The story of Haystack Rock began nearly fifteen millions years ago when volcanic lava flows from eastern Oregon flowed along the route of the Columbia River then descended into the soft ocean floor, pooled in spots and pushed to the surface. Over the years, Haystack Rock has been lifted and chiseled by the sea.
