in meetings and at my computer and some site visits. I would say there is a big demand in the engineering and architectural side too of construction for those interested in the industry without physically working everyday on site. I do recommend obtaining an engineering license (P.Eng.) or PMP. I'm a P.Eng. and it helps open doors in this industry.

Plumbers and electricians come under trades category. Only Canadians or PR holders are allowed to do these courses.
