    I wanted to put a tommy lift gate on my truck but didn’t want it just attached to the bed like the one a local shop installed on my dads truck years ago. I watched this and started researching frame mount kits from tommy lift gate and finally found one that fits so my lift will be installed by me and a lot stronger then the rest around here. Dad and I even built under bed to frame braces to connect the bed mounts to the frame.

    I got one used and it doesn’t close all the way. It slows down about 6” from the closing position. I can push it the last 6” to close position. My Brother and I Just Installed it yesterday ( Not Professionally but it’s on there and it does work) Could that be a Cable wire problem or ???? I still have to grease it and everything

      Sounds like low on Hydraulic fluid. With lift down check the fluid level in pump. Ideally it should be about 1" form top. I use #32 Hyd. Jack oil to top it off. Most likely the cylinder seals are worn out. Tommy Gate has nice kit to replace them. It is not a difficult repair.

      @@JunkNGrind You will probably see the oil dripping ou of the pulley end of the cylinder. Tommy gate seal kits are the best way to fix it. Less expensive then replacing the whole cylinder

    I have this same lift gate when I try to put it down i have to pull it away for the truck like 4 inch (all while hold the down switch) then it starts to go down what can be the problem. I greased and everything. It goes up fine. But won't go down without assistance?

      The kick out springs on the lift most likely should be replaced. Its Tommy part # 3818 (or drawing # 46 in the parts diagram) It is not an expensive part and it is an easy fix. Also check your arm pins. Make sure they are well lubed. The other thing to check is the steel cables. If they are frayed that would slow the down cycle of the lift. Good luck

    Thank you for the video. My Tommy Gate control is bad. Would you know how to jump it to go down?

    • @michaelmacdonald7702
      @michaelmacdonald7702  Рік тому

      1. check the connection at the battery to make sure the main breaker has not tripped.
      2. There are 3 phill. screws that hold the control in place. Remove them and you will see the back of the control has 4 screws.
      3. there are 4 wires from the lift. Red is 12vdc, jump red to brown and the lift should go down as long as you have power to the lift.
      The other way to do it is to remove the control and put direct power to the down valve on the top of the pump.

    Hi I need to replace my cables. Is this something that can be done fairly easily DIY? I am quite handy. I imagine those pins will need come out. Any advise? Thanks in advance.

    • @michaelmacdonald7702
      @michaelmacdonald7702  Рік тому

      Use a Tommy Kit, its expensive but it is the correct size. For a pick up its 7/32" . Threading the cable is critical. If the cables are crossed or ran the wrong way they can cut thru the pulleys. The kit includes all of the parts and instructions

      @@michaelmacdonald7702 Thanks! Just replaced it. Do I need to put any lube the cables or pulleys?

    • @michaelmacdonald7702
      @michaelmacdonald7702  Рік тому +1

      @@hoppy760 A little oil on the cables and pulleys won't hurt them. Do not grease them. The only thing that needs to be grease is the arm pins and you will find a zerk on the top of the arm on the lift side and on the bottom of the arm on the lift side

    I have a Tommy lift on my f 250 and it stopped working, the orange power light comes on but the only way I can get the red activate lift light is touch the green lift wire to the hot side on solenoid and put it back and it works until i turn the switch off , any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

    • @michaelmacdonald7702
      @michaelmacdonald7702  10 місяців тому +1

      If you are able to make it work by touching the green to red wires on the solenoid then the solenoid is working. If you have a new control and the lift and you are still having problems, then maybe recheck your wires or maybe the ground.

    Is it possible with 3 people to lift the gate stuck in the down position with no power?

    • @michaelmacdonald7702
      @michaelmacdonald7702  2 роки тому

      Yes you can if it is a pick up model. Why dos it not have power? Is it a motor issue or is the control bad? If it is the control, there is a way to jump it out.

    any advise to get tail lamps off from a 2005 silverado with a original Tommy? I thought there'd be a access hole(s) in the side plates but no. & You ever switch out platform from a single to a platform with flipper?

    • @michaelmacdonald7702

      If the lift was properly installed, there will be little alum. tabs that hold the light in. I do see lifts come in where the installer skip putting those in. If you do have to take the lift of to repair the lift, try to get the tabs so you will not have to do it again. the Tommy part # 5255 for your year Chevy

    No hydraulic reservoir on original series to check add fluid

    • @michaelmacdonald7702
      @michaelmacdonald7702  7 місяців тому

      There is. On the top of the pump is the breather plug. Open it and look inside. Rule of thumb is the oil should be about an inch from the top when the platform is down. When you have low oil, you will hear the sound of the motor change when the lift is near the top and struggle to go up the last few inches.
