David Starkey: I'm Guilty of Heresy Against the Religion of Woke

- Clip from David Starkey's first interview (see here: • EXCLUSIVE - Dr. David ... ) since being cancelled for a comment he made in a 2020 UA-cam interview (dealing with slavery & genocide).
In this era of woke, when once venerable institutions can no longer be relied upon, Dr. Starkey found himself removed, dropped, ejected or forced to resign from one notable body after another -- from Fitzwilliam College & the University of Cambridge to the British Library & the Royal Historical Society -- with little recourse for appeal.
He believes that the institutional elites who choose to react in such harsh ways are creating a stifling, authoritarian culture that is immensely destructive, both to academia and wider society.
He draws a comparison between the experience of those who've been "cancelled" by woke extremists with the treatment traditionally meted out to heretics by religious fundamentalists.

I think he is mistaken about the primacy of 'objective fact'. That is important. But it is far more about where sentiments lie. If you reduce those millions to just 6, would the present view of Germany suddenly do a volte face - no it would not. You'd still be hearing about those 6. This idea you can sway any more than a tiny fraction of people to one side or the other by getting into a measuring contest with numbers of lives expended is simply wrong. Conversely, for so long as enough of us are determined to indulge in self-denial, it matters not how much good and how little ill was wrought in our past. Any amount of ointment will be ignored to find a fly howsoever small.
David Starkey is someone the nation should be celebrating NOT ridiculing. A great example of the upside down world we now inhabit.

He even uses insulting language about the people he agrees with lol reminds me of old mr partridge in hi de hi who was often very insulting and said what he thought but as Dr starkey said you can't control the world or what other people say about you (unless you are elton john in which case you sue) but you can control how you react. Offence is taken not given.

Universities are more interested in dragging down society and banning history to learn from an actual academic.

What David Starkey actually said in the Darren Grimes 'interview' was clearly meant ironically, as if he were speaking from the perspective of manipulative snowflakes regretting in exasperation that they were unable to convincingly present historic slavery as genocide because 'too many' had survived. In particular, the phrasing "damn blacks" was clearly said sardonically, in the same way that a teacher might refer to "the damn children".
Grimes' subsequent grovelling apology to woke tyranny helped to crucify Starkey. The self-serving Grimes also surreptitiously edited - ie. altered/falsified - the original video post on his channel afterwards such that no new viewer would be able to judge what had actually occurred and the original context would be lost.
Context is meaningless according to the leftard mob.

Yes, I watched the original and the 'offensive' comment was very minor, basically unnoticeable. You would need it pointed out to you before you could take offense.

David, I so wish I had some one like you when young in teaching me and even more so, getting me to practise and think as you do ie histoic - my life would have been so much better. "You can't control the world, you can't control what people say about you, but you CAN CONTROL how you react to the world and the people you in interact with".... now 68 and even though succesful in some ways I have much regret in years wasted in anger, emotion and energy which ultimately did me great harm and I so wish I had not done. Wise words indeed David, to any young man reading this , change now and take David Starkey's advice.

There are some circumstances where an appeal to the humanity of those around you, is a better hope than simply giving up on life.

I have not given the BBC a penny for over two years, it's a joy.
You can not be responsible today for anything that happened yesterday; particularly if you were never involved in the wrongdoing! Our house was open for guided tours. I'm delighted Starkey didn't let the neo-Marxists cancel him. Naturally, he will use the Forum to discuss history. But I hope he will apply the lessons of history to the current political madness on a routine basis. The value of history lies in helping us interpret the present, and weighing the current neo-Marxist nonsense in the scale of history is perhaps the best way to refute its claims to legitimacy. Heresy against the religion of "woke" is exactly what is needed today.

That injustice - of rash judgement, vigorous condemnation, and almost-total excommunication - seems to be the fate allotted to reasonable heretics, for an irrational brand of heresy always catches up with them .. rather brutally. It makes one feel rather nostalgic for good old-fashioned heresy - at least it was more or less thought about instead of merely being incessantly fought over. ;o)

A great interviewer needs to say very little.
A couple of decades back I discovered the creator of the need to claim victim hood. It was a legacy from an era which turned a reasonable human emotion back against a caring democratic society to ultimately destroy it. Well... I would appreciate Dr. Starkey a bit more. If he hadn't thrown Darrin Grimes under the bus in this interview by calling him an inexperienced interviewer. I.E. it was his fault this situation escalated to the point in which it did. And causing Mr. Grimes so much grief {in trouble with the police} because of his poor choice of words. And a thumbs down to you Peter Whittle, for not calling Starkey out on this point too.
Darren grimes said a similar thing himself ie used the defence of being inexperienced in order to absolve himself of any blame. Heavy stench of Winston Smith about darren grimes in the speed with which he distanced himself from "his hero"
Turn people away from reality, get them to believe things people wouldn't normally believe, get them to believe the lies and you will be able to control them more easily.

The 'woke' mindset is that of the 'true believer'. They are zealous in their beliefs to the degree that as Dr Starkey says, it has become a sort of religion. Many woke people believe that their.... ahem... 'compassion' aligns them with goodness and virtue. For them it's a noble position and they feel strongly convicted to reform non believers who are sadly ignorant of THE truth. They believe that they are 100% correct. Unfortunately, non woke protestations only serve to deepen their conviction of our ignorance. What is needed is for them to question their own beliefs, to gain insight into their own hypocrisy, thus breaking down the psychological bondage they are unwittingly tied to. This self inquiry is very unlikely to happen, unfortunately.
